The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Straight ahead
The Claw At Usf is always a challenge whether you’re a big hitter or a short hitter the most important thing is to be a straight hitter… The course layout gives you chances to take it vantage and also has trees that like to take it vantage of you if you were not straight off of the tee . The greens challenge you to place your ball below the hole. Downhill but may lead to run off’s for these greens are small and have big runoffs most of them are elevated you will love the claw and it will either love you or hurt you ha ha Ha enjoy
Not what it used to be
When I first played this course two years ago, it was the hidden gem of Florida. The course I played this time is not even in the first 100 courses. The fairways were terrible, and many greens were in need of work. The traps had not been touch in a long time. A very dissapointing day on a course I looked forward to playing.
winter course conditions
the greens were in poor share. there was no grass in fairways. just burned out
Course in rough shape
For this time of year, this course is in rough shape. The greens are beaten up and the fairways are brown and very spotty.
Interesting course
Narrow fairways were not overseeded but the greens were elevated and held really well. Putted very good too. Even a couple of gatirs.
Year after Year .... terrible!
I have been making a trip out to play this course about once a year for nearly 20 years and it has never been maintained. You would think USF would have a great golf team being in central FL. Maybe this course is part of the problem? The layout is extremely difficult especially when you don't know if your ball will plug in the swampy areas or bounce out of bounds off the sloped hard pan. Raised postage stamp greens and weeds. Terrible.
A crying shame
For several years, this course was maintained and a joy to play. What happened? You have to search to find green, manicured fairways. The tee boxes are a joke with mostly bare spots. The greens have weeds and sand. There is sand everywhere and areas that haven't seen a sprinkler in weeks. The cart barn is falling apart, no starter, and the bar and grill is closed till further notice. A good guess is that it is about to become a site for an apartment complex. Horrible golf conditions.
Great layout/Poor condition
Played here many times. Great layout but poor condition. Greens had just been sanded and had weeds growing in many places. Fairways had many bare areas. The bunkers were in good condition with white powdery sand.
Terrible and dirty conditions
Playing year after year this course during our vacation coming from Germany. I'm sure it was the last time this year. The fairways, greens and tees are in very bad condition. The clubhouse and the restrooms are too dirty to visit them.
Help the fairways
From the last time I played here roughly over a year ago the course is not in as good of shape as it used to be. Fairways are turning slightly brown need some work. Greens are getting weeds in them and fungus in a few of them.more bare spots then a year ago. I am not sure of who is doing the maintenance but they really need to step it up before they lose the fairways and greens. Couldn't even get any lunch the grill was closed down. I really hope they get this course back in shape it's a great course when they do the maintenance.
A good place to play
This is a good course to get in a round of golf. The greens are hit and miss, some are in really good shape, while others are not as good.
They closed the grill so we couldn't get anything after the round.
Greens are horrible
Played on an overcast Saturday afternoon, 2pm tee time. It had rained the day before but the course was dry. The tee boxes weren't so bad, the fairways were average, (I've played worse) what killed the experience were the greens. They were recently punched and if you had a 3 ft putt, your 3 ft put was not going to go in. Ball bounced everywhere on the green and no putts ever stayed straight. Bunker sand was amazingly fluffy and easy to get out of, with my PM GRIND "I am Phil!" The greens were the only real negative, staff was really friendly. I would say give this course until July before you play it, the greens are just in too bad of shape.
Poor conditions
The course was under bad condition. The fairways were bad, the tee boxes were over grown, and the greens were being aerated but it wasn't mentioned on golf now prior to booking.
Downgrading of Course Conditions
This was the 2nd chance to play the Claw in the past 2 years. The course conditions have gotten a lot worse (aerated greens aside). To top it off we booked thru GolfNow and it didn't mention that the greens were just aerated in the past few days which would have made a difference in where we chose to play this holiday weekend. We only learned about the greens from the starter and he mentioned to just take 2 putts and move on. While the layout is very good, the conditions of the entire course was poor. I will say the sand traps were the best I have seen in a long time however ironically the part of the course that was the best, was the part you try and avoid.
I hope the conditions get better.
Dissappointed
Play here ten years ago and enjoyed it. Yesterday was a big disappointment. Nothing short of a cow pasture. Can't believe USF is associated with this course.
No worth the savings
First and last time. Driving range not convenient. Starter not helpful. Several people left after first hole due to 4 teams backed up and still it took 5.5 hours to play. They pack to many people on the course and can because it is cheap. It's not worth the savings I promise. I will not play there again. To bad as it is the U of SF course.
My understanding is that the USF Men's and Women's Golf Teams do not play at the Claw. They play at Lake Jovita.
