The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Beautiful, Natural Environment
Conditions are not sup[er premium, but the course is very special with all of the wild life and mature trees. So nice to be out there in nature and playing golf. Would definitely go again. Some very interesting holes. High quality sand. Starter super friendly and helpful, price reasonable. Played through two foursomes, who couldn't have been nicer, then finally joined up with a twosome to finish out. Great day of golf.
Marginal at best
Positives:
- good greeting in pro shop
- can't beat the rate to play at $14
- nice sand in bunkers
- great playing partners
Downside:
- lots of sand on greens...not in great shape
- slow play
- a couple of strange par 5's in terms of design
- marginal fairway conditions
This is a hard golf course. Small elevated greens. Have to be on to have any fun IMHO
The Claw at USF
Excellent course, friendly staff, exceptional value.
Fast and narrow
Small parking lot. Small clubhouse. Fast check in. Nice clean restrooms. The carts are peppy. The drivIng range is far away. But it works. The fairways are narrow with many doglegs, and in good shape. Greens are fast, they too are in good shape. Tee boxes are a little uneven. The course is full of wildlife. Hotdogs were big and Coked well. The restaurant looked nice, I will definitely try it out next time.
Not for the faint of heart
Enjoy the front 9, Score well because if you are not accurate and straight, watch out. Bring extra patience and golf balls, you will need both. The back is narrow and to me tough. But, if you like golf like I do, go back every chance you get. Say hi to Gary the starter
Saturday afternoon
Staff assisted when I called to say I was running late. Additional golf carts are highly recommended and a beverage cart would have been useful. It took 3.5 hours to play the front nine. We were not able to finish the 18 before dark.
BadGreens
The layout was good but conditions poor. The greens had bare spots and sand. Worst greens I encountered in Tampa and Inverness. Driving range grass was terrible. I would play it again only if conditions were better and I would pay more for that.
very winday
course was not in good shape tees had little grass and fairways were really hard. Took us over 5 hours did not see any rangers to speed up play.
Nice lay out
Nice place, friendly staff, great value!!!
Pace was slowed because several very slow players who were playing multiple balls, but overall I would play it again.
Unfortunately, as expected
The staff was very friendly especially the starter. The pace of play was great. Good value for your money. Our group travels to many courses throughout Florida. The course condition was as follows. The greens were extremely bumpy and uncut. There was damaged conditions on multiple areas of most green. The fairways were sparse in many areas with little to no grass. An old tired course lacking conditioning by USF. You won't pay much but don't expect much.
Hurts so good.
These seeming innocuous greens are savage. I know what a stimpmeter is but for these they were set to ludicrous speed which is beyond stimp. Nothing about this course is perfect, but while it see alot of play, it is in very good condition. Fairways are narrow and it seems to be cut out of a swamp so there is water everywhere. Alligators on a couple holes. Actually lots of wildlife. When you get to the hole with enormous body of water in front of it, don't fire an iron off to the right. Get the Big Dog out and Swing for the glory of making it over. Otherwise why play? Love to hate this course.
Good bang for your buck
I liked the course. Fast and true greens. Fairways could use a bit more grass, but you have to understand we're going thru a ssrious drought. Will definitely play here again!
USF Claw
This is an interesting course with tight fairways, water, sand traps fortifying elevated greens. The course is not in good shape at all and, in my opinion, not worth the $30 seasonal pricing.
Average conditions Great layout.
Greens sparse and cut too low --super fast. Easy to three putt.Challenging layout with elevated greens .
Good bargain compared to other courses. Very difficult for 13---15 handicapper.
