The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Good course but greens are a bit rough
Greens has little to no grass or very short grass and they seemed rought.
GREAT LAYOUT - TEES FOR ALL LEVELS
The Claw demands you think about placement from tee to green. A good selection of tee boxes for any ability. If you play from the tips be prepared to carry your drive a minimum of 245 yards with accuracy on several holes. It rewards good thinking and also offers requisite penalties if you go for it and miss. Greens roll true and can be deceptive if you are not used to reading this grass. It is a great walk. Just take plenty of water and nourishment. Wildlife is evident and plentiful. Practice tee is a bit of a distance from clubhouse so take a cart. I love this course and play it often.
Watch Out For Ball Thieves
I understand that Tampa has been in a drought, but the fairways and greens were a little worn. The staff was extremely friendly so we definitely didn't have a problem there. I guess the only problem was that our golf balls kept getting stolen. We even witnessed someone picking up our ball and then denying it. I'm not sure if it's because this is primarily a college course or what but it was way too frequent. I'm not sure if we'd play there again or not when there are plenty of courses nearby.
Always a great challenge
I love this course from the way out to the greens it is always a challenge if you can play this course pretty well then you'll play other courses great .
Great course
Pace of play was great. Conditions good. Course make you stay on top of your game and really use course management. Many holes really make you think of the club you are using.
poor condition of fairways
Arrived for our 12:49 PM tee times and no carts available. Had to wait not too long. The fairways were very muddy and cushiony. Lots of cart ruts. It seems as though this course does not drain that well. Nobody in front of us all day until back nine and three kids were in front of us riding in one cart. They didn't seem to be in any rush to move faster. Somebody put them in front of us as we were making the turn.
Tight track
This course is deceivingly tight. It's long enough to force you to take some risk off the tee, but it's also tight enough to make you wish you didn't. The greens were in great condition. The rough is very difficult to play from so it pays to be accurate.
Poor Conditions
Played on 8/14/2016. Have not played here for the past 5 years. Will not return in the next 5 years.
Course was very wet ( even though there has been little rain ) and was cart path only. Tee boxes very beat up and the greens although fast were in poor condition with many bare spots. Fairways appear not to have been cut for some time.
Cart had issue making an incredibly loud grinding sound. Called the pro shop ( on hole 3 ) to have a replacement cart brought out. Was told there were no extra carts available and to stop after 9 holes. There were still none. Another cart was abandoned on the 14th tee due to issues.
Was charged $37.00 to play this course in the middle of a Florida summer. Never again. Too many other options out there. STAY AWAY !
Fun course and good value
This is always a fun course. Fairways were spotty and could use some work, but the greens were in great shape and rolling fast. Bunkers were in great shape.
Surprisingly nice for the money
A friend recommended The Claw and I wasn't disappointed. This Tampa area gem is located at the University of South Florida campus.. There were certainly enough tee choices to make the course as long or short as your skill level desired. This was the first place I saw the new Segway carts. The fairways and greens were well kept. I played around New Years so the traps could have been in a little better shape. The clubhouse was pretty basic but the staff was friendly and helpful. With a HOT Deal from Golf now this was a spectacular bargain. I would play it again in a heartbeat. GOOD COURSE.
Nice Course, No Staff Control
The course it self was in pretty good shape and fairly challenging. However, the tee times were too close to each other leading to long wait times. We were hit on multiple times by the group behind us.
a good test
Course was in very good condition. Greens were plugged 2 weeks ago and have filled in nicely. Greens a bit slower than normal, but rolled true.
Difficult Course Made Worse by Poor Conditions
The Claw continues to be challenging offering the narrowest fairways in the area. Greens were sanded and in horrible shape. Small greens that are elevated increase the difficulty. Fix the greens!
Great course!
The course seems open and simple but has some challenges and you can get in trouble. I enjoyed it and want to take it on again.
A Favored Vacation Course
Excellent layout, can be challenging from the back tees but playable for high handicappers from the more forward tees. Staff is friendly and eager to help. Dining experience after the round was very good.
This course is a "hidden gem". Since it is part of the Univ. of South Florida, I believe it should be better maintained, which should lead to more play.
Slow Play
Took 4 hours to play just 13 holes! Way over booked!
Excellant dollar value here
nice layout, course was in great shape. Some fairways are tight. The smallish greens were in very good conditions and ran pretty quick down-grain. The greens will hold a well struck approach shot. Lots of gators and birds of prey about. A very enjoyable day was had by us on this course.
The course is challenging & in good shape.
Greens are awesome. Course is fun, long, difficult and very scenic. Lots of trees, water, and wild animals. Great time playing golf here.
Pleasant surprise
I'd played several years ago and was not expecting what I found. The course was in good shape, green and lush. A 4 hour round, little waiting. The greens were smooth and very fast but held well on approach shots. And the alligators left us alone but posed for pictures.
