The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Much improved
We had not played it for a couple of years and it is in much better shape now.The greens a re smooth and fast and hold well. The play was painfully slow with many novices out ahead but we will be back.
The Claw Review
This course is in good condition. All the greens are elevated, and pretty small, making them challenging to hit. I like this course. I wish it wasn't so far from where I live. Over an hour drive.
Value
Nice value for your money.
Great challenge and shot making
If you play from the tips, it's a great challenge of length, accuracy and shot making. The average player needs to play from the shorter tees to get some advantages in the course but even this is no guarantee. There is plenty of sand and water to keep you honest but more of a premium is accuracy. If you spray you are in trouble. We played in Feb. And the course needed some but overall in better shape than others we played in the area. We will definitely play here again when we visit. Really liked the course.
Needs work
Tee time was 2:04 got cart at 2:10 teed off at 2:30. Had to wait 10 minutes for each shot. Course is very wet even though no rain for 5 days. Saw cart girl one time at #2. I play here once a month want be back for a while
Pace of play
Course was how I remembered. However they severely over booked course and pace of play suffered greatly 6 hour round. They really need to fix booking issues
The Claw is Fantastic
The Claw is a fantastic course with excellent and friendly staff. If you have never rented golf boards then this is a must! Picture a surfboard on wheels with your bag mounted on the front! Look into it as I highly recommend.
The staff is very friendly and came by 5 or 6 times during our round to make sure pace was good and all was on point.
The course played well, the greens were true, fast, and accurate. The Claw is a challenging course but very playable. We were lucky enough to see an alligator during our round which was very cool! You can tell this course is very well maintained and looked after.
Once finished with 18 holes, we checked out the food area which was nice. After downing a couple cold ones, we headed out very pleased with our experience.
Highly recommended.
Can't beat the price
First few holes played without delay. Back 9 got really slow with more water in play. Greens where a bumpy but it is still Feb. Young lady at club house was great when greeting my son & I at checkin. Overall nice no frills course that's worth checking out in Tampa.
I wasn't impressed
This course wasn't what I thought it would be for a College course. I will not play there again. Fairway greens had dry areas, and greens appeared to be rolled over.
WESTY GOLF
I always look forward to playing this golf course. The rough is mostly bare and trees come into play when you stray from the mostly wide fairways. All the greens are elevated so quite often an extra club is neccesary to reach the greens. I am mostly optimistic
before my round but even if I am playing well it seems there is always a triple bogey around the corner.
Play the proper tees
Played as a single and was paired up with a 3 other players who extremely overestimated their abilities and played about 2 further back than they should have. Made for a long day. Please play the proper tees for your ability. Course is very tight on several holes with some corner cuts over water. Course conditions were OK but nothing outstanding, very playable.
Pace of Play
The course was full of very slow golfers. Our round was over 5 hours. We waited on every shot on every hole. No ranger to help. All agreed...never again.
Great value
You can't beat the price in East Hillsborough. The greens are in excellent shape and real receptive for this time of year. Reminder to other players please repair your ball marks.
Fun and a challenge
This course play's fair to all golfers. The tight fairways on some holes and commands just placement of your shots. Alot of holes designed to intimidate most golfers but alot can be bit off on corners on a few giving you a better chance to score on the holes that set up to your play.i love this course and play at once a week.
one of my favorites in Tampa
see you soon and telling more friends about this golf course. need to add sand to the bunkers
Tight Course
Bring plenty of balls, good condition, play early, an hour and a half behind on scheduled tee times in the afternoon.
Great course, very nice greens
We liked the length of the course (some nice long holes for the women) and the greens were in great condition! Very narrow fairways on some holes and had to wait on a few holes to hit but we really enjoyed our round... And for a fantastic price!
Crazy slow
First time playing it, this course can be fun, but not if you has to wait on every tee box.
Plus the pairing is wrong, you can not put a two some in between two four some, it just creates a bad experience.
It took us 5 hours and change to finish, after 10 holes we were let through, just to get stuck behind another two some.
Whom iam sure were not locals floeida people are friendly, if you go play and get pair up with someone who would not even say hi, you can bet that person is not local.
So the rest of the round we just sat there on every tee box, until they hit one ok shot out of four.
There is also no marshall on the course you are on your own.
Hope you have had a better experience, I would not be going there for a while.
Go to the eagles either the forest and the lakes you would have a good time, or tpc tampa bay.
Slooowwww
Had not played the Claw in about 20 years but had read some decent reviews so we decided to give it a try again. The course was in relatively good shape, especially the greens. One area of concern was the bunkers. Very heavy sand that was obviously raked by machine, leaving huge furrows over the entire bunker. Add that to the fact that a large share of golfers neglected to rake up after themselves and bunker play was next to impossible. Incredibly slow play (2-1/2 hour front nine) dampened what should have been an enjoyable day on a course that was in much better overall shape than I expected.
Love USF Claw
We come to Florida 3 times per year. We always plat the claw a couple of times. Course setting iand surroundings are amazing. It's in nice shape. From the pro shop to the grounds crew and everyone in between they do a great job and are very friendly. Great value for money. They have great specials. Hats off to USF The Claw. You gotta play there
