The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Lots of Singles/Doubles
I usually play as a single because of my work schedule. I always ride and play fast.
This course seems to have a lot of people working on their game and usually is doubles and singles who sometimes wont let you play through.
I also had an older gentlemen steal my new Titleist golf ball.
I love the layout, very challenging holes with beautiful nature all around.
For the price I def recommend it.
Pro Tip - Dont buy the breakfast biscuit, get the hotdog instead.
don,t be in a hurry
course in very good shape except for the hard bunkers. a challenging layout that straight hitters should enjoy. proper placement of the tee shot will allow lower scores. narrow fairways on many holes. fast greens go to rocky's for a beverage. great staff. will play again
Avoid this course
Avoid this course there has been no maintenance to the course. Grass growing in all bunkers many bare or muddy areas in fairways. Many tees have been moved up to the front tees due to severe damage. Seems like the management has given up on the course.
Rain
The course had taken a lot of rain. Even with that I stilled enjoyed my time. This course has always been a beautiful course to me. I love the layout and the challenges are not overly difficult.
good city course
Course is playable, but will be better when it
all dries out more. Raised greens that are fairly flat.
They need a week or two for the top dressing to settle
in. Many holes require precise shots, so if you scatter
yours, be fairwarned.
Grest
Pace of play was slow, we were able to jump to 3. As there were so slower parties ahead.
Beautiful trees, woods, ponds,
Cart path only because of rain. 3 of the holes were changed to par 3's, which messes with trying to figure out your handicap some. The entire staff was great. I paid $24 via GolfNow, but when I arrived they only charged me $17 because of course conditions. They could have been a pain about it, but they didn't. I did like the natural beauty of the course. Beautiful trees, woods, ponds, etc. I almost forgot I was in the middle of a large city. The course had some challenging holes with hazards, trees, and other obstacles I had to really lay out a plan and try to place the shot. I look forward to playing this course again, especially when it dries out. My 9 year daughter loved the course as well.
One of the worst kept courses I've ever played.
This course is an absolute terrible course. This may be a good play to hit a few balls after work but that's about it. The green were just redone. The tee boxes were terrible. The fairways were in 'not so good' shape. Absolutely terrible drainage. Rough was muddy and muddy tractor tire tracks everywhere. No cart person. I have no idea how this course has a 3 1/2 rating! If I ever played here again, it would be to practice after work...
vbwkb,
I apologize that you were not treated to a fun and enjoyable golf experience during your recent round at The Claw. This past month we have been experienced record rains and flooding making it difficult to maintain the golf course to our own standard. We hope that you come back out and enjoy a round once we dry out and are running at full operation. Please email me at Cgreen@theclawatusfgolf.com and I will make sure that you next round is an enjoyable one.

Cart path only because of rain. 3 of the holes were changed to par 3's, which messes with trying to figure out your handicap some. The entire staff was great. I paid $24 via GolfNow, but when I arrived they only charged me $17 because of course conditions. They could have been hard-nosed about it, but they didn't. I did like the natural beauty of the course. Beautiful trees, woods, ponds, etc. I almost forgot I was in the middle of a large city. This has become my go to course
Great course that is quite challenging. Tight fairways with some good variation in the holes. Lots of trees and water come in to play requiring smart choices to get to the green. The only part I don't like with this course is the greens. They are wicked fast and flat. There is no slope to any of the greens or at least I never encountered any playing this course.
There is a few sections where the landscaping could be better. One green had a divide in the middle that I had to putt over. I find it a bit pricey unless you go for an evening round which is what I usually do.
I have not tried their driving range yet due to the fact that if you hit over 250 yards you are not allowed to use your driver. I usually go to a range so I can work on my driver as it is the weakest part of my game yet when I hit a good one I average around 280 yards. Wish they could fix that in someway.
Besides the few small things with the course it has quickly become my go to place to play a round of golf.
Horrible Golf Course
Don't waste your money...no matter how cheap the price gets don't play here...hit range balls instead...get a root canal...go see your mother in law...get a irs audit...anything instead of playing here...a real goat ranch...horrible greens...under water...obsolete holes you can't hit driver on...the worst.
Great course
Fun course to play at. Great value and always kept up.
poor conditions
the course has very poor drainage, spoken wet.The sand traps have no sand in them, and around the sand traps, greens and some of the rough the grass has not been cut in while. This the worst condition i have ever seen this course. The only positive was the greens.
Randy12466,
I apologize that you were not happy with the condition of the golf course during your round here. Please email me at Cgreen@theclawatusfgolf.com. We are currently addressing the course drainage issues and would love to have you back out at the club.

Exception course and experience for the price.
The long, narrow fairways are challenging. The undulating greens are well maintained and very fast. Suggest a few minutes on the practice putting green before teeing off. You will not be disappointed.
Great layout
I appreciate a great layout and it is here at the claw, no.3, 7 and 14 are a challenge. The clubhouse and carts are less than average but you have to remember this us a college course. The greens are in great shape, fairways, rough and T-box's are fair. Overall if you can play here for a reduced rate it is worth the drive. On the weekends buyer beware they do cram people in and they never have a starter so the pairings are a mess, I played in a 4 some with a 2 some in front and directly behind.
Claw is a good course to play
The staff is helpful, the range is limited to irons but is in good condition and the course is very good.
The greens are the best I have played in over a year. They putt true and are fast.
My number choice for local golf
If you want the bells and whistles to a golf course this isn't it but if you want an enjoyable round yet challenging this is the layout for you. I typically go off early in the morning so I don't deal with pace of play issues. When I 1st started playing golf I played here a lot so you know I have had my fair share of headaches (haha )What I enjoy most about this course is the requirement to play strategic golf and bring out every single club in your bag. Greens always roll true so no worries here, the only issue from time to time is the course doesn't drain great but on those days just use the rules to your benefit with standing water. My favorite around tampa!
tough course
Don't use your expensive balls on this course, unless you have great command of your clubs. Narrow fairways with tees and water to reach out and grab that ball. Overall conditions were good. Only issue was with golf cart, parking break didn't work and would have to find flat ground to park.
Very hard course
Wet, starter wasn't good had to start in back nine because of backup at hole 1
This is The GM at The Claw again. If you could send me an email with the starters name or description and any other things you would like to share. My email is pschelah@theclawatusfgolf.com
Hello Zach,
Do you know the name of the starter that you interacted with? This is The GM of The Claw at USF and I would like to fix our starter situation. We appreciate your insight so that we are able to fix the problem at The Claw. I would also like to apologize for the bad starter. Once you let me know who it was I will get the problem fixed so this situation will not happen again.
Great value
Course was in really nice condition, we breezed through the front 9, but there was a league when we got to the back 9. a little slow but not too bad. Awesome deal for the money. I will definitely be playing here again
Darryl,
I apologize that you were not satisfied in the current condition of the golf course during your round. This past summer the golf course received record rains and flooding. Due to the flooding, the course received severe turf, bunker, and drainage damage. In the coming weeks we will begin renovations to repair turf damage, bunkers, and washed out drainage lines.
I can assure you that no one on this management team has given up even the slightest. We look forward to proving you wrong in that we are the best valued golf course in the area.
Please email me directly the next time you plan on making a tee time. Cgreen@theclawatusfgolf.com
