The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Hit it straight
Great course to keep you focused. If not you'll be in trouble. Very tight, but fair. Greens were seeded and fertilized when we played, but, still rolled fast. Definitely will play this course more. The guy in the pro shop was very friendly and polite.
Get what you pay for....
Decent course public. Small, tough greens. Greens in very good shape. Lots of chipping w small greens. Fairway pretty good, tee boxes not very nice. Old FL course. Tight off the Tee. You will score better after you play it a few times and learn where to be and not to be. Would only use driver on about 4-5 holes and keep it in play/play for position the rest.
1st time at the claw
As travellers we rented clubs, the sets we received were in extremely poor condition. My set didn't have a driver, a badly dented and rusted club was my substitute. A new set of knock offs is only a couple hundred bucks.
The rain had been extremely heavy in Tampa in the weeks leading up to our weekend and yet the sprinklers were running while we were playing. The ground was like walking on a sponge in a lot of places.
Good tight layout. Different for Florida.
Course was in average shape. Pace of play was decent. We parked our cart behind group in front of us after round.Employee asked us if we were leaving the cart there. We moved it to where we thought he wanted it(since he didn't offer to tell us)! We were walking away and he yelled an expletive at us. Cranky old guy. What do you expect for $25.
All You Want
First time on "The Klaw," and for a University course was fairly impressed. Challenging golf course and greens were both fast and in great shape. Starter was friendly and informative. About my only complaint was there were several holes where water was reachable off the tee but not in sight. Sort of frustrating to stripe a tee shot down the center of the fairway and find it in the bottom of a lake. It was crowded the day we played but it moved along at a decent pace.
Fun course
The course is in really good shape right now an d the $25 super saver on golf now made it a bargain!
a good test
lots of elevated small greens - need good short game
Rough Conditions
Layout: Interesting lay out, tight fairways, elevated greens.
Course Conditions: Greens are still coming back after being aerated, fairways are in very poor conditions (lots of dead patches). Overall conditions have really gone down hill.
Really ruff condition
Very large course which was a plus but the condition of the course overall made it not the best experience for the first time there also no ball washers or cold water anywhere.
Interesting wildlife.
Fastest greens we have played this holiday. Good test of golf as all greens are raised. Good value for money and friendly staff.
Bring plenty of drinking water
Golf course was fine...however, on a hot summer day drinking water should be available on course...there was none...both water fountains at club house were not operational...plenty of cups at stations but not a drop of water?!
The par 5 "The Claw was a interesting!
The par 5 "the Claw" was interesting! Play was slow in the beginning and the cart girl was done at 4pm
Snails pace
While this course is a nice enough course, yesterday's experience was something that will make me think twice if coming back. The pace of play was the worst I have ever experienced. It began on the very first hole and continued all 18 holes. Tough day.
good quality golf course
I found the golf course to be fun and challenging, the greens were in good shape and with some of the pin positions the greens were also a challenge to putt. the course did not seem very long. Some of the fairways on the back 9 are a little tight for a driver so club selection is important at the tee box. What I liked most though it's that you really do not hear the noise of the city when you play and you get a nice relaxing game that will make you want to come back.
Great course for price; slow pace of play
Great course for the value just very slow pace of play
Solid Value
The rough around the greens and areas just off the fairways need a LOT of reseeding. Fairways and greens in excellent condition.
4/10 @ The Claw
I played this course a few times in the past. I am not a regular golfer nor am I a good golfer. My friend had not played The Claw before and liked it. We would definitely play there again. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. There wasn't a ranger or refreshment wagon on the course that day but they gave us a number to call if we needed anything.
usually good value course
have played here 1 to 3 times per winter holiday and usually great value on a challenging course. Tends to be busy due to value pricing. Latest round was exercise in futility with over booking and lax oversight of pace of play by Pro Shop resulting in 3 hour front nine...when we quit...Pro Shop did provide a 9 hole raincheck but lack of oversight was frustratung even with a phone call at about 4th hole resulted in no action..
