Kokopelli Golf Course
About
Located a short distance from Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix and Arizona State University, Kokopelli Golf Course is a championship length course that offers many interesting challenges. The rolling terrain creates sloping greens and undulating fairways. A majority of the teeboxes and greens are elevated as well. The course also has large multiple island tees and water hazards in the form of meandering lakes that come into play on several holes. The signature hole of Kokopelli Golf Course is the par-5 18th hole. The dramatic finishing hole calls for a shot off an elevated too followed by an approach shot past water to an elevated green.

Is this round over yet?! Photo submitted by u000001335906 on 01/03/2015
Best bang for your buck.
The tee boxes and greens are beautiful. The fairways need some work but the greens and tees outweigh the fairway issues. Good layout, fair price and easy to bet on and book. The food was excellent as well..
Nice course in Gilbert Arizona
If you’re in Gilbert Arizona stop by and play this course, good layout, friendly people, the perfect local public course.
Good value course
You get what you pay for, but the course was in Ok shape - lots of burn in and around the fairways - greens weren’t bad at all.
Value with questionable quality
There's no doubt that $35 is a fair/good price to play Kokopelli. It was a twilight rate; we started at 3:30 and finished 18 holes in about three hours. Excellent pace of play! The fairways are in pretty good shape. However, off the fairways there are extensive unsightly dirt patches throughout the course. These are not typical desert-landscaping areas; these are unmanaged dirt areas. There are numerous sand traps that are flat-out hard pan--literally devoid of sand; bare, hard, and miserable to play from.
Poor
This was my first time playing this course and I will not be going back any time soon. The course is barely playable in my eyes. Tee boxes were decent and some parts of the way fairway were ok. The greens were decent but the rest of the course is absolutely the worst. The rough is just rock hard dirt that I didn't even want to swing my clubs on. The bunkers are rock hard clay and no sand at all. There are little spots of water just sitting around the course and on the cart path that you have to drive around. The course is poorly marked as I didn't hardly know where to go. I started on hole 10 and actually quit after only doing 9 holes. I don't recommend going to this place as it's clear they don't care about the way their course looks. My cart was dirty and when I looked on the one side a piece of it was like falling off. Like others have said there is a ton of potential but they have a ton of work to do to get it to that point. The people there were friendly but the course itself has much to be desired. Wish I wouldn't have spent any money trying to play this course.
Course has gone down hill
Haven’t played here in a couple years and wish I hadn’t. Fairways have a TON of water/mud. Ball would land in fairway and have hard pan dirt lie, sitting on top of soggy wet ground, or just mud grass mix. Dry mud on greens from people tracking on their shoes. Lot of bare spots on or next to fairways. Very disappointed in the conditions here. Pins placed fairly tough spots considering you couldn’t get good lies to hit into greens. Overall wouldn’t recommend or play here again until there is a BIG change. Need new superintendent and a lot of time to get back into shape. Do yourself a favor and play somewhere else.
Ty's opinion
The greens and tee boxes were beautiful. Some of the fairways needed some work. It was not busy so pace of play was not an issue. Good value for the money. I will play there again. Thanks.
Wear your water proof golf boots.
I actually love this course. It is a beautiful layout with a lot to offer visually. The holes provide some challenges but it is not unfairly set up. My issue is with the water retention, especially what is now the front nine. I can't get through the round without taking my shoes off at least twice to get the mud off of them. I usually play in the morning and I guess its shortly after the irrigation has been running but the lack of grass next to and around the golf path ensures that you almost always have to walk through the mud to get to your ball or the green. Plus the Sand Traps are an automatic free drop. They are just unplayable.
Having said that, the tee's and Greens are always in great shape. I think they are some of the best greens in the valley.
Unfortunately, I think it will take major renovations to build in proper drainage and seed grass in all the places that needs it. I go to Kokopelli when I want to get in a quick round. However, when I want to have a great golf experience, I look elsewhere.
Kokopelli Train Wreck
Stay away from Kokopelli until they get their house in order. The course is a mess. Mud and standing water over the entire course. Some fairways are 60% dirt and 40% grass. This is the third time in the last 3 months I have booked this track and each time the conditions worsen.
Hiring Greenskeeper???
Played this course November 2021 and looked forward to returning this past weekend May 2022.
Unfortunately, it seems as though the entire greenskeeper team has been on vacation since I played there 6 months ago in November. Mud and standing water in the cart paths. No full grass across any fairway or tee box. Anthills and dirt patches on the greens. Also, impossible to play out of sand traps as they are either muddy or have standing water.
Sad to see an ARCIS course in this kind of condition. Charging $70 to play a course in this bad of shape without warning, they should be charged with fraud.
Why?
They have let this course deteriorate before our eyes. The staff is awesome and super friendly but the course itself is just beat. I pt one 5 yards off the fairway on 16 and it went into a puddle so big there were ducks living in it. Garbage course and oh yea it was a 5 hour round. You would have to pay me to play there again.
Bare areas and horrific sand traps!
I have not played here in many years, but this is not what I remembered. There were huge areas that are completely bare and a mojority of the sand traps were even worse. I will not play there again until these issues are addressed, nor will I recommend it to others.
Nice layout, back nine under repair
This course seems to be under repair. The bunkers currently need sand and the back nine was being punched and graded. Very muddy on the back nine. Greens were in great shape, however, and the front nine was in much better shape than the back. Nice layout.
Good layout.
I like the layout of this course, wish it’s condition would match it.
COUNTRY CLUB ATMOSPHERE!!
Awesome course design. I read all the negative reviews, and put off by other golfer experiences, over the sand traps not being maintained. However, I decided to play the course anyway, and glad I did. The entire staff was awesome, including the guys cleaning the carts at the end of our round
Whenever the course owners can afford to spruce up the sand traps, it will definitely be in the top 5 courses in all of Arizona. White Sugar looking sand please, like what you see at Pebble Beach. (Special Request)
I just relocated to Arizona 5 months ago, from Northern California. I have played 15 different courses here, all nice courses, but Kokopelli has my highest vote, I.E. best greens and fairways. The layout was challenging. It wasn't a big deal to drop out of the traps that didn't have sand in them. Great pace of play. No course is perfect, but Kokopelli has enormous potential to be a $200-$300 per round course, and I wouldn't hesitate paying.
I have never played a course that each sand trap requires up to 4 eight foot rakes, due to size, but that's what I imagine, once they fill all 400 traps with sand. It could be 600 sand traps. I only know, there are way to many to count. Wow 1,600 rakes. Other than the GUR sand traps, the maintenance of the course was spot on.
Bad, just plain bad...
At some point maybe like 5 years ago the greenskeeper must have gone on strike, quit, or was fired. The course itself is relatively short and laid out well but the conditions are terrible, this place needs to hire a greens professional, close for a year, plant some grass, fix bunkers and trim out the trees and brush. For $90.00 this is a ripoff there are many, many better options in Phoenix for this price that far exceed the quality. At first sight there is green grass that is watered possibly overwatered because there is standing water everywhere which doesn't help their situation because of carts driving through the puddles. The rest of it would insult a haymeadow to call it that, it is barren hard packed dirt. Again, BAD, just plain BAD.
