great place to play
Loved the pace of play as there were no delays at all. greens in good shape as were the fairways. got to the first tee on time and moved right along..
Good Day for Golf
Pace of play for s Sunday was fantastic. Slowed down around the 7th hole but at the turn was good pace again. Course is in fairly good condition. However, some hole were way over watered and had some very soggy tee boxes, fairways, and around the green.
A well- maintained course in the vineyard country. Slightly overpriced.
The Club has three 9 hole courses. My wife and I had a 1150 tee time and paired up with a father and son pairing. The marshals were very efficient in regulating pace of play. They also provided us with valuable information about the course. Some of the fairways are narrow especially from the blue tees. However, it was nice to see that there weren't many OB stakes on the course. When the wind in blowing, accurate tee shots, for the holes on the ridge, are needed. There were very few trees on the course which was surrounded by lovely vineyards. The condition of the fairways and greens were well maintained. An enjoyable round.
Great value!
Friendly greeting by staff, nice lunch on patio overlooking course.
Very windy in afternoon. Excellent pace of play. You could spend double and come up short of Poppy Ridge.
Only negative would be some difficulty walking course (I'm 67)
due to climbs from some greens to tees.
Was looking forward to playing here, can't wait to get back.
Very Nice course, a little pricey though
This course is very nice and very challenging. There are three 9 hole courses (Merlot, Zinfadel & Chardonnay). We started out playing Merlot and were supposed to play Chardonnay to finish our round but because of a tournament they moved us over to Zinfadel. We were very happy after the round that we got a chance to play Zinfadel. Zinfadel has more water and is a really pretty layout. Our round was pretty slow on the front 9 (because of the tournament right in front of us). Hard to blame the course or the players for that, played the back 9 in less than 2 hours so overall, pace of play was just fine. Now to the course, this course is very much like The Bridges (in San Ramon) with a little Roddy Ranch (in Brentwood/Antioch), lots and lots of out of bounds and blind shots. Overall, it's in great condition and they have plenty of practice greens, & chipping areas to practice your game. There is almost no shade on the whole entire course though. It was built way out in Livermore and it's really out there by itself (which makes the scenery very nice but again doesn't provide much shade on a hot day). I would give the course the following ratings:
Area/Clubhouse: 5/5
Actual course: 4/5
Practice Area: 5/5
Value: 2/5
**I can't give this course a 5/5 review because it's pretty expensive. I love golf and I don't mind paying to go play a course out of the area every once and a while but $90 is a little to rich for my blood. I've played Poppy Hills in Monterey a few times and you can get on there for a better rate ($65) and the course is definitely nicer than Poppy Ridge. Still a lot of fun for someone looking for a challenge, a fun day and someone who doesn't mind spending $100 for the day, you'll have fun!
Very Nice course and great deal to NCGA members
this is a well maintained golf course and having 27 holes is a good mix each time you play. It can be windy here. Especially in the afternoon. But the day I played, the conditions were perfect.
Bunkers
27 hole layout affords flexible schedule. This course really does not have trees and only has a handful of water trouble. The course defends with bunkers and wind in the afternoon. Challenging enough. Great course to play!
Great Course
Beautiful course with friendly staff. Greens are well kept and challenging. Pace of play was fast. My favorite course of the three was merlot.
The Course Could Use Some Work
I played the course two years ago and it was in much better shape...there seemed to be a lot of goffer holes along the perimeter, the bunker sand was wet and packed down, and our cart battery died through 13 holes... The greens were in OK shape....lots of un-repaired ball marks... not what I would have expected from Poppy Ridge.
It was a Pleasure!
It was a pleasure to play Poppy Ridge! My wife and I both struggled with the difficulty for we are both high handicaper's.
However the condition of the course was great to say the least.
I found sand on many shots to the green and it was REAL Sand!
Not Mud/mixed with a little sand as other course's I have played lately that call themselves premiure.
This course has great features
Your pro shop counter was very very kind.
So I impressed from her kindness. And your course is maintained very well to get nice second shot for on green easy. But green condition was standard than other top level of country club. I and my partners want a little bit more fast rolling as it used to do.
Thank you very much.
Nice layout, courteous staff.
The golf course is always in nice shape. Nice to see serious work has begun on sand traps. Staff is very nice.
Slow Bass Golf
We had a 9:30 tee time and we did not finish until 2:40. Lot's of marshals driving around but not actually moving anyone along.. Very disappointing.
Disappointment
Home course of the NCGA, what a disappointment. The pace of play is good only because there are very few golfers out there. The condition of the course certainly can use some improvement . When you paid for high end price to play a round, you shouldn't have to deal with sand bunker under repair or there is no sand. Many of the fairway are bumpy and brow n spot all over the place
Bunkers
The bunkers were under repair , a discount would have already been nice to have been offered.
Nice set up with typical windy conditions makes for a challenging day
With the NCGA discount, the value is pretty decent. The course plays tough with hazards all around. When the wind starts picking up in the late morning and afternoon, the course plays extremely difficult, with 2-3 club changes on approaches at times.
The course needs some better maintenance, but there aren't many out there these days with the money for the upkeep.
Customer service and course condition needs improvement
This course supposed to be one of the better municipal course, I was disappointed at the customer service, the Pro shop tried to force us to have an additional player to join our 3 somes last minute before we start the game, there is nobody in front of us and they stated that the player has been waited for awhile, since there is no one in front of us why he force him to join us. And he could have notify us before we paid as a courtesy. He stated that he doesn't have to tell us because its a public course and he made fun of me that I don't know their rules, the course needs to make money. He would rather to argue and refund our money over helping us. That's very poor customer service and bad judgement call. The course is poor maintain its price.
great course
love playing here, wish it was only 15 minutes from my house instead of an hour on a EARLY SUNDAY morning drive.
Excellent track
Poppy Ridge is made of three different 9's which you play a mixture of two. The course bends in and out of the hillside providing for a lot of elevation change and sloped lies. There aren't many trees, nor is the grass outside of the rough really overgrown so you can recover on errant shots. However, the course adds a fair number of water hazards. Additionally, it can get quite windy, making for even more challenging conditions. On it's cover the course doesn't look overly difficult, but it is sneaky challenging with the elevation, wind, and well placed bunkers. Only downside was the sand in the bunkers; very lackluster compared to everything else.
A Gem
Poppy Ridge is a real treat. I have played here several times, and all 3 of the nines are different and challenging. The greens were in great shape, running quick, but fair. You may need to play here more than once to learn the quirks, because there are a few semi-blind shots. Overall, a great value for the money!
