Nice and Hilly
Fun Course, very challenging to me, but then again so is every course! But this course is in very good shape considering we haven't seen any rain for a year.
The Staff are very friendly-not snooty, so it made for a Great day!
Fun and fast paced!
The course is in good condition. it's fun, long and fair at a great price point . I would recommend it to anyone that comes and visits the Monterey peninsula.
Laguna Seca - A Pleasing, Good Value, Course
I play Monterey courses regularly and this is a bargain. If you are looking for perfection, you will have to play elsewhere and pay far more that an Laguna Seca.
I played this often when I was a teaching pro and found it moderately challenging from the championship tees. Now, at 64, a find it moderately challenging from the white tees. It is a good mixture of: hole shape, elevation changes (except for hole #9), bunkering, green elevations, and difficulty.
Greens speeds are appropriate for the amount the greens are sloped but they are always slightly lumpy...not terribly so, but if you are a "die it in the cup" putter, you will pay dearly.
Laguna has one unpleasant hole (#9) and one marginal hole (#10).
#9 is a trudge, straight up hill, and unreachable for most. To make a bad hole worse, the green is elevated and shoved up against out of bounds at the rear. To the left is a gaping sand trap, to the right is an low hanging oak tree that forces bump-and-run chips to a banked, elevated green. I have never met anyone who likes this hole. It is drudgery at best unless you are long off the tee. If you aren't one, as I no longer am, just relax into a three shot hole. Pressing off this tee will still result in a three shot hole so DON"T. Get some air under your drive...think about switching to a three wood here as pounding a driver into the up-sloping fairway is poor strategy. Again, if you aren't long, then you will need three shots. Don't fight. Instead, enjoy some free easy, no pressure shots and try for a one putt. Just guessing here, but I think the average player's score on this par four is double bogey.
#10's crazily-left-to-right-sloping, steeply downhill fairway sets up the average golfer for a lost ball. It REQUIRES a well-placed straight, tee shot right down the left side, or a draw down the middle-left, both of which, the average recreational golfer is hard-pressed to produce off the tee. Slicers will either layup off the tee with a club that they can control, or resign themselves to hitting three from the tee (AND THEN laying up with a club they can control).
The rest of the holes are a mixture of easy, medium, and challenging holes. #13 is an exceptional hole, worthy of any premium course, especially from the back tees.
Disappointed
I played this course as a student for nearly 40yrs and I was so disappointed at the conditions of the greens. If I had to rate them on a scale from 1-10 they were a 1. As soft and bumpy as a green can be and no, there were no signs of recent aeration. Overall the entire course has way to much water on it. So for these reasons I would not recommend this course to an intermediate player.
Be prepared for the bunkers.
Course in good condition. Pace of play was slow 5.5 hr. round due to a large group ahead of us. Recommend asking pro shop if they have a large group playing that day and what time are they playing.
Consistently Good
I love football season/Sunday play dates. We had an 11am tee time. They had us paired with a single. Got on the course 10 minutes early. Never had anyone in front of us or behind us. Was a 3.5 hour round. Considering the drought , the course was in very good condition. Sorta depressing see dried out ponds, but other than that it was a fun round. We drive from Santa Cruz to play here.
unusually slow
played there many times, but the first time it took over 5 hrs. for a threesome...on a week day morning!
Good course, challenging but manageable
I continue to be amazed at the great conditions California courses seem to be in, despite the drought. This is another GolfNow bargain!
Good course, but needs some work.
I've played her many times over the last 20 years and after an absence of 5 years I just returned. The course is not up to the standards I remembered before I left. The course is still a good one to play, but course maintenance had gone down hill. Fairways and greens are okay, but the rest of the course needs attention.
Laguna September
Fun course, elevations changes create great challenges. Green are fair, but difficult.
Golf Cart was about to go dead and quit on 18. Not good for old folks !!
Great course in a great location
played as a three-some, pace was perfect. Weather could not have been better, course was in great shape, putts rolled true, only 2 tee boxes were a little chewed up. We will be back!
Layout isn't boring
Well designed course makes use of it's location next to a hillside to present elevation gains/losses, a few side hill clinging fairways and a few doglegs in both directions. Mix in some 5mph wind; choose your clubs accurately and get rewarded. Green speed was manageable, but reading the breaks was challenging. I loved this course because it made me think about shot selection & then deliver to in order to reach greens.
Walk in the park
Terrific weather pleasant and warm. Greens just sanded but still rolled well. Views of Laguna seca valley were breathtakingly beautiful. Good layout many challenging holes
Great Course for mid level golfers
Played this course for the first time and loved it. If you're a mid level golfer this is a great course to play. Not too challenging, just enough to make you think about your shot before playing it. Course is in very good shape, fairways are green and the greens are smooth and fast.
Great course
I've played Laguna Seca many times, and every time I really enjoy myself. Course is great, not to difficult or to easy.
Monterey value
A bargain in the high priced Monterey area built by Robert Trent Jones this course sets up well for everyone .
Rude
The guy in the pro shop was very rude I will not golf there anymore he treats people from golf now like low lives he says they don't like golf now but they had 20 times on the site just think he should be fired
Many varied shots and club selections
Not having played this course before. There are some lessons learned about club selection.
The par 5 15th is one in particular because being long off the tee may get you in trouble.
You are better off being a little conservative at times and try to be more accurate with the shots.
There are a lot of interesting holes with the terrain and the deep bunkers.
A lot of fun playing this course.
Good Golf
Great variety of holes, greens in good condition, good exercise walking and the course has a couple hills, but still walk-able. Staff in proshop very friendly and helpful. Will definitely return.
Thanks for taking the time to write such a great and detailed review. Good to hear I'm not the only one who despises the 9th! Love Laguna. Some day I'll figure out how to play the 15th!
