Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Nice day
I really like this course. Great layout. Greens were really good even though aerated. Ball rolled true.
Arthur Hills Course
Only issue was the forward tee''s (ladies tee) sometimes there was not a tee box but an orange dot on the cart path to indicate a forward box. Many times the ladies looked as they were teeing off in the middle of the fairway.
Great course for the value.
I would put this course equal with most of the luxurious Hilton Head courses that would cost twice as much. Bag drop-off staff kindly greeted and loaded our clubs along with cleaning them after 18. Clubhouse staff all helpful. Would recommend to anyone.
Great course!
First time playing, enjoyed the course tremendously! In spite of the greens just being aerated they were still a pleasure. Small holes, filled and rolled w sand, and a bargain at the rate we received!
Nice course
The greens had be aerated but rolled very smoothly. Hardly noticed at all.
Course is good shape. Fairways is good shape but can be even better as summer growing season starts.
Worth the aerated rate to me.
Much improved
This course is making good improvements, since getting rid of the Brown Group as owners. That company is disastrous to any course it purchases, ie: Crescent Pointe, Eagles Pointe, Dolphin Head and more. The greens are new, need more time to get established, fairways still a little thin, but playable. Traps are very playable, unfortunately for me I found that out.
We had a 12:04 PM tee time at the Palmetto Hall Plantation Club Arthur Hills course, upon arriving at the first tee box we were informed the Arthur Hills course was closed for an event(no mention of this from the anyone in the clubhouse when we checked in). The starter moved us to the Cupp course and we had to wait 20+ minutes for teeing up. The pace of play was extremely slow. The on course ranger was rude and made several politically insensitive comments.
I certainly wouldn't hurry back........
Great Day on Hilton Head Island
Arrived at the course and was unloading my clubs when staff came up with a cart, placed my clubs on the cart and told me where the pro shop was to check in for my round. Nothing but friendly staff the rest of the day. The course is in good condition tees to fairway to green. Fairways are wide with trouble along the edges to catch errant shots. Had a great time and will play this course again next time I am on the island.
AVOID THIS COURSE
This course ib barely playable. The greens are a mess and have patches all over them. Do not waste your money on this course. There are a lot of surrounding courses that are far better. The entire feel is that of an old course much in need of a huge infusion of cash.
Nice layout . We really liked the greens. They rolled great. Pace of play for us was very good. Little over 4 hrs.
We waited to play after 12 just to get price down to 118, however it was definitely not worth even the half price. Sod on greens, fairways very very thin, courses at home are three times better for 65 bucks.
Better options out tgere
Course se was ok but you can play better courses for the money.
