Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Not worth the $$$
Luckily we booked through golf now and only payed 60/each I would have been really disappointed if I paid the going rate of $180!
It all depends on how much you pay.
This is a nice course with an interesting layout: no two holes look the same and it is challenging. In general, the greens were very good, fast and firm, on 90% of their surface. The remaining 10% shows significant winter damage. The Bermuda fairways and rough are dormant as should be expected at this time of the year. So all your lies are very thin … an added difficulty. We booked our tee time with Golfnow and paid $70. This was a very good price for this time of the year in Hilton Head Island. This being said, the « normal » price for a tee time before noon is around $190. If you have to pay this much, find somewhere else to play.
Just bad
Sorry, but this course really need some help. And it is very unfortunate since the layout is fun and interesting.
Embarrassing
Booked tee time with GolfNow with expectation of using the new “Smart Play” product. Dumb move on my part. I checked in early on day of golf using GolfNow app, expecting my credit card on file to be charged. Arrived at course expecting to proceed directly to first tee but was told to check in first in Pro Shop. Personnel working front desk accused me of not yet paying for my party of four, but after a somewhat heated discussion, in front of a few other groups, issued me a ticket for the starter, accepting my argument that I thought I had paid already. After thinking about it on the range, I went back in and said I was sure I had paid since I had not received a receipt on line. They charged me a reduced fee for my four rounds and thanked me for “being honest”. We’ll, when I checked my credit card activity, I see I in fact paid for 8 rounds of golf, 4 via Golf Now and 4 at the course. Somebody owes me a refund and an apology, which isn’t as important as the $$$.
Better now it’s been redone
Better course with new greens, some trees still 0ver hang fairways blocking shot to green from good drive. Course knowledge is needed on ball placement. Will play again this year
Good course in poor condition
Practice ground was showing overuse. Hardly any grass , virtually all sand. Greens very good but fairways and tees were poor. Little grass growth on the fairways.
Course was in good overall condition for this time of year and as compared to other public courses.
Getting Better
This solid course has improved from when I last played a few years ago. Greens were very good. Some areas had new grass and traps were much better. Fairways very thin this time of year and work still needed there. Rack rates are a bit too high, but would certainly play again for a deal price.
Challenging
The layout is great. No hole is the same. Plenty of water to keep your attention, and the greens…well I played the Cupp and Hills course back to back days and never did figure out the subtle breaks in the greens. The greens are the most challenging part of the course. They certainly defend the course admirably. Course conditions were just fine for January golf. If you are up to having your game challenged, go and play either of the Plantation Hall courses. You won’t be disappointed.. I will return to try my hand at both courses again..someday.
Great course
Not one negative thing to say about the place, one of the nicest places I’ve got to play around Hilton head!
