Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Interesting course to play!!
Course was in very good condition. It is difficult with undulating greens with forced carries over water. To score you need your A game but enjoyable to play!!
This course is excellent value for the money as well as challenging and beautifully landscaped.
It was awhile since we played this course and it was a great challenge. The course was in great shape overall. The greens are extremely challenging but fair. The staff was great right from getting our golf bags to the starter.
The only thing for a 15 handicap player was if you get in the rough just hit the ball back out to the fairway, don't try to advance the ball unless you have strong wrist and arms. If you hit the ball along distance you will like this course as fairway are generous.
Thank you for your 5-star rating! Book another round with us soon.
Course Fair
Greens were in very good shape. Front nine fairways had lots of mowed grass clippings... Back nine fairways were in much better condition.
A wonderful morning
This is a great course. It is very challenging but quite fair. I played four courses this week and it was in the best condition by far. The greens were especially good.
Always a stern test
Arthur Hills will test your entire game. Demanding tee shots, giant greens with undulations, trees and water and many sand traps will demand your focus on every shot.
Greens were great!
The green were great and a very good layout, the was in excellent condition. Greens much better than the other courses I played this week. But no beverage carts.
8 holes
While on vacation with the family I decided to get up early and play a quick 9 holes. I started at 7am ann's for the first 3 holes I was hitting into the ground crew who were tending to the greens. I skipped hole 4 so I wasn't waiting in the fairway anymore. I ended up getting pushed by the grounds chew the remainder of the 9 holes. I went back to the starter to go play hole 4 and was told to bad, I can't fit you in. After club rental I ended up spending over $100 to play 8 holes. They didn't bother offering a discount or waiving the club rental. I would expect better service from a course such as this.
Outstanding value
Palmetto Hall has become a go to location for me due to convenient location, consistently good course conditions, and great values. My recent trip was no different; the course was in great shape. Palmetto Hall will remain the first courses I look at when setting up a trip. Only minor negative is I like the Cupp layout at Palmetto Hall a bit better than Arthur Hills but both are great courses.
Arthur Hills
The greens and fairways were in great shape. The weather was hot, but the pace of play went smoothly. Unfortunately, the golf carts did not have GPS which would have assisted the round. Arthur Hills designs always does justice to a piece of land and the surroundings.
Enjoyed My Round
First time playing the course. Very playable. Yardage not marked well. Missed having my GPS. Greens were aerated. No mention of it in the pro shop. Revise scorecard to show hole by hole layout instead of aerial view. Mats on driving range of a golf instruction center were shocking to see.
Great course!
Arthur Hills greens were being aerated so puttting was not that rewarding but the course looked great from tee to green. Very nice layout. Guy in pro shop was excellent, friendly, and seem interested in provideing a great experience. Guy at cart house who brought me my balls for practice and handled carts was mean and rude. I don’t know if he was having a bad day or what. He acted like the last thing he wanted to do was his job. Maybe he should find another.
Disappointed
Arrived at the course and was told our tee time was cancelled. The staff refused to accommodate the error and blamed golf now for not calling to cancel. Bad customer service.
Palmetto Hall
Arthur Hills course at Palmetto Hall is one of my favorite courses on Hilton Head. I've been coming here for 30 years and this is in my top five courses on and near the island. It's pretty tight so crooked drives will be penalized!
This course has great greens
The course was in great shape particularly the greens which were excellent. Course layout was good, very straight forward not gimmicky, enjoyed would recommend and would play again
Good coirse
I have played this course several times and as usual it did not fail to challenge me and make my game fun. Anyone who plays This course should find it the same.
Round on Hilton Head
A little confusion that GolfNow should clarify when you are making your booking. On Hilton Head there is Palmetto Dunes Arthur Hills course and Palmetto Hall Arthur Hills course. Very different courses. We booked and drove to palmetto Dunes only to be told our booking was at Pametto Hall - the Pro Shop attendant told us this happens several times a day and they even had preprinted directions to the other course.
The Palmetto Hall course was ok. Challenging layout. Average conditions. Good green complexes. We were able to get out ahead of a large group so pace of play was reasonable. Pro shop did not inform us there where no beverages or snacks available on course. Water was supposed to be very 3rd hole but that was not the case.
For $70 for 18 holes I would suggest there is better value available in the area and would look elsewhere next time.
Thank you for your 4-star rating! We'd love to know how we could have gotten that 5th star from you. We are glad you had a great time and we can help you with that A-Game! We hope that you'll book another round with us soon.
