Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Way over par.
Gents in the pro shop were very personable. Had to pass through two gated roads along the course. Very strange.
Tons of leaves on the back nine. Not very well maintained.
Driving range had few stalls. Most were reserved for members.
Disappointed
Very disappointed with the condition of the course in relation to the green fees.. Won't be going back any time soon..
Course for all golfers
Fairways in great shape for early in the year. A few spots on a few greens but overall course in great shape. Wide fairways and numerous tees makes the course pretty friendly. That is until you get to the verybinfulsting greens. Put lag putts at a premium dir scoring.
Only draw back was sprinklers on while on several greens and two greens with standing water from over watering.
Great layout poor maintenance
Great layout poor maintenance this is a great course unfortunately the maintenance in the last two years has gone downhill you do not expect to hit a ball in the fairway and not be able to find it because of the leaves if you attempt to use one of the ball cleaners at the tee boxes your ball will come out dirtier than it went in.
Great layout, will challenge golfers at any level
Wonderful golf course, good condition for winter months. Excellent layout with demanding holes from tee to green. Bring your A game
Fazio
I have a habit of being 1 hour early of my tee time, today wasn't any different. I drove 10 hours to play golf on Hilton Head Island south Carolina. This is my 3rd trip here 1st was Port Royal last year was Harbour Town this year is Palmetto Dunes. Winter hit this area hard a deep plunge from l, came down from Canadian territory to disturb the northeast from stealing days.of golf at this time of year. 1st, the staff was very welcoming to me when I checked in,, i was given a complimentary YARDAGE BOOK ( all of you courses who don't even have them ) this is a great part of the game,, not the app. There is no range here but a swi g area to warm up. The putting green got my attention with how fast they were. The fairways where green for the most part, rough was brown the Bunkers where very nice i was in a few mot many though. Cart path in some spots are in need of repair. But on a scale from 1 to 10 a solid 7 or light 8. Play it when you come here.
Review - Arthur Hills - Palmetto Hall Plantation
Weather was cold - but the conditions of the course were great. Staff was very friendly. Fairways have a nice flow and offer some challenges. Greens are tough and well protected. This was the fifth course we played in Hilton this week - highly recommend this course over Golden Bear, Bear Creak or even RTJ. In addition to the golf we also had lunch in a wonderful club house. Great experience!
Great Course On Hilton Head Island
The Arthur Hills course in Palmetto Hall is one of my favorite courses on Hilton Head. Challenging, beautiful and always in good condition.
nice course, good round
good conditions , steady pace , nice staff, no issues
Given Price Better Alternatives
Course was more like a public course than a private course. Never saw a marshall or any other staff to move along play.
Course was not tidy and felt worn. Given other alternative on the island avoid unless it is a last resort
The only person who seemed to was at the bag drop who assigned the cart.
Where Golf is Fun
We had an amazing day of golf here, the weather was perfect, we paired up with another couple and this course was very impressive.
We had a 9 AM tee time but our friendly pro shop guy said we could go right out now
if we wanted.
Ron was the nice starter who got us going.
There was nobody in front of us for the entire 3.5 hour round.
The fairways were pristine and cut short so the ball got rolling good.
The fairways here are wide with little Bermuda grass encroachment.
The amazing variety of scenery and the presence of tall pines that occasionally come in
make this course so much fun.
The greens here are rolled twice a week and are slick and tricky. With all the undulations
on these greens, your putting skills will be tested. It's a good bet that these are some of the best rolling greens on Hilton Head Island.
There's some interesting variety in this Hills layout. There are tough par fives and short and tough par fours, but the par three holes are really difficult.
Hole #18 is a nasty narrow dogleg left with a lake in play along the left side. This hole requires a long tee shot to the right-center avoiding all the daunting berms placed along the right side.
The landing area for your second shot is too narrow and then you have another long shot over the water and into the wind. This little devil should be a par five hole.
Great layout. Course was in very good condition except for a few of the forward tees used by my wife. They offered a very good rate for tee times before 8:00am. We were able to play 18 in 3 hours and beat the hear. Arthur Hills courses are always interesting and this one is no different.
Good course. Challenging holes. Would definitely return.

Good course. Great layout, average greens, good pace of play .good value
Impressive
Palmetto Hall is a beautiful area. The Arthur Hills course is outstanding. Greens were rolled and cut, traps were well maintained, fairways and tees were in great shape and the layout is great.
I will definitely play here again.
Arthur Hills
The course was in great shape. You will need to manage you shots. The greens tend to be fast, and easy to overshoot. Great value for the money.
Thank you for playing with us! We are very glad to hear you enjoyed your round an will pass along your kind words to the staff. We hope to see you again soon!
Nice layout with tees for all handicaps. Fairways were great. And very wide. Several greens had a some bare spots but not bad. Greens are very undulating with few if any flat areas putting a premium on lag putts. Good pace of play early in the day. Only problem was sprinklers on three greens as we tried to putt thru puddles
