The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.

"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.

"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."

Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Always a stern test

Arthur Hills will test your entire game. Demanding tee shots, giant greens with undulations, trees and water and many sand traps will demand your focus on every shot.

8 holes

While on vacation with the family I decided to get up early and play a quick 9 holes. I started at 7am ann's for the first 3 holes I was hitting into the ground crew who were tending to the greens. I skipped hole 4 so I wasn't waiting in the fairway anymore. I ended up getting pushed by the grounds chew the remainder of the 9 holes. I went back to the starter to go play hole 4 and was told to bad, I can't fit you in. After club rental I ended up spending over $100 to play 8 holes. They didn't bother offering a discount or waiving the club rental. I would expect better service from a course such as this.

Outstanding value

Palmetto Hall has become a go to location for me due to convenient location, consistently good course conditions, and great values. My recent trip was no different; the course was in great shape. Palmetto Hall will remain the first courses I look at when setting up a trip. Only minor negative is I like the Cupp layout at Palmetto Hall a bit better than Arthur Hills but both are great courses.

Arthur Hills

The greens and fairways were in great shape. The weather was hot, but the pace of play went smoothly. Unfortunately, the golf carts did not have GPS which would have assisted the round. Arthur Hills designs always does justice to a piece of land and the surroundings.

Enjoyed My Round

First time playing the course. Very playable. Yardage not marked well. Missed having my GPS. Greens were aerated. No mention of it in the pro shop. Revise scorecard to show hole by hole layout instead of aerial view. Mats on driving range of a golf instruction center were shocking to see.

Great course!

Arthur Hills greens were being aerated so puttting was not that rewarding but the course looked great from tee to green. Very nice layout. Guy in pro shop was excellent, friendly, and seem interested in provideing a great experience. Guy at cart house who brought me my balls for practice and handled carts was mean and rude. I don’t know if he was having a bad day or what. He acted like the last thing he wanted to do was his job. Maybe he should find another.

Disappointed

Arrived at the course and was told our tee time was cancelled. The staff refused to accommodate the error and blamed golf now for not calling to cancel. Bad customer service.

Palmetto Hall

Arthur Hills course at Palmetto Hall is one of my favorite courses on Hilton Head. I've been coming here for 30 years and this is in my top five courses on and near the island. It's pretty tight so crooked drives will be penalized!

Round on Hilton Head

A little confusion that GolfNow should clarify when you are making your booking. On Hilton Head there is Palmetto Dunes Arthur Hills course and Palmetto Hall Arthur Hills course. Very different courses. We booked and drove to palmetto Dunes only to be told our booking was at Pametto Hall - the Pro Shop attendant told us this happens several times a day and they even had preprinted directions to the other course.

The Palmetto Hall course was ok. Challenging layout. Average conditions. Good green complexes. We were able to get out ahead of a large group so pace of play was reasonable. Pro shop did not inform us there where no beverages or snacks available on course. Water was supposed to be very 3rd hole but that was not the case.

For $70 for 18 holes I would suggest there is better value available in the area and would look elsewhere next time.

A tough and long tract

It is important to play the correct tees on this course. Being a 10 handicapper, I found the 6400 yards was too long and therefore was not enjoyable hitting the driver and three wood numerous times. I have no problem with the course or conditions. The Pro shop got us out about an hour earlier on this day, so we moved right along. Getting the Golf Now Hot Deal was a bonus.

Good to average course by Hilton Head standards

We booked a tee time at this course on the recommendation of a guy we met in a local golf store. We were already playing the three Palmetto Dunes courses during the week and had a spare day available to play a new course. This was his firm favorite of the moderately priced (non-Sea Pines) options in the area.

In all honesty, we felt just a little disappointed after the round. Although the course was very pleasant, it wasn't spectacular in any way, with the possible exception of the 18th hole which is a gem to look at and a great test of golf. The range facilities were ok, nothing special and frankly, the service provided to us by the staff was a notch or two down from the RTJ course we played at Palmetto Dunes the day before. The course was also a notch down but to be fair, so was the greens fee ($50 cheaper to be precise).

The course is absolutely fine and well priced compared with those of a similar standard elsewhere on the Island i.e. better than say Shipyard, not as good as Palmetto Dunes or Sea Pines. If I were asked the same question we asked, I would probably point someone towards Olde South rather than here.

The huge let down for us on the day was the speed of play. The foursome in front of us took more than 5 hours to complete their round and refused to invite us through on the several occasions we caught them on the tee box. The marshal told us he had warned them the first time he came around but this didn't make any difference and it was another 9 holes before he returned again, this time just for a wave as he drove by. It really is frustrating when a facility does not take the initiative to care for the majority of their guests when a group is clearly holding everyone up.

Nice challenging layout

Really enjoyed my round at Palmetto Hall Arthur Hills. I played from the Blues and found it to be a great challenge. My friend Played from a forward set of tees(Black.Senior?) and had a great time. The layout is plenty challenging for a low handicapper but is also playable for the less skilled player. Its a great break from many of the island courses where every hole looks the same. Most of the holes are different enough that they are memorable. Conditions were good. . Grass still coming in after the longer than normal winter in SC. Good hybrid Bermuda greens, not super fast and a little grainy but tricky. Great finishing hole. Staff quite pleasant, only complaint was. No beverage cart on a 85 degree day. Will return again!
