Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Great lay out
Great course at a reasonable price. Conditions good for late Feb. Every hole different with plenty of challenging shots. A definite must play. Just hope the winds are downloaded
nice golf course
you need to be ready to curve your ball, deal with wind, water hazards, smaller greens that were not in good shape... embrace the game and have fun.
Tee time debacle!
My tee time was a 1pm. Didn't get off until 2pm. They ran out of carts!!!!! Couldn't start unti carts came off the course. We barely finished before dark. They said they had carts that were broken. My reply is to fix them. Poor management. Course was just average. Nothing special. The only thing nice I can say is the staff was nice.
Squandered opportunity
Palmetto Hall is a private club that allows non-members to play. If you are not a member, you will know it. This course is very poorly managed. They don't have enough carts for a full load. We had to wait for a cart so long we missed our tee time. Only members are allowed on the course before 12pm, even if tee times are open. On a busy day, this sets up a situation where all of the non-members are standing in line waiting for the members to return their carts...it's a cluster. The other big negative on this course is the driving range. It's a sand pit due to terrible turf management practices. You can't plant Bermuda on a driving range. It goes dormant in the winter, browns and won't grow back. They had thrown down seed everywhere but no barricades to keep people AND carts off it. No evidence of fertilization or watering.
My advice to Palmetto Hall is to either embrace a semi-private structure fully or stay completely private. right now, it just seems like you're allowing non-members to play solely to take their money in return for a terrible experience.
Solid Course
Excellent layout and is in excellent condition for off season. Top facility from driving range, bag drop and pro shop. Greens are quick with good breaks. Will play it again soon.
You get what you pay for
1st time we played this course, a real treat in spite of cart path only restriction due to rain the day before. A must play if you stay in the Hilton Head area.
Great layout, top condition
Played the Arthur Hills course and it was in top shape. We played in 3.5 hours. The bunkers were all groomed and had excellent firmness and playability. The greens are good and have pretty good speed. The staff was welcoming and the clubhouse grill had some nice drink and appetizer specials after the round. Will try it again for sure.
GreaT course
I really enjoyed my round because of the layout and condition. I will return and bring a friend.
Course is a beautiful course
This course could be one of my favorites. However if you miss the greens by more than 15-20 feet you are on dirt. I say again dirt. I have a single digit handicap but trying to get up and down off of dirt is difficult. It took us 2:30 to play the front nine. Evidently, the marshals can't open their mouths because they didn't.
Course still has great character as always
The staff was great at greeting and taking care of your golf. The course was in pretty good shape for the amount of play it's had.the pace of play was a little bit slower than usual the greens were a little rough in places due to the weather here lately, but all in all it's still a good day to play here.
Enjoyable for the whole family
Course layout is interesting. Fairly easy from the forward tees yet challenging from the tips. Most hazards can be seen from the tees.
Course conditions were good for this time of the year.
Class Coursse
This is a great golf course. It is difficult but reasonable. It has some interesting features like rectangular sand traps here and there but they neither add nor detract from the fact that it is simply a very enjoyable and pliayable golf course.
Very Friendly Staff and Fair Course Layout
From the moment you are greeted at the bag drop through the check-in at the pro shop to the starter, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The course was in great shape especially considering the amount of rain that had fallen in recent days. The layout is very fair and allows for recover of a wayward shot. Highly recommend every golfer put Palmetto Hall on your play list.
palmetto hall cup course
Excellent! Have played this course a couple of times, and it never dissapoints !
Good track
The front and back nines are quite different. It almost looks like the back nine which is cut out of heavy oak forest was built long before the front nine. The back nine is narrow, more dog legs, overhanging trees in the fairway and even tall trees in front of greens to mess with your mind. Carry over water was difficult on some holes when we were directly into a strong wind. Overall, great track and good price.
Nice course, not special
Good course for the flat land area. Nothing particularly scenic but 18th hole on Arthur Little course is full and requires your attention
True greens
Nice course. Nice true rolling greens. Could be faster. Good experience overall
Hard shots course
Played from white tees. Green are in good shape but pace was a little slower than expected. They have plenty of elevation changes with some back stopsychological with some pin positions. Bunkers will vary with sand consistency. Lots of dogleg with trees to block out one side or the other. Plays like harbor town with the shot making. Don't get confused with another course with a similar name. Golf now gave bad information on correct location.
Nice course, good value.
Nice course, not too intimidating. Very friendly staff. Greens were difficult to read, so I got a little frustrated considering I was on many of them in regulation and only had one birdie....lol...life is good! ✌
