The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.

"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.

"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."

Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Excellent course for the above average golfer. Challenging track with elevated, rolling greens, lots of water to be avoided, and selected, well placed trees to navigate around.

Tee shots important

We played right after the big rain. It was cart path only. It was playing long because of the wet conditions. Its a very nice course and worth the money.

HHI Golf at its Finest

This one is tucked away on the sorta/kinda heel of the island, and it is set so far back from the main road that once you are on the golf course, ALL man-made noises ceases to exist. It truly is a great total golf experience.

Staff was super-friendly. Course was in excellent shape. I played from the whites and it was challenging enough for me. Most fairways are fairly wide, but the greens are smallish and well-protected, so you need to hit good shots from tee to green to score here.

And, proving that golf is not so much about "where" you play, but "who" you play with, the pro shop/starter hooked me up with two of the nicest gentlemen (Dave and Gary) I've met in a long, long time. I'm playing every day this week while here on vacation, and I'll be hard-pressed to have a more friendly and enjoyable round of golf.

Bottom line: play this track; you will not be disappointed!

Really strong track...

I had heard about this course and was excited about the chance to play. I enjoyed the round immensely.

First, the staff could not have been more friendly. They were delightful. Second, the golf course gave me all that I could handle.

I particularly liked the look from the tee boxes on most of the holes. It was pleasing to the eye and seemed like there was plenty of room to drive the golf ball. Now, don't mistake that with meaning that this course is easy, because it is not.

It played long for me and I found myself hitting longer irons into the greens than I had hoped. But the challenge was great and the day was spectacular. If you need to make par on the par-4 18th hole to shoot a good score, good luck. It's a beast.

Totally recommend this place.

Excellent and challenging

Pretty long and not easy as a result. This and it's sister course (Cupp) are both a very good challenge.

I have played a few times and it has not been too busy which is nice
