Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Breezy Winter Golf
Noon tee time found the course very breezy. The fairways and greens were in excellent condition. Greens were fast. The staff was very helpful and friendly at check-in and bag drop. The pace of play was good even though the wind caused some issues with drives and approach shots. Will play again through hot deal. Good value for price. Definitely would recommend to others. Didn't check out 19th hole today.
first timer review
Course drains very well. Greens were in super shape. fairways were tightly mown for winter. Staff was friendly and very helpful.
Highly recommend the complex.
Getting better
Very enjoyable. They just reopened with resurfaced greens and we're still a little bumpy. Should be awesome to play by September.
Disappointed!!!
Great layout! Terrible greens! Staff was not friendly at all! So many better courses to play. Pace of play was great because nobody was on the course!
challenging lay out
course had some bare spots but to be expected this time of year, played in under 4 hours, the greens rolled true although they had been top dressed recently
Just ok
Greens were top dressed and fairways were rough. Surprised that the course wasn't in better shape - bit of a let down for golf on Hilton Head Island.
Awful
Spend your money elsewhere.
Great Layout, Nice Greens
My dad, brother and I come to Hilton Head every year to get away and Palmetto Hall - Cupp course is hard to beat. We are all 10 handicaps and below and really enjoyed the layout of the course. The greens were very firm but fair and rolled beautifully for this time of the year. It was a bit tough to hit from the fairways and chip around the greens due to the grass not being fully grown in and the course being a little on the dry side (due to the time of the year). Overall the conditions were very nice. They give you complimentary range balls, give you ice for coolers, and are very helpful. We will play this course again when we come back next year. It's a must play in Hilton Head.
very nice layout
Some of greens were in rough shape but overall course layout wad excellent
Best on course player assistant I have ever encountered.
The course layout was good. I met John (player assistant from Buffalo) who handed me a business card with his phone number in case I had any issues during my round. A really nice touch. Best in class. That was the highlight.
Unfortunately, the course conditions were poor, especially the greens. Some were almost "unputtable." Many had large diseased areas with no grass.
Waited on every shot on the back 9.
With this many choices on HHI, not likely to go back.
Pretty Course
Enjoyed our round. Some greens In poor shape but understandable for winter golf.
great course
very nice golf course. everyone was friendly and professional, from the bag drop, to the clubhouse check-in, to the starter. very nice course and very good and challenging green's. will definitely play this course again. restaurant, clubhouse is very, very nice and top of the line.--BOB!!
Fun in the Sun!!
Pace of play was around 4 hrs 15 min. Lots of water and traps. Multiple tee blocks to allow the high handicappers an opportunity to score well. Yet challenging for the mid tool handicappers. Course condition and layout was very good.
Somewhat Challenging Course
I am a short hitter (normally play Sr tees) and found regular men's tees a bit too long off the tee for me. Otherwise, course was in good shape and play was challenging.
Intersting and fair.
We played this course today and enjoyed it. There is plenty of water but it is fair if you pay attention. The bunkers were hard pack and the tees were a bit bare but we attribute this to the time of year. The pace of play was good. . We would definitely play here again.
Very playable course
The course was in decent but not great condition. Greens did roll true and were very quick. Only one of the staff we met there were very helpful. Cart guy was all but useless. Starter was helpful. Signage is sorely lacking for players there for the first time. Long distances between holes with no signs caused significant delays for us and the two guys crawling up our back. Too many great courses on Hilton Head to come back here anytime soon.
nice layout, terrible bunkers, fair to poor greens
nice layout, terrible bunkers, fair to poor greens
good value
great course...fairways and greens were in winter condition
Nice Course.....Just Wrong Day
Course was in excellent condition given time of year. Unfortunately the amount of play seriously impacted the enjoyment for the day. The facilities for some reason didn't have enough carts to handle the afternoon flow resulting in groups standing around waiting. Once on the course play was extremely slow making for a long day. Will try the course a second time to see if this day was the norm or the exception.
