The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Palmetto Hall Pass
We had one day following attending The Masters to tee it up and selected Palmetto Hall - Arthur Hills course on Hilton Head. Without question this place sits comfortably in the top 10% of bad courses for the money that I've played in 40 years of golf. Tee boxes worse than an old county track in the Midwest. Spotty fairways and unkept bunkers. Greens were a C+ in terms of condition. That's the highest rating I could give the place on anything. Certainly not what we had in mind visiting Hilton Head for the first time. Avoid playing here, not worth it even if the round was free.
Challenging but fun layout in lovely natural environs, except for nearby airfield with frequent flights close to several holes. The fairways had not been overseeded which left them quite tight with marginally thin grass.
Past its Prime
The overall course condition was mediocre at best. The bathrooms were in horrible shape, very much an embarrassment to the club. The greens were very slow. Will not go back.
My Review
Maybe to early in season. To many leaves all over course. Didn’t see one ranger people behind us came up and had some words couldn’t go any faster than the slow group in front of us. To much money for coarse conditions

Maybe too soon but the leaves were everywhere making it hard to find your ball. Pace was slow didn’t see one ranger. Not worth the money
WHERE'S THE MIDDLE GROUND?
Nice track, great greens, friendly staff. However, there are "gray" colored tees which we were not advised about, nor do they appear on the scorecards. This ia a big miss, since the WHITE tees are over 6250 yards, and the next set (GREEN) are only 5009 yards. The GRAY tees are somewhere in between, which we would have preferred (being intermediate golfers, but ion our 70s age wise). What would it cost to print new scorecards (they were very basic, not fancy) and offer golfers a decent choice between too short (GREEN) and too long (WHITE) tees?
