Arthur Hills at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
The experience of playing the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall takes on an added dimension when you discover that the golf course was built on an old Civil War garrison. History aside, however, the Hills Course, which opened in 1991, stands proudly as yet another grand achievement by the legendary Ohio-born designer.
"At Palmetto Hall, golfers have to deal with another element when they miss their mark - the rough," said former TravelGolf.com writer Shane Sharp. "The cabbage is grown thick in the summer months, consisting of a deadly blend of Bermuda around the greens and Bahia along the fairways.
"Arthur Hills can be notorious for creating difficult courses like his course at Palmetto Hall. This course really demands accuracy or you can put some big numbers on your scorecard."
Playing the forward tees will give resort golfers enough of a challenge to keep them happy, while better golfers will be heavily challenged from the tips, which play nearly 7,000 yards, with a slope of 136.

Great golf course
Would play it again, no doubt.
Beautiful scenery!
Very good shape!
Enjoyable!
Played as a single…..paired up with another single. Just a nice relaxing round. Some tough holes, some tricky holes!
78 from the Blue tees….first time there!
I’ll take it
Better places than this on HHI
Quite disappointed with this course. Good grass on tee boxes were sparse while these areas were heavy with quack grass. Layout was OK but quirky on several holes, including a short par 3 where you must play a draw to even get to the center of the green. Fairways and greens were in good condition. Bunkers were excellent. Was very disappointed that the driving range was closed so no warmup was possible. Hefty green fees for a middle-of- the week round. There are much better courses for similar green fee rates on Hilton Head Island.
Greens were the slowest i have played in years. There were no bare spot, plenty of grass…too much! It was if they had not been cut in over a week. Very disappointing. Very!
Not my preferred place but worked on short notice
This was not my first option but they had openings on short notice. The coarse is beautiful and challenging. I found the pace of play to be a little rushed which seemed odd since the club house had mentioned they where a little slow and they where following a play when your ready schedule. This is a message that was not relayed out on the coarse.
I found the fairways to be a little hard but that is not that uncommon for summer play. But at this price point I would have expected them to be a little softer. I live in Texas so I get hard fast fairways in the summer but even here ate this price you will find the fairway much softer with less bounce.
Over all I enjoyed the coarse and would have liked it better had you not felt so rushed.
Hilton Head golf
Palmetto Hall was chosen because of its proximity to Savannah. What a great track. Greens were quick and true, not tricked up. Not a bad lie in any fairway. In fact, quite a few of perfect lies. I'll play there again if I'm ever back in Hilton Head area. A real sweet find.
Better courses for the price
When visiting HHI, I expect inflated greens fees given the resort nature but to charge $160-$180 for this course is unreasonable. I played Hilton Head National the very next day, for $30 less, and it was night and day in terms of course conditions. The Arthur Hills course had weeds in the apron, gopher damage all along the fairway, the cart paths are in rough shape, no gps in the carts, tee boxes under repair and the list goes on.
