Oyster Reef features elevated tees and lush fairways lined by thick stands of live oak and pine. Numerous doglegs accented by strategically located mounds and fairway bunkers, call for well-planned tee shots. Varying sizes of greens with well-defined tiers place a premium on precise approach shots.

The par-3 sixth hole, which plays 192 yards from the back tees to a green set against a backdrop of Port Royal Sound, is one of the most visually spectacular holes on Hilton Head. Oyster Reef is now a semi-private member-owned club with a limited number of tee times for guest play,

The carefully-maintained facility, designed by noted course architect Rees Jones, continues to be a favorite destination for serious golfers as well as a favorite with locals.

What happened?

Played Oyster Reef first time in March of 22. Beautiful well maintained course and greens were stellar. Played here in July 2023 and was thoroughly disappointed. Driving range tee boxes looked like they had not been changed for a week. Hard to find a spot of grass to put the ball on. Practice green was really jacked up with large bare spots covered up with sand. When we played the course, about 6-7 greens were the same atrocious quality as the practice green. Decided that any green hit was an automatic two putt because of the poor conditions of these greens. Not what you would expect at this price point. Tee boxes, bunkers and the rest of the course was in good shape. It’s quite scenic with all the tall pine trees surrounding almost every fairway. Layout is kind of boring with dog legs on a majority of holes but that might just be a matter of personal preference.

Staff was nice in the pro shop but food cart lady was outright rude. Rolled with her eyes because we chose to pay for a sandwich and a Gatorade with a credit card rather then cash. The person wiping off the clubs and getting them loaded in and out of the cart served zero purpose. Couldn’t even secure the club bags and we had to readjust them ourselves on the course.

I don’t know what happened to this place. Perhaps they have new management or something. Quality has really taken a step back since I played here 15 months ago.

Not worth the cost

Course was not fairly priced for what you get. Almost every hole is the same dogleg. Pace of play was atrocious, waited on every shot. If it only cost $80 to play then it would be fair, but it was double that.

Nice course Nice pace

It was my first time playing this course. It was in pretty good shape for the most part a few greens had a few patches of burnout but they rolled pretty true. The pace was good little under 4 hrs for a late morning tee time which was nice on a hot day. Would play again on my next trip to Hilton head.

Great time at Oyster Reef

First time playing Oyster Reef and it was a lot of fun. There were some rough patches on some of the greens but it did not effect our play. The staff was extremely friendly. Having the first tee time of the day really helped with the pace of play. Even got to see a gator today.

Disappointed

We came back to this course because of the layout and tavern - the conditions were poor this time around - the guy in the pro shop said it was in great condition but the greens were almost unplayable - pace of play was horrific and the staff in the tavern tried but was obviously not equipped to handle the number of guests. Very disappointing overall.

Great course. Challenging and fair

Staff was amazing. Course excellent shape. $200 per is pretty steep W/ similar courses in the area and the “locals” playing for under $100..

Wet weather

Kayak Golf

It was raining and had been raining most of the night. Course was saturated, range was closed, and the course should have been as well. They said no rain checks because they are open for play. My wife and I said we would not play under those conditions and left. They obviously need the money, and they are not interested in taking care of the golfers even if they are Heritage Plus members.

Nice track

Played June 14,2003. Nice layout. Greens where still sandy from punching. 9 had a temporary green . It would have been nice being told this before we teed off. We would have played anyway. But would be nice to know ahead of time. Ate at the restaurant which the food was outstanding. They are a little "lite" on help

Course conditions

I was told prior to booking a tee time that aeration had occurred 2 weeks before I booked which would give the greens 4 weeks to recover before we traveled to HHI to play. When we got to the course we found that it had only been 12 to 14 days since aeration. Price was not discounted for the poor conditions of the greens

Other than that things were great. Would love to play it again when greens were in top shape
