Oyster Reef Golf Course
About
Oyster Reef features elevated tees and lush fairways lined by thick stands of live oak and pine. Numerous doglegs accented by strategically located mounds and fairway bunkers, call for well-planned tee shots. Varying sizes of greens with well-defined tiers place a premium on precise approach shots.
The par-3 sixth hole, which plays 192 yards from the back tees to a green set against a backdrop of Port Royal Sound, is one of the most visually spectacular holes on Hilton Head. Oyster Reef is now a semi-private member-owned club with a limited number of tee times for guest play,
The carefully-maintained facility, designed by noted course architect Rees Jones, continues to be a favorite destination for serious golfers as well as a favorite with locals.

Nice course but be prepared for 4 1/2s
Oyster Reef is a nice payout with challenging holes for all levels of golfers. Despite heavy play, the course is in good condition. Not a walkers course due to gaps between holes within community.
Only complaint was pace of play.....15 minutes per hole is too slow and no rangers on course moving people along.
Surprise in a bad way
We booked with GolfNow for $65 USD per player and when we arrived the charge at the course was $105 USD per player. This took some of the enjoyment out of the day and was very disappointing. Otherwise, everything was great.
The golf course staff and club house restaurant are wonderful!
The front nine fairways were a little dry and the greens had blemishes, but the back nine conditions were excellent. The course is spread out for serene and unforgettable golf experience.
Pace of Play
Rangers need to enforce pace of play. % hour rounds are ridiculous.
For the price you can't find better
A very nice course, fairways were typical for early -mid March but beautiful greens and good ter boxes. Staff was friendly, professional and helpful. A great value since we played other cheaper courses and walked off 2 of them due to poor condition of the courses.
Thank you for the review, we do appreciate you sharing your experience with us and do hope to see you again soon.
Poor pace of play otherwise very hood
The pace of play was 2:45 hours on the front and 2 hours on the back.
The course is very playable and offers some nice views.
Even with cart path only in rain course didn’t disappoint
Had a 11:48 hot deal tee-time and it was drizzling and the forecast was for heavier rain later in day so I called in the am and they said to come out earlier and they would move us up. I was apprehensive because they also said it would be cart path only. Had there’s some and We went for it at 9:30 the rain stopped by our first tee shot at 9:45. Course was in great shape the overnight rain had little effect on it (I doubt we needed the cart path only), but had course to ourselves. Pro shop and starter couldn’t be nicer - and course is by far the jewel of the heritage courses. Also played shipyard and robbers row and not a comparison in terms of course and staff friendliness. Robbers’ does has much nicer practice facility. The day before we played oyster had 215 golfers 5 plus hour round, I would much rather play in light rain in 3:45 but to this point course was in great shape for getting that much play. Also, probably worth paying more for the earlier tee time or do the 3 play pass heritage offers. The course layout provides almost ever hole a unique and private experience with great risk reward.
Underwhelming
The course was in bad shape with the greens having a lot of sand and in some cases other damaged areas. For the greens fees we paid, which were beyond reasonable, the course was not worth it. Very disappointed with the course. The pace of play was not managed. We waited on every hole and just about every shot.
A disappointing course
The conditioning of the course was not worth the price of the green fee. There was a Marshall on the course but he was more interested in looking for golf balls in the thick rough than making sure pace-of-play was being respected. It was a solid 4hr 30min round, maybe even 4hr 45min round.
We are very sorry to hear this and would appreciate if you could let us know when and what time you played so we can try to figure out where we need to focus our attention.
Thank you.
One of my favourites
I have been playing this course for at least 20 years during my winter stop in HH. It has a terrific layout and a hole that runs out to the Sound (priceless in HH.) Play was jammed up on the back nine 9it was late in the day) so because I was a single I left my group 9with apologies) and asked the cart attendant if I could redo the front nine. His response was fantastic. "Go for it" he said and play as many as you can because I will be here until long after dark. I played a full nine in about 60 minutes. Thanks "Ian" for your help and for making sure that Oyster Reef remains my favourite golf course on the island.
Thank you for the review! Please come see us again.
Nice somewhat challenging course.
Pace of play (7:40 AM start) was perfect. A leisurely 4 hrs for our 3 players. Weren't pushing players in front, weren't being pushed by players behind. Staff very friendly and informative. Conditions were good considering still spring (3/9) but not great. Greens were very nice, and true. Scoring could've been lower but unfamiliarty with course cost us more than several strokes. A nice course but priced a bit steeper than condition and play warranted.
Good Condions and Pace of Play
Although a bit pricey, Oyster Reef is a quality layout with good conditions. Pace of play 4:20. seven.
Thank you for the review.
Pace of play too slow - 5 hour round
We mentioned to the Marshall after the first nine took over 2.5 hours to try and get the groups ahead of us to pick up the pace. The men right in front of us were hitting from a tee box that was too long for them, they would wait too long to hit their shots and were playing 2 or 3 balls each. The Marshall didn’t do anything. Very disappointed.
Nice course that gets heavy play
Teed off at noon and starter said they had 215 reservations that day. Front 9 took 21/2 hours. Due to slow beginner players ahead, had to wait ever shot. At the turn the Starter offered rain check if you wanted .
Back nine clear sailing and did not have to wait for a single shot, great fun. Back nine was best layout very challenging.
Greens putted true and were in good shape especially considering the level of play it gets.
Overall well run course, I will return.
