Oyster Reef features elevated tees and lush fairways lined by thick stands of live oak and pine. Numerous doglegs accented by strategically located mounds and fairway bunkers, call for well-planned tee shots. Varying sizes of greens with well-defined tiers place a premium on precise approach shots.

The par-3 sixth hole, which plays 192 yards from the back tees to a green set against a backdrop of Port Royal Sound, is one of the most visually spectacular holes on Hilton Head. Oyster Reef is now a semi-private member-owned club with a limited number of tee times for guest play,

The carefully-maintained facility, designed by noted course architect Rees Jones, continues to be a favorite destination for serious golfers as well as a favorite with locals.

Nice course, very friendly staff

Haven't been to HHI in years, so wasn't sure what the course's condition would be like in early April. And since at my home there's still snow on the ground, seeing leaves on the trees and green grass is a bonus. Overall the course looked good for this time of year. Some greens under repair, several approaches rock hard, but the sand traps were good and pin placements on the greens took most repairs out of play. And though we waited on almost every tee to hit, we still finished in just over 4 hrs.

Course needs work

On course washroom terrible. Green tee boxes not maintained at all. Areas around greens very poor condition. No marshal to monitor slow play.

Not good value for price.

Nice Course

This was our first time playing this course. There are a lot of sand bunkers that make it challenging, but most of the holes are straight. One of the holes gives players a beautiful ocean view. Overall, we really enjoyed the course. Food in the pub was not very good.

Conditions

Oyster Reef had a virus issue on several greens/holes.

The incoming 16-18 fairway edges, and their greens, had many sod “cut ins” which were dying, unleveled, and obviously unwatered. The 18th green had a virus running throughout half of it. While the18th hole, from 75 yards in to the green’s fringe, was massively being reconstructed, in order to create 2 greens/choices for future players. All of these conditions were not even mentioned to my group before my reservations, or even upon arriving for our tee time. It just seemed to be unimportant to Oyster Reef, as if this was always typical course/green conditions there.

A cart attendant told my group about this, and the other items, upon asking him first, after finishing our round.

He too, was unapologetic or concerned about whether this mattered or not to us.

~ Disappointed

Affordable by Hilton Head Island standards

This is a very nice course with a challenging layout. The greens are in very good condition but the Bermuda fairways are still dormant, which should be expected at this time of the year. With the notable exception of the lady running the food/beverage cart, the staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. They have a small but nice driving range and a rather small practice green. No practice bunker. It is always fun and challenging to play this course. We will certainly be back next year even if the course plays too long for women.

Bring your sand wedge

Weather was terrific, and pace of play steady for a Saturday afternoon.

Course was in good shape, with the exception of a few greens that were mottled.

Most greens are guarded by multiple bunkers, so be prepared.

All in all, an enjoyable afternoon.
