Oyster Reef Golf Course
About
Oyster Reef features elevated tees and lush fairways lined by thick stands of live oak and pine. Numerous doglegs accented by strategically located mounds and fairway bunkers, call for well-planned tee shots. Varying sizes of greens with well-defined tiers place a premium on precise approach shots.
The par-3 sixth hole, which plays 192 yards from the back tees to a green set against a backdrop of Port Royal Sound, is one of the most visually spectacular holes on Hilton Head. Oyster Reef is now a semi-private member-owned club with a limited number of tee times for guest play,
The carefully-maintained facility, designed by noted course architect Rees Jones, continues to be a favorite destination for serious golfers as well as a favorite with locals.

Poor condition
The course was in poor condition. The fairways were dried out brown grass. The greens were bumpy as if they had just been punched. The course layout is not good. Many of the dog legs were replicated with sand traps on each of the turns in the exact same position. I will not return here to play
Liars and lazy
Played here yesterday. We live in the community this course is in. We’ve played it several times and every time have had an issue with the marshal or starter. Yesterdays experience was beyond terrible.
It was a rainy day with the rain looking like it would stop around 330. Called the pro shop at 2pm to make sure they were open. Was informed they were open $50 for nine holes $65 for 18 on the phone. I had checked golf now and you could see that you could select a tee time for 18 holes until 3:54 for 65 dollars. You still can select this time today (this becomes important later.
When we arrive to the course at 2:20 I park next to the bag drop. The older gentleman that handles the carts comes over and asks “what are you guys doing” we informed him m we were playing golf as we were at a golf course and it was 220 in the afternoon he did not appreciate this and said he was about to go home (the weather report showed that rain would stop around 330 so I knew we’d have a nice round - this is why I called the pro shop ahead of time as the course we normally played had closed for the day earlier.
In the pro shop I pay and the gentleman at the counter asks me if I had received instruction from the cart guy. I said I had not. He informs me that there will be no refunds for weather but the course is cart path only - not surprised it’s raining.
We play 9 holes and at the turn I go in to get a drink for dad and I. It’s 4pm remember I can make an 18 hole tee time at 344 on the golf now app. We are told at the turn we only payed for nine and they are removing us from the course by the cart guy. I go to speak to the man at the pro shop as I remember the bull coming out to around 130 (golf now had the prices listed at 65 for 18 holes- and on the phone I was informed 50for 9 and 65 for 18). Obviously I had thought I’d paid for 18. With fresh drinks in hand and it no longer raining with 2 hours of sunlight remaining they kick us off the course because they wanted to go home. They said we had only paid for nine (local rate is 40 for nine holes in the evening) so when I paid 130 bucks I had just assumed it was the 18 rate as I had also seen in golf now I could book times up to 4pm for 18 holes in the app.
They did credit us a nine hole rate but did not allow us to continue. Had they not wanted golfers they should have not let us out on the course. It was obvious that the cart guy was pushing around the shop guy. I appreciate the credit but with several hours of light out and no rain with an open course we would have been done well before sunset. We also made the turn 10 minutes after the last 18 hole tee time the sell on golf now.
TLDR cart guy is an lazy and the lied to go home early. Just own it say you want to go home and are closing the course- I called ahead of time you said you were open and I paid full price- let me play. Signed a new dad playing his first round since having his baby
Good course
Friendly helpful staff. Some greens suffering, otherwise course in good shape. Nice signature par 3 overlooking water
Great course and fair for all levels
Really a great track to play. Highly recommend but bring some extra golf balls.....
We do appreciate you taking some time to share you're experience, we do hope to see you again soon.
Overrated Course
The staff was friendly & range balls were included in the price which is great, but we would not pay the regular rate to play this course. Most tee boxes, fairways & greens were in poor shape. The fairways are not overseeded. I would compare this course equal to a typical muni course. Although they let us drive to our ball, there were several holes on the back 9 that were very wet. There are better courses on HHI that are available to play.
A very nice course
The greens were good speed and condition. I was very happy with all aspects of the course and staff.
Thank you for taking the time to review you're day with us and we do hope to see you again soon.
Terrible condition
Course was in really bad shape. Greens were overgrown and bumpy. Definitely wasn't worth $110 in late January.
course was good tee now not so much
had tee time setup with tee now arrived at the course and they didn't show our tee time but the staff was able to get our threesome out to play witch worked out ok . suggest to check with proshop to make sure your tee time was reserved
Thank you for the review and hope to see you again.
