Robber's Row at Port Royal Golf Club
About
A Pete Dye redesign of a George Cobb and Willard Byrd original design helped take the Robber's Row Course at Port Royal Golf Club toward the head of the pack on Hilton Head. Dye added or redesigned 43 bunkers on the front nine, changing par from 35 to 36 and did some shortening on the back nine to change par from 37 to 36.
The golf course plays little more than 6,000 yards, with a somewhat-friendly 124 slope rating from the tips. Players will have to do some work on their approach shots, as the Cobb/Dye design keeps its greens well protected with bunkers.
The golf course is a scenic delight, however, and in a nice move, you get history lessons at the tee boxes to help let you know the past of the area you are playing, which was once an important location in the Civil War.

Great course
Everything was great except the tee boxes may need some improvements.
“Known Computer Glitch”
Was not allowed to play Robbers Row despite a written e-mail confirmation from the reservation I made a month earlier through GolfNow. I planned my vacation courses carefully with Robbers Row as one of 5 different courses I wanted to play. Imagine my disappointment, as when I presented my receipt to the starter that I would have to play the sister course and not Robbers because Robbers was only open to Members. I had played the sister course 3 days prior. I went to Pro shop to challenge, I was told “computer glitch, sorry”. Subsequent phone call to Heritage Golf I learned that they are aware of this problem with your system (that GolfNow makes courses and times available that are not and GolfNow IT has not fixed it). Please correct the problem. I was very upset I was not able to play the course I expected. Bad customer experience. Booking was easy through Golf Now. Had done it 6 times for my trip without issue.
Robbers Row
Was a rainy am so we appeared to be the first out, pace of play was great 3 hr round, with great course conditions. Port Royal is a great surprise to play and will be back…
Great track on vacation
Terrific experience
Twosome at 1130 and had the course to ourselves
Three hours wow had forgotten how much fun never waiting is and played well too
Staff super nice too

Enjoyable august round
Course recovering from aeration from 2-3 weeks prior, so greens a bit sandy/bumpy, but still rolled well. From 9 was redesigned by Dye a number of years ago and shows his personal touch. The back nine is a tad more mundane. Overall and enjoyable round and would enjoy playing this one again at a different time of year. Staff very friendly and cordial as well.
Played during 90 + heat, dead of summer. Totally understand course may not be in the best shape but the entire front 9 was terrible. Fairways burned out, greens all super soft, some areas of fairway covered in sand. Back 9 was much better save for 2 holes with terrible layouts. Not worth it for the price. If greens fee was 60-70 percent or the rate I pairs would be much more reasonable for the course. Definitely didn’t get what I paid for
Serious Rain
We play at Port Royal annually but unfortunately the weather did not cooperate. But even after a 1 hr torrential ran, it was amazing how well the course cleared of standing water. There were only a couple of holes after about 30 minutes that you had to stay on the path. Kudos to the golf course staff for their preparation on the course. We'll be back!
Hacker friendly course.
After playing so many hilly courses back home recently, this flat layout was a welcome relief. Sand bunkers offer a little challenge but can be easily avoided with decent approach shots. The greens had been recently aerated and still were pretty sandy. They still rolled pretty good considering. All in all, a very fun course for an average scoring golfer.
Decent Course but slow play was a problem.
Clubhouse and course staff were very friendly and helpful. Played mid-day on a Tuesday. We saw a course ranger twice on the front nine who appeared to be keeping groups moving at a good pace. When, we got to the back nine we never saw him again and the pace was painfully slow. Our group and the group in front of us were constantly waiting on a foursome who were not very good and played painfully slow. By the time we got to the 15th hole, both the group right in front of us and the group behind us left the course, said they were tired of waiting. They had 3 groups backed up at the 18th hole. The ranger needs to be covering the entire course to keep slow players moving.
Bad timing but fun
Unfortunately we picked a time to play just after greens and fairways were worked on.
Very Accommodating Staff
Generally a nice layout with options for all skill levels. We had an 8:20 tee time and the pace of play was 10 minutes behind schedule before we even started and it was slow for the first 6-7 holes then it opened up. Overall round was 4 hours 40 minutes. The last hole was an odd par 5 finishing hole. 90 degree dog leg right with - majority of the length after the dog leg. Greens were a little rough possibly due to aeration but the aeration holes were the size of dimes….much bigger than I am used to seeing and making it difficult to roll the ball and keep it on line.
Really enjoyed the round
Really enjoy this course. There’s enough to challenge all levels of golfers but it’s a fair test.
My only wish is for more concessions options. No real fast grab & go food options and the drink cart can only come around so many times.
Thank you for your rating and review. We're glad you enjoyed your experience at Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club. Hope to see you again soon,
