The staff at Port Royal Robber's Row consistently earn high praise for their welcoming and attentive service throughout the round. The course layout rewards strategic play with generous fairways that still offer meaningful challenges on every hole.

About

Holes 18
Type Resort
Par 72
Length 6657 yards
Slope 134
Rating 73.3

A Pete Dye redesign of a George Cobb and Willard Byrd original design helped take the Robber's Row Course at Port Royal Golf Club toward the head of the pack on Hilton Head. Dye added or redesigned 43 bunkers on the front nine, changing par from 35 to 36 and did some shortening on the back nine to change par from 37 to 36.

The golf course plays little more than 6,000 yards, with a somewhat-friendly 124 slope rating from the tips. Players will have to do some work on their approach shots, as the Cobb/Dye design keeps its greens well protected with bunkers.

The golf course is a scenic delight, however, and in a nice move, you get history lessons at the tee boxes to help let you know the past of the area you are playing, which was once an important location in the Civil War.

Great experience.

Had heard recent complaints about conditions of some courses on the Island so was pleasantly surprised to see this one in such good shape. Greens were excellent and staff very welcoming for first time visitors. May not have played too well but certainly can’t blame the course. Will definitely return.

Less than thrilled- won't be back

I had last played this course about 10 years ago and had fond memories of it from that time. Unfortunately the course maintenance was only so-so as many of the tee boxes were uneven and rough. Sand traps were hard-packed and soaked. Our biggest issue was with club rental. We were given a set of older clubs and one in our party had the head snap off of a long iron on his second swing at the range. The club had rust at the shaft/ clubhead juncture. We returned the broken club immediatley thereafter and were told that they were in the process of updating their rental clubs and we were given a replacement. Upon cheking out we were charged a re-shafting fee for the broken club even though there was no abuse on our part (they referenced the fine print of the club rental contract) and told us that we had no way of proving our claim of no-abuse. Apparantly they have found a way to charge their customers for upgrading their rental inventory! I was truly dissappointed. definately not worth the money, definitely won't return.

Dry turf …

Need more irrigation I believe. Very dry turf conditions. We played a nearby course two days later and it was lush and nicely matted from tees to greens. Somethings not right.

Nice track.

We enjoyed Robber's Row. Nice layout with good challenges. Overall course conditions were good, but not as good as other courses in the area. Not a problem, just compared to others (albeit at higher prices) not as good. I would rate course conditions as a 7.5/10.

Pick another course

Slow golf groups, poor condition, they bunch you up on the 1st tee, no ranger to speed slow golfers.

Overpriced and in POOR condition

Played an afternoon round while visiting

Hilton Head with my wife. What a waste of time. First of all, the starter seemed confused as to what was going on, asked us twice to check in. He didn't want to give us an extra scorecard until it was our time to play. The course was in poor condition. Fairways were very thin with many of bare spots, hard to get a decent lie. Greens were in good condition; tee boxes were rough. It seemed like the rough was in a dormant stage. The electric cart we got was in poor condition, at times we wondered if we would make it in. Pace on play was terrible, 2:45 for the front nine. The ranger kept coming by saying the slow group was a couple of holes ahead and he had asked them to speed up, then he said the slow group was only plying nine holes and that the back nine was wide open. The slow group didn't stop at nine as the course doesn't go back to the clubhouse after 9. The back nine was just as slow. We ended up skipping by 5 holes to get by slow groups and were able to play 17 and 18. We were looking at a 5 1/2 hour round if we stayed in place. We played 3 other courses on the island, all were in great condition so we were very disappointed in Robbers Row. I can't see how it rates a 4.2.
