Robber's Row at Port Royal Golf Club
About
A Pete Dye redesign of a George Cobb and Willard Byrd original design helped take the Robber's Row Course at Port Royal Golf Club toward the head of the pack on Hilton Head. Dye added or redesigned 43 bunkers on the front nine, changing par from 35 to 36 and did some shortening on the back nine to change par from 37 to 36.
The golf course plays little more than 6,000 yards, with a somewhat-friendly 124 slope rating from the tips. Players will have to do some work on their approach shots, as the Cobb/Dye design keeps its greens well protected with bunkers.
The golf course is a scenic delight, however, and in a nice move, you get history lessons at the tee boxes to help let you know the past of the area you are playing, which was once an important location in the Civil War.

Great round
Course was in very good condition. Enjoyable well paced round
Overpriced and in POOR condition
Played an afternoon round while visiting
Hilton Head with my wife. What a waste of time. First of all, the starter seemed confused as to what was going on, asked us twice to check in. He didn't want to give us an extra scorecard until it was our time to play. The course was in poor condition. Fairways were very thin with many of bare spots, hard to get a decent lie. Greens were in good condition; tee boxes were rough. It seemed like the rough was in a dormant stage. The electric cart we got was in poor condition, at times we wondered if we would make it in. Pace on play was terrible, 2:45 for the front nine. The ranger kept coming by saying the slow group was a couple of holes ahead and he had asked them to speed up, then he said the slow group was only plying nine holes and that the back nine was wide open. The slow group didn't stop at nine as the course doesn't go back to the clubhouse after 9. The back nine was just as slow. We ended up skipping by 5 holes to get by slow groups and were able to play 17 and 18. We were looking at a 5 1/2 hour round if we stayed in place. We played 3 other courses on the island, all were in great condition so we were very disappointed in Robbers Row. I can't see how it rates a 4.2.
Definite Port of Call
Be sure to add Port Royal to your golf destinations in Hilton Head. Fun courses with beautiful scenery including some alligators. 36 holes to chose from.

Good course, use GolfNow for lower rates
A great day, course conditions were pretty good despite it being a windy day. Use GolfNow for lower rates, I was able to get a round for $90 despite the regular fee being $160. Course not worth $160 USD, although a fun layout and challenging approach shots.
First time on the Course
We were looking for a course with good value, RR at Port Royal fit the bill. Staff was friendly and accommodating. We were a threesome and teed off at 12:52, and the round felt slow, (behind twosome and a couple 4somes in front of them) but finished 9 in 2:15 and 18 in 4:15. Fairways were a little rough, but the greens were the very good, very true, and a offered a good roll. White tees plated short, and is not friendly to hookers. I’d go back and move to the blue tees.

Pete Dye design.
Not overly long but classic Pete Dye design. You know where you’re supposed to hit it and if you don’t hit it there you’re in trouble.
