Robber's Row at Port Royal Golf Club
About
A Pete Dye redesign of a George Cobb and Willard Byrd original design helped take the Robber's Row Course at Port Royal Golf Club toward the head of the pack on Hilton Head. Dye added or redesigned 43 bunkers on the front nine, changing par from 35 to 36 and did some shortening on the back nine to change par from 37 to 36.
The golf course plays little more than 6,000 yards, with a somewhat-friendly 124 slope rating from the tips. Players will have to do some work on their approach shots, as the Cobb/Dye design keeps its greens well protected with bunkers.
The golf course is a scenic delight, however, and in a nice move, you get history lessons at the tee boxes to help let you know the past of the area you are playing, which was once an important location in the Civil War.

Hacker friendly course.
After playing so many hilly courses back home recently, this flat layout was a welcome relief. Sand bunkers offer a little challenge but can be easily avoided with decent approach shots. The greens had been recently aerated and still were pretty sandy. They still rolled pretty good considering. All in all, a very fun course for an average scoring golfer.
Decent Course but slow play was a problem.
Clubhouse and course staff were very friendly and helpful. Played mid-day on a Tuesday. We saw a course ranger twice on the front nine who appeared to be keeping groups moving at a good pace. When, we got to the back nine we never saw him again and the pace was painfully slow. Our group and the group in front of us were constantly waiting on a foursome who were not very good and played painfully slow. By the time we got to the 15th hole, both the group right in front of us and the group behind us left the course, said they were tired of waiting. They had 3 groups backed up at the 18th hole. The ranger needs to be covering the entire course to keep slow players moving.
Bad timing but fun
Unfortunately we picked a time to play just after greens and fairways were worked on.
Very Accommodating Staff
Generally a nice layout with options for all skill levels. We had an 8:20 tee time and the pace of play was 10 minutes behind schedule before we even started and it was slow for the first 6-7 holes then it opened up. Overall round was 4 hours 40 minutes. The last hole was an odd par 5 finishing hole. 90 degree dog leg right with - majority of the length after the dog leg. Greens were a little rough possibly due to aeration but the aeration holes were the size of dimes….much bigger than I am used to seeing and making it difficult to roll the ball and keep it on line.
Really enjoyed the round
Really enjoy this course. There’s enough to challenge all levels of golfers but it’s a fair test.
My only wish is for more concessions options. No real fast grab & go food options and the drink cart can only come around so many times.
Good Course
Layout of course was pretty good. Had a few challenging holes which made it fun to test your skill level. Pace of Play was fast and had rangers out there to make sure things kept moving.

Robbers Row Review
Course was okay except greens were just aerated and sanded so putting was difficult to get a true line.
u7658980,

This was my first time playing this course. Didn’t know what to expect. Read some not so good reviews. Loved the course. I would play again. I played in the afternoon. Finished in 3.5 hrs. Course was in good shape. A couple of the tee boxes could have been in better shape. There were a lot of doglegs and the par 3’s had water around the holes. Fun to play

Good track. Needs some TLC
A big company owns Port Royal and they put big money into the buildings after a hurricane. They need to put some money into the course. Tee boxes are poor. Water is smelly, dark green and stagnant. Most fairways are reasonably Ok. Greens are mostly good. Green surrounds are strange. Most courses cut so you can putt. Here the fairways are short cut and the immediate surrounds are longer. So if 5 yards short of the green you putt from short grass over longer grass onto the green. Basically the better alternative is chipping. A tougher shot for anyone over a 10 handicap. Cart paths a full of root heaves. The course is attractive but conditions detract from the experience.
mtaxter,
Thank you for your feedback and review. We're glad you had a good experience while playing Port Royal. To your point, Heritage Golf Group does own Port Royal and we are making capital improvements year over year. We hope you have an opportunity to play again in the future to see our improvements. Thanks again!
