Robber's Row at Port Royal Golf Club
About
A Pete Dye redesign of a George Cobb and Willard Byrd original design helped take the Robber's Row Course at Port Royal Golf Club toward the head of the pack on Hilton Head. Dye added or redesigned 43 bunkers on the front nine, changing par from 35 to 36 and did some shortening on the back nine to change par from 37 to 36.
The golf course plays little more than 6,000 yards, with a somewhat-friendly 124 slope rating from the tips. Players will have to do some work on their approach shots, as the Cobb/Dye design keeps its greens well protected with bunkers.
The golf course is a scenic delight, however, and in a nice move, you get history lessons at the tee boxes to help let you know the past of the area you are playing, which was once an important location in the Civil War.

Good track. Needs some TLC
A big company owns Port Royal and they put big money into the buildings after a hurricane. They need to put some money into the course. Tee boxes are poor. Water is smelly, dark green and stagnant. Most fairways are reasonably Ok. Greens are mostly good. Green surrounds are strange. Most courses cut so you can putt. Here the fairways are short cut and the immediate surrounds are longer. So if 5 yards short of the green you putt from short grass over longer grass onto the green. Basically the better alternative is chipping. A tougher shot for anyone over a 10 handicap. Cart paths a full of root heaves. The course is attractive but conditions detract from the experience.
Disappointed
Conditions were well below expectations. Pace of play was terrible

Good course
not very difficult course to play. Fairways in good condition and greens(couple with imperfections but rolled good) . Tee boxes could be mowed better. Staff all good.

Greens were good… Fairways were reasonable… Tee boxes need a good bit of work.
Joe Irish,
Thank you for your review and rating. WE're glad to hear you had a good experience while visiting Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club. To your point, some of our teeing areas are thin due to shade and tree root competition. That said, we are going to re-sod some areas and limb some trees to promote more sunlight. Hope to see you again after our improvements.

Course review
The course was in terrible shape. Tee boxes were bad as well as the greens and fairways. No rough whatsoever. Way overpriced for the course conditions. Would chose to golf elsewhere next time.
u4874073,
Thank you for you review and rating. Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your round at Port Royal. Our Bermuda grass growing season was off to a slow start but I'm happy to say it's growing very well now. I recommend playing in the afternoon when we offer specials rates if the morning prices are higher than you'd like to pay.

Not a great value given the overall experience
Played with my dad while on vacation, both the check-in employee and the starter were none too friendly, acted like we were inconveniencing them. Starter was terrible at keeping the pace, advised us they were 40 minutes behind schedule and then acted annoyed when I asked for a few extra range balls since we had time to kill. Great greens, but the condition otherwise was lousy; lots of burnt out patches and ground under repair. Definitely wouldn’t play again.
u000008023278,
Thank you for your review and rating. Sorry to hear you had an average experience and your interactions with our team were not positive. That said, we have been very dry and that's why we had "hot spots" or brown areas due to the drought conditions. On a positive note, we have had some rain lately and our grass is getting greener every day. Hope you and your father enjoyed your vacation.

Save Your Money
Overpriced, Too Crowded, Course was boring and nothing special. Staff in the restaurant were an absolute joke, 1 cart girl on 2 courses that was always out of everything when we finally saw her. Honestly I have played public golf courses that were more fun and challenging. Absolute rip off for the money.

Rough Conditions
Fairways not impressive, rough and unwatered, Golden Bear is a much better deal and course for a better price...
3DDesign,
Thank you for your rating and review. Sorry you only had a fair experience while playing Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club. Our courses have been dry due to drought conditions. That said, we have received some rain and our roughs and fairways are looking very good. Hope you're able to come back during the summer growing season.

Good, nice people, conditions good not great.
People were outstanding, rental clubs were excellent, brand new Calloway’s! Driving range was closed, not sure why.. Conditions were good, but not great.

First round at Robbers
Enjoyed the layout - lots of nature - really enjoyed playing. We teed off around 4:00 was disappointed sprinklers came on for a few holes on the back nine - I think the course could better manage.
Fun course
Had a great round , we played another couple as a scramble. Some of the tees were not in good spots because of tree limbs , forcing you to hit a shot that was not reasonable. We are not pros. ..!
Be aware , course goes out at 1 tee and does not come back to clubhouse until 18. The cart girl has to work 2 courses , we called in to have her meet us .. she had beer but little food . There should be a cart girl on each 18 hole course. Or they need a Halfway house so you can grab something mid way through round . Much needed in the heat .
tintdog,

Highly Recommend
I booked a last minute reservation to play - what an extremely enjoyable course. I will definitely play again. I even got to see an alligator swim across a pond during a rain sprinkle.

Robber's
Really enjoyed the course. It was fair. Didn't lose a bunch of balls as was the case at Arthur's Hill
