Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
While Hilton Head is chock full of courses designed by some of the greatest names in golf, just one of them was designed with a computer to give it lines straighter than an arrow throughout.
The Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall can be one of the most interesting and eclectic courses you'll play, as well as possibly one of the toughest. From the back tees the course plays to 7,079, with a slope rating of 144.
Named as Golf World's top designer in 1992, Cupp created a course that is visually challenging as well as challenging to play. With sand traps looking as if they were drawn in by, well, a computer, this is a course you'll tell your friends about, though you may not tell them your score.

Arthur Hills course in great shape
Just want to start by saying the staff was very good at Palmetto Hall. I requested to switch from the Robert Cupp course to the Arthur Hills course. Staff recommended I see the starter and he made some adjustments and let our group off on the Hills course. Pace of play was a little slow but happy we played the Hills. Greens were very tough today due to the position of the pins. Truthfully they were in the toughest positions I have ever played here. Some might say they were illegally placed as there were several holes where the pin was positioned on a hill. Depending on the direction of your putt, if you were short on a up hill putt it would roll all the way back to you or further. If you were slightly long on a down hill putt, well you could face a 30-40 foot up hill putt. All members in my group had multiple 3-putts and even a couple of 4 putts. All in all, although very challenging on the greens, the day was a good day to golf. Just over 4-1/2 hours to complete.
Driver needed...
Long hitters will like this set-up... One hole had a rolling church pew fairway and one a square green ~ course design aspects that livened up the round. Didn't score well but not the courses fault!
Great course for the value
This course is challenging but not too challenging, good for the average golfer. There are some areas of the cart path that are unfinished but other than that it is a really nice course.
Was shocked many of the greens were lost, played there around Christmas and they were great - everything else was great but check the status of the greens before playing- it will take time to get them back
A little disappointed with greens
Typically this is a top rated course to play. Not too sure what happpened, but a few of the greens were damaged. It’s too bad, because this is always a favourite in the Hilton Head area. We also got stuck behind a group of elderly couples, who slowed the pace of play to a crawl by our 4th hole. Decided to skip the par 3 8th hole and the game moved along well after that. That front 9 took almost 3 full hours and we skipped a hole. The back 9 was played in just under 2. Wish there was a Marshall out there. Unfortunately when we ended the Pro Shop was closed as it was around 5:30-5:45, so I couldn’t let them know. All in all, I would come back to play here as the layout and staff are excellent.
Layout
We really like the layout. It was very pretty and the course was quite challenging
Great day of golf
Enjoyable day at Palmetto Hall Cupp course. Course was in great shape for this time of year - especially the greens. It was one of those days when we had no one in front of us and the group behinds us we rarely saw.
Good value
The course was in good condition for this time of year. Lots of water, and some long carries over water.
Greens had been sanded and some not in great shape.
I 'll be back...
Wow!... What a great course! Visually, the course is stunning and the layout is quite challanging. We were a group of kids handicappers and played from the white tees.... Glad that we did, because it allowed us to enjoy the round, but still be challenged as golfers!
This was our 3rd course in 3 days and was the BEST of the lot (Shipyard came in 2nd and Indigo Run was last due to fairway quality). This was the most expensive of the 3, but still fairly priced.
I will look forward to playing again in the future!
First Time on A Cupp Course
It was my first time on the Plantation Hall Robt. Cupp course. I was pleasantly surprised with the layout and condition of the course. Being the second group off, the pace was very good. I'm sure later it would be slower. The overall course condition was very good. The design of the course, and the difficulty was perfect for an intermediate experienced golfer. I would recommend this course to other golfers.
Good day of golf
Course was in good condition. Greens are being worked on, a little inconsistent right now.
Beautiful and fast paced day of golf
Staff friendly and attentive to my group. Suggested I play Arthur Hills instead of Roberts Cupp, since I had my wife and grandson with me. Less carry holes on Arthur Hills. Turned out to be a great decision. Pace was unbelievably good. We played in 3 hrs 15 min as a threesome. Course in great shape, although these traps had pebbles in with the sand so it was a little tougher hitting out of. Overall we loved it and my grandson who is 11 played well and shot 113. He played the forward tees with my wife, while I played the back tees. Set up nice for low or high handicappers. Definitely a good choice if looking to play on the island at a reasonable rate.
Wet
Course is a good lay out. However weather had been wet and cold. Yet the greens and fairways left something to be desired. I cannot say If was staff or weather. Should have been more yardage markers. It was cart path only when I played, unfortunately the cart path is the roughest part on the course. Club house is very very nice and food and service was excellent.
