Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
While Hilton Head is chock full of courses designed by some of the greatest names in golf, just one of them was designed with a computer to give it lines straighter than an arrow throughout.
The Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall can be one of the most interesting and eclectic courses you'll play, as well as possibly one of the toughest. From the back tees the course plays to 7,079, with a slope rating of 144.
Named as Golf World's top designer in 1992, Cupp created a course that is visually challenging as well as challenging to play. With sand traps looking as if they were drawn in by, well, a computer, this is a course you'll tell your friends about, though you may not tell them your score.

Cupp course
Great layout, conditions worse than I have previously experienced -dry, patchy tees, greens not cut. May be some kinks need to be worked out with new course management(Brown group). It would be a shame if they don't keep up this nice layout.
Great course.
This was early spring golf for me so the Bermuda was still dormant and it didn't seem to be greatly over seeded. But that's just part of playing this time of year. I like the course layout and the pace of play was good. It is a good mix of challenging holes in easy but interesting holes. I would definitely play here again
Palmetto Hall - my favorite courses
I have played many courses on Hilton Head, but with the obvious exception of Harbour Town, i love both courses at Palmetto Hall - Cupp is my favorite but Hills is a close second. Layout is spectacular and challenging. Staff are friendly, so definitely enjoyable. I also paid 50% of the fees to play Sea Pines Atlantic Dunes the day before and frankly I think they have the rates mixed up. That said, I heard rumors that the group that has taken over the Palmetto Hall typically "run their courses very cheap" and course condition suffers, however, at this early stage, no complaints - greens were spectacular and recovered well from last year. the range is poor quality and I wonder if that is an indication of how the course condition may evolve. I hope not as phenomenal courses and a destination I choose every time of come to the island (3-4 times a year).
Bad service
They were backed up due to some early morning freeze. However was optimistic to play the course. Friendly in pro shop. We called to place an order on #8 and was told to not worry it would be ready when we made the turn. My girlfriend went in and said the staff were not only rude but didn't even seem interested and they were just sitting around eating food. Course is decent but they need to water. Wouldn't recommend to someone I liked.
An Arthur Hill design is literally a "hill" design.
Good routing and variety, which makes for a good experience. These greens have the Hill signature (lots of slope) 18 times. Its a difficult, but fair test.
Great condition for time of year
Course looked beautiful for what time of year it was. Greens and fairways in great shape. Staff was very helpful when they had to delay tee times due to frost. Would love to come back in the summer to see everything again.
COLD DAY
TEMPERATURE IN THE LOW 50 WITH WIND. NOT A GOOD DAY FOR GOLF, BUT THE STAFF, BAG MEN AT THE DROP OFF AND STARTER DISPLAYED A VERY FROSTY ATTITUDE. THEY DID NOT WANT TO BE THERE AND THEIR ATTITUDE CERTAINLY REFLECTED THAT TOWARDS US. WE DIDN'T WANT TO PLAY IN THE COLD EITHER, BUT CAME TO HILTON HEAD FROM DENVER FOR GOLF AND SET THE TEE TIMES IN ADVANCE. WISH THE STAFF COULD HAVE PROVIDED A LITTLE WARMTH & FRIENDLINESS.
COURSE WAS IN GOOD SHAPE FOR THE SEASON AND WE HAD A GOOD ROUND, PACE OF PLAY WAS GOOD,BUT THE COURSE WAS NOT FULL.
BURRR
Required precise shots in the wind and cold but is was sunny!
Challenging greens
Position 1 hole placemeets make the greens very challenging. Fun course as every hole gives you something to think about regarding shot placement.
course design impacts experience
I am a fan of Bob Cupp designs. However, this one was the exception. The geometric experiment failed. I would not want to the superintendent as sharp angles make it difficult to grow grass. Water hazards in front of greens make it very challenging for most golfer. Staff were friendly and helpful.
Greens Fast and True
Enjoyed my day came out as a single and paired with another single and played in just under 3 hrs. We had the course to ourselves on a prefect day.
The pins selection for the course that day was #3.The greens roles true and fast. The course was a joy to play.
Playing the Arthur Hill sister course on Friday can't wait. Going to be there a little early to take advantage of the range prior to the round.
Nice Course
Nice t my first time here nor will it be my last. For February the course was in great shape. Greens rolled true. Will be back.
A pleasant Course
played round in four hours with normal pace of play. Fivesome ahead kept pace of play good. Greens in good shape with average fairways. Some very interesting holes on course.
