Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
While Hilton Head is chock full of courses designed by some of the greatest names in golf, just one of them was designed with a computer to give it lines straighter than an arrow throughout.
The Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall can be one of the most interesting and eclectic courses you'll play, as well as possibly one of the toughest. From the back tees the course plays to 7,079, with a slope rating of 144.
Named as Golf World's top designer in 1992, Cupp created a course that is visually challenging as well as challenging to play. With sand traps looking as if they were drawn in by, well, a computer, this is a course you'll tell your friends about, though you may not tell them your score.

Great value
70 years old. Course accommodates all skill levels. The fairways and greens were is great shape. Well play again
Challenging
This course is a bit of a challenge for the average golfer. There is plenty of sand and water. The fairways are deceptively narrow because there are man made hills on every hole. So even if you stay out of the trees you may have a very awkward lie. The greens were nicely manicured but the tee boxes were a little shabby. Overall, nice course for the price.
Thank you for spending your day with us. We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your round on the Cupp Course. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and will be passed on to help continue improving our courses. We look forward to having you back with us in the future!
Interesting holes, True rolling greens
This course was a nice balance of challenge and fairness with a great range of holes, with a variety of hole lengths. I played the whites and my wife played the front tees. It was a fun course for both of us. We were able to go out as a twosome and sailed through the course in 3 hours including waiting on the last 4 holes for a foursome that we caught up to...
Thank you for joining us for your round. We are always happy to hear you all enjoyed the course. We look forward to having you with us again soon!
Course Conditions
After playing and reading some of the other reviews, frankly I don't know what some of them are talking about. The course played excellent. Greens were in great shape, quick and smooth. Maybe not PGA glass top fast but certainly not slow, and with the slopes that's probably a good thing! The fairways were a touch dry and on the browning side. Granted I know they have not had much rain in the past few months. I spoke with the golf staff in the shop and they explained that they had been doing some extensive work on their irrigation to improve what was a bit out-dated. And you could tell, some fairways were greener than others but all in all no conditions that would hinder a round. And the extra roll off the tee never hurt anyone! I highly recommend checking the courses out for yourself!
Too bad they forgot to water
Great lay- out....terrible shape...almost like they have run out of money...not worth the drive in current conditions...sad how they let this great rack crumble
We appreciate your playing with us and understand your concern. As we continue to work through an ongoing "revamping" of our irrigation system and a few unusually dry seasonal conditions we hope that you will join us again in the future as we are only improving. We look forward to having you back to see what Palmetto Hall truly has to offer!
Great course good layout but the staff was as bad as it gets!!
We were playing the course for the first time. I'm not sure if the staff thought we were regulars but nobody guided us, the logistics of the facility is confusing since there more than one course. once we finally got a cart and was headed to the right course we realized we had no score cards. So we asked the outside staffer for a score card, he was leaning against a wall with one foot o n the wall, he came to us let us know he had no score cards and that we can play without any and went back to leaning on the wall.I was a little shocked because I thought he may have made a little effort towards resolving our issue. once i saw he really wasn't going help us i asked again, he approached us and said "you might be able to get one in the pro shop". we went back to the golf shop to get score cards. they said the shipment didn't come in so we ended up with paper copies of a score card. I get it stuff happens sometimes but level unprofessionalism displayed at that facilty I would expect from goat ranch! not a Palmetto dunes facilty.
Excellent value
Enjoyed the service, course was excellent, conditions were good.
Good layout, slow greens
The Robert Cupp course was originally designed with angled corners. Meaning, tees, fairways, bunkers and greens were square or rectangular. That has changed over the years, but there are some remaining examples. The course was wide open when I played (few people there). I joined up with 2 other Golfnow players. It had rained the day before but, as with other beach courses, it drained very well. The course design and playability is good, but the greens were so slow it made the experience lass than pleasant. I don't understand it. They are bermuda greens, in April! Why can't they cut the grass shorter. Anyway, the greens are in good condition, except for the speed. Come on, Brown Golf, you can do better.
We appreciate your playing with us and your feedback. You are correct in saying the greens are not quite as fast as we would like just yet but be assured they are well on their way! As the warm weather evenings are becoming consistent enough for our green to come out of their dormant state we can begin the process of firming, shortening, and grooming the greens to a faster speed while maintaining overall good health. As you can imagine this is not an overnight process. While mowing them a bit tighter would get us there quickly it can damage the greens and cause issues in weeks to follow. We want to make sure our greens are in good condition for the season.
We hope you will come back and see us over the next couple of weeks as we are only getting better everyday!
Great course
Enjoyed the course, challenging but not impossible.
Thank you for spending your day with us! We appreciate your feedback and hope to have you join us again soon.
Great value
The Robert cupp course is a great value. The course was fun and challenging but not too tough. I'm a double digit handicap and really enjoyed this course. Cart path is well marked and impossible to get lost.
Thank for playing with us. We're very happy to hear you enjoyed your round! We hope you will join us again in the future!
One of the best in HH
I played four courses this year in HH and this one was great. Very fun and beautiful. The pro shop was terrific. I played a total of five times this year and the Cupp course was the one I played twice. I recommend it.
Very slow pace today
Too slow. Greens were a bit severe, slop,, tricked up. We're slow as well. Condition not bad. The Hills course was much better.
The course was an average shape. Apparently they could not seed it because of the hurricane. Overall layout of the course is nice. Reasonably challenging. Staff friendliness and welcoming left something to be desired. Pace on the front nine was good but horrible on the back nine. We left without finishing 18
Thank you for your kind words and feedback. We are always happy to hear when our customers enjoy their days with us. Come back and see us soon!
