Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
While Hilton Head is chock full of courses designed by some of the greatest names in golf, just one of them was designed with a computer to give it lines straighter than an arrow throughout.
The Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall can be one of the most interesting and eclectic courses you'll play, as well as possibly one of the toughest. From the back tees the course plays to 7,079, with a slope rating of 144.
Named as Golf World's top designer in 1992, Cupp created a course that is visually challenging as well as challenging to play. With sand traps looking as if they were drawn in by, well, a computer, this is a course you'll tell your friends about, though you may not tell them your score.

Tough greens
This is a really challenging course. Areas around the greens are well protected by water and sand. But once you get on the greens the challenge really begins. Not a flat surface on any of them!
Disappointing experience
Scene set at bagdrop with indifferent welcome. No one present to unload cart at end.No golf card or pencil provided and the starter seemed thoroughly bored with proceedings. No layout shown of any hole at respective tee so shooting blind as it was first visit. No beverage cart although in fairness only 50% of our courses have used one.Contrast to all twelve other courses we have played to date this month on HHI and surrounds, where comparable courses were all more organized and welcoming. We felt the whiff of real budgetary constraints.
Nice facility
Was sent out alone; which was ok; course was empty. Nice layout, but would recommend bringing a GPS or rangefinder. The greens were very furry, which appears to be a common theme on these reviews. I paired up with a member on the back and he told me there's a new owner; hopefully a little investment in the greens in terms of maintenance and sand traps and areas around the greens. Played in a little over 3 hours which was great!
Good time
Had played this once before while in Hilton Head, really like the play there. Will play again if I go to Hilton Head.
Rough tee boxes
I played this course with a buddy as part of an unlimited golf package that included multiple courses. The first thing we noticed when we arrived was that the starter seemed to have no idea what was going on. They had some kind of member choose-up starting on the front that morning (it was a Monday) and therefore the starter told us to start on the back nine. The way he told us to get there would've required us to get hit into by the group on the first tee so one of the members told us to go a different way. When we got to the 10th tee, there was a twelve-some about to tee off full of children and what appeared to be a bunch of 30+ handicappers. Thankfully they let us go in front of them or we would've been in for a long day. Unfortunately the grass on the tee box was over an inch and a half long which made even teeing up the ball challenging. We hoped that the tee box conditions would improve however they got worse as we went on. Since we were able to play another course that day we didn't feel the need to play any more holes than we wanted to so we stopped after 6 holes and let the pro shop staff know about our concerns. We were told politely that since we went off the back nine, maintenance would not have been able to mow the grass so it was still unmowed from yesterday. I highly doubt that grass would grow over an inch in 24 hours and I find it odd that the staff would start play on holes that hadn't been mowed yet since they clearly needed it. It was also strange that the tee boxes were so long due to the fact that the rest of the course was well manicured and the greens were fast and rolled true. We were also told that the group of twelve was from TPC Tampa Bay and had a tee time 45 minutes before we got there, so it seems like there was a mix up. Tee boxes were definitely not what I would expect from a course that charges $70 for a tee time.
Challenging course.
First time playing this course so I found it somewhat challenging especially the greens. They did not hold well so a lot of long buts until I started hitting way short of Pin. Grass had not been mowed recently or is not cut as short as other courses. Real rough around the greens and the tee box. Only real issue I had was the bunkers, sand was not right not sure how to explain, not loose sand kind of packed and very wet. Greens were tough as far as breaks and pin positions. Overall a nice course I will play again.
Hot but good afternoon deal
So noon golf in middle of July is hot. No one on the course but was nice to work on the game. Course played fair although some holes are tight and long considering the climate plays one club longer than you think due to the humity and wind. Greens roll slow but for the climate seem normal since I usually play bent greens in the north. Overall challenging layout with some nice holes. I would play it again
Not worth the time or money
The course is in very bad shape
Must play!
The Cupp course at Palmetto Hall is must play for those who have the opportunity. We played from the blues and probably should have played from the whites, some par fours were well over 400 yards. But we played there twice that week and played both times from the blues. Thank you to Golf. Now for making this one of their available courses since the price was a lot lower that what you would pay booking your tee time through the club.
Enjoyable course to play
Pace of play was slow due to a very slow foursome in front and no Marshall to speed them up.
No beverage cart for the entire 18 holes.
Love the course and the condition was good for early April.
