Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall Plantation
About
While Hilton Head is chock full of courses designed by some of the greatest names in golf, just one of them was designed with a computer to give it lines straighter than an arrow throughout.
The Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall can be one of the most interesting and eclectic courses you'll play, as well as possibly one of the toughest. From the back tees the course plays to 7,079, with a slope rating of 144.
Named as Golf World's top designer in 1992, Cupp created a course that is visually challenging as well as challenging to play. With sand traps looking as if they were drawn in by, well, a computer, this is a course you'll tell your friends about, though you may not tell them your score.

forgiving fairways, best greens on the island. Undulating from back to front, and fast on the stimpmeter. Miss on the wrong side of the pin and you're in for a ride. Water can come into play on most of the holes and sand traps are in excellent condition. I've played most of the island courses and this is now my go to course. Can't beat the price.
Beautiful and well maintained. Sadly it was cart path only due to earlier storms. this is not a layout you want to play on a cart path only day. the paths are too far from the fairways.
Challenge Layout
We really enjoyed this technically challenging course which was in great shape. Very visually appealing The only negative is that the the clubhouse closes at 4:00 pm so no 19th hole social, drink or snack.
Good course for the price
Course was pretty tough for my group of semi-beginner golfers that all shoot around 100. Lots of fun holes with great views but overall not the hardest course i’ve played by any means. Be mindful when you choose what tees your playing because the further tees are very strategically placed. Overall great course for the 75$ i got to play it for!
Practice area closed on Thursdays
Course overall was fine. The entire practice area was closed except for the putting green next to the starter. We were told it was closed for maintenance, but there were no maintenance staff on the range.
Good surprise
First round of Golf in Hilton head
Top conditions venue
Friendly and knowledgeable staff
Highly recommended
The course was beat up and not marked well. There was a sign after the number 9 hole pointing towards the clubhouse when the number 10 tee is around the corner from the number nine green. No one in sight near the clubhouse to ask. Also no pictures of each hole to see the layout or any water hazards. Not worth the money.
The signage
Going from the 9th hole to the 10th was challenging. The sign isn’t in a good place for anyone that is unfamiliar with the course. There should be a larger sign indicating where the golfer needs to go after 9. Or an explanation on the card. Otherwise a nice course in good condition.
The course is beat up and not well marked . The sign to tee #10 points to the club house and it is around the corner. No one around to ask how to get to number 10 tee. No picture of the corse anywhere to know where water hazards are.

good track; needs gps for guests to have better knowledge of hazards; greens well maintained and fair
Not worth the regular green fee
Thankfully, I was able to book this as a hot deal on GolfNow. From tee boxes to greens the condition of this course does not merit what is routinely charged. The undulation and slope of greens, and extensive mounds in fairways seem contrived and excessive on many holes.
Nice layout
Overall a good experience. Greens in good shape except for one (16?). About 1/3rd of the holes I would consider pretty tight. Lots of water to contend with. Guy in club house was friendly, as were the two people I encountered getting and returning my cart. No beverage cart came by us. Had a 1PM tee time, starter let me go out ahead of the older couple I was paired up with. Wound up pairing up to another guy on hole #4. I played from the blues; he from the combo white/black, nice mix of tee boxes.
Things they can improve...include a pin sheet as some greens are rather large. I recommend purchasing a course book because the carts don't have GPS and the tee boxes don't have a diagram of the hole. Luckily the guy I played with knew the course well.
Overall, OK value. If I had paid full rack rate I would have been disappointed due to the lack of GPS on cart, no course book and no pin sheets.
Couldn’t have had a better experience playing this course. Wouldn’t exactly call this a “beginner friendly” course as there are some challenging approach shots but if you are a 5-10 handicap this course is blast! Fairways, tee boxes, and greens wee all phenomenal. Range and putting green were great shape.
Be sure you get a deal.....
Like all of the Heritage managed courses, prices at Palmetto Hall have increased tremendously. With an afternoon hot deal, it's a little closer to the value you will find.
Bunkers are better and greens were good; fairways dry and predominantly dormant. Many other courses are much greener. Decent driving range and excellent short game area around the corner.
Decent pace late day.
