About
Editor's Note: Course closed and redesigned as Cabot Citrus Farms.
The Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club is one of two championship golf courses at the club. Named after the numerous pine trees that cover the course especially along the fairways, it feels far removed from the Florida coasts. Tom Fazio designed the course and it is considered not only some of his best work, but one of the best courses in the state. It is a tight golf course that is notorious for its vast waste areas and bunkers. Although it has a modest length of 7,259 yards, there is plenty of length within the layout with many of the par 4s stretching past 400 yards. There are two small lakes that come into play. The fourth hole is one of the most well known, and most photographed, in the state. It is a par 5 with a treacherous waste area dominating the right side all the way to the green.

World Woods is #1 in the region !! Photo submitted by webbknight on 09/21/2012
Tough greens
Nice layout. Good size fairways with waste bunkers. Greens have lots of slope, ridges and are very fast. Be prepared for a 4.5 hour round. Recommend this track and will be back!
Play this course and have some fun.
Played again in the early afternoon with no one behind our 4some making for a leisurely 4 hour round.
Picking your landing area correctly on your tee shot will take most of the fairway bunkers out of play.
Pin placements on this day made birdies difficult.
Challenging and picturesque
Loved the course but we were disappointed that the clubhouse closed before we finished at 530 PM.
Best public course in Florida
Me and my son played Pine Barrens, second time for me, first time for my son. 72 degrees. Sunny. Light winds. PERFECT! It had been 20 years since I played there. I knew it was great, but it is hard to describe to someone who has never played Pine Barrens before. Immaculate! Overseeding was in full bloom. Greens were about 10.5 on stimp. Pace of play was great having played in 4 hours and thirty minutes. Dave and Bill at the front counter and the starter and ranger staff were some of the best I have ever been greeted by. Please play here if you are in the Tampa Bay area since it is only about 55 minutes up the Suncoast Expressway from Tampa International Airport. The ladies in the snack bar were kind, considerate, and friendly. I will be back when in the Tampa area.
Great course
I had heard a lot about this course and my first time playing it did not disappoint. The day was made even bettet with a good rate on golf now.
So many Ooh"s and Aaahh's
My husband and I played this course today. First time was maybe 6 years ago..but today it REALLY impressed us. Fantastic condition. Challenging without being stupid. Incredibly picturesque. Really good marshalling. Played at 1:30 and felt like we had the course to ourselves. What more could a golfer want? Getting there from south: Rt 589 best!
Excellent, Excellent!
Come play this #16 rated course on Golf Advisor and you won't be disappointed. I will play this track again and again!
FAZIO DOES IT AGAIN!
Tom Fazio primarlily develops high end private golf clubs (The National Golf Club of Canada, Shadow Creek) so to be able to play a public facility of this caliber by arguably the best modern golf course architect of our time should not be over looked.
Course was in great shape, greens were killer, layout is incredible. Somewhat forgiving off the tee with strategic placement needed at times, the approach shots must be placed delivately. Par 5's are tight in the last 200 yards so go for it if youre hitting it straight or can control your tragectory like a pro. Pine barrens was amazing, ill have to get out to the rolling oaks next time Im down there. Practice facility was insane and the entire facility is very cool all around.
Great value
Still a great layout. Have played course many times over last several years. Course in great shape. Greens rolled good but not their fastest which made putting more tolerable given undulating greens. Recommend course to all.
Pleasantly unFlorida-like
World Woods was fairly early on the scene of true "destination" golf facilities, and it was ahead of the times with its focus on impressive practice facilities and short courses. The nine-hole executive routing, three practice holes and huge practice range and putting course make a golf nut go wide-eyed. Thankfully, the main-attraction golf courses stack up well, too. The Pine Barrens delivers a fun golf experience on a piece of terrain that is hillier than most would associate with Florida. Furthermore, the sandy waste areas along many holes lend the course a different aesthetic. The fact that walking is allowed at any time is a big plus for the golfer wanting to get some exercise in, too.
An absolute must-play location...
The two courses at World Woods (not to mention the par-3 course, and 3-hole warm-up course) are a must play when you are in the Tampa area. Pine Barrens is the higher rated course, a great design, and a challenge to play. The word is that the design is comparable to Pine Valley -- always the #1 or #2 rated course in the world.
When you travel here, schedule 3-4 days...play golf, practice at their world-class practice facility, and enjoy your visit. There is not much in the way of hotels or restaurants in the immediate area but the seclusion lends itself to a focused golf trip with your group.
Great design
The course was in good shape. The greens were a little slower than normal but still putted true
Rupe73
My son and I booked a round here through the golf now app and it was worth every penny and more! The course was in very good shape has some amazing looking holes! The staff and service here was one of the best I’ve seen at a golf course and I play a lot.
Almost Perfect
Everything was great except the beverage cart person who was not personable or courteous. The golf staff was awesome! Love the course & brought 2 people who have never been there. Only negative feedback was the beverage cart person. She was not nice.
Make the drive, it's a gem
Best layout I've played without driving South to Sarasota
Fazio did an excellent layout
nice day in brooksville
had good time played in 4.5 hrs course very busy, however moved along well
Exceptional course and design
First time playing and actually played both courses . Good layout and design. Lots of undulation, and bunkers.
Arrogant Ranger
Rude ranger. Told us to speed up play when we’re on pace. Let a threesome through on the second hole which made him mad for some reason, even though if we hadn’t we really would’ve held the course up... Finished the round in 4 hours as a foursome but he continued to be rude and no one was waiting on us...Ruined our Christmas Eve outing. Terrible hospitality for the price.
Pine Barrens
Took my son out for our annual World Woods trip. We always love playing the course and today was perfect weather for it. The course was in great shape, the only negative is many of the waste bunkers were washed out and the sand was compacted. The pace of play was awesome, didn’t see another golfer in front of us the entire round. For the price, this course offers everything you could hope for and more. Always a treat to play.
