About
Editor's Note: Course closed and redesigned as Cabot Citrus Farms.
The Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club is one of two championship golf courses at the club. Named after the numerous pine trees that cover the course especially along the fairways, it feels far removed from the Florida coasts. Tom Fazio designed the course and it is considered not only some of his best work, but one of the best courses in the state. It is a tight golf course that is notorious for its vast waste areas and bunkers. Although it has a modest length of 7,259 yards, there is plenty of length within the layout with many of the par 4s stretching past 400 yards. There are two small lakes that come into play. The fourth hole is one of the most well known, and most photographed, in the state. It is a par 5 with a treacherous waste area dominating the right side all the way to the green.

Great layout
A great layout. Course is extremely challenging and beautiful. Just top dressed the greens, a little to.slow for me but that is all a part of maintenance. Looking forward to playing again when greens are normal. A must play. This is pure golf, no homes, just peace and quiet and fun. Go play
World Woods Golf Club - Pine Barrens
2:30 pm tee time w/ wife for $22.36/ea thru Golfnow Hot Deal. This is a gorgeous course. No houses on course. Very serene & quiet. Every hole is spectacular to look at. Challenging but fair course. Fairways were decent, have played more carpeted fairways, but very playable. Course has elevation changes. Tee boxes in good condition. Greens are elevated, rolling true & fairly fast. Pro shop well stocked & in same building as eatery. Employees were friendly. They let us tee up a good 45 minutes prior to actual tee time. Recently other places won't let Golfnow payers tee off before actual tee time purchased. Well worth the 1 hour 45 minute ride. Will definitely return.

Great Course
As usual, the course was in very good condition despite the downed trees from Irma. The bunkers, understandably, need some work as it has taken on lots of rain.
The layout is spectacular. Not sure why, but 17 gets me every time. Need accurate tee shots.
Playable Despite Irma
World Woods - Pine Barrens remains one of the top courses in Central Florida. Irma had a significant impact on the course with many trees down, wet conditions, and all bunkers in rough shape. Most of the trees affecting play have been removed, and they had begun the process of refurbishing the enormous amount waste bunker areas on the course, but it will take time. Recommend you play lift clean and place everywhere for some time to come. Greens were smooth but like the last two times I've played the course this year, the speed is estimated at only 7-8 on the stimpmeter. Too slow, and a too grainy. To remain a top course the green speed need to be at minimum 9-10, and verticut frequently enough to reduce the grain influence on very undulating greens. The greens are all somewhat elevated, fall off on all sides and historically drain better than any course I have ever played, so why the slow speed?
Look forward to playing here many times in the future, as it's one of my favorites, and it expect it back to its top form shortly.
Great condition after hurricane. Will have to continue to make drive until courses in Villages are playable. I really don't mind. lol.
BAD CONDITIONS
Must have been an anomaly - horrible conditions, especially the greens, and the pace of play was turtle-like. I feel they should have said something before I paid - but then again, I wouldn't have come. Won't be going back for awhile.
This course is a fair challenge and requires management on all holes.
The course was not quite fully recovered from airifiction. But still in great condition.
Greens have been aerated recently making putts more challenging than the already difficult greens but the rest of the course was in good shape. In a couple more weeks it will be back to normal. Always love playing this course
The dogs day
It was a little tough early because I had a couple slow groups in front of me. The Ranger was honest and said you might just want to go play the front nine again. However I decided to go play 12 through 18 on the back nine and then play the rest of the front nine and I enjoyed my round . Golf now was absolutely right the greens were aerated and they were not bad but it was honest and that's why I got the rate I got. It's a fun course but I don't think it's as good as the rating that golf digest gives it. By the way I know how golf digest does the ratings and is quite bogus should never go buy them
Great Course
We played in the afternoon and even though we encountered some wicked storms early the round was great fun. Awesome layout. The ranger was also great
Florida Gem
This is one of the special places in Florida to play golf. Several unique and memorable holes. In great shape. Had an awesome time!
Remote Bargain
A coworker and myself were in Orlando for several days for a work conference and decided to come down early to play Pine Barrens on a Sunday and Monday. Greens fees were $50 on Sunday (plus a $20 replay for a $70 total - absolute steal) and $40 on Monday morning.
Given that this is Florida's off season and the course had experienced heavy rain the day before, the course was in outstanding shape. Greens have recovered well from punching 2 or so weeks ago and were rolling well. Other than 17 fairway, the fairways were in excellent condition and the waste areas featured prominently around the course were well maintained.
In terms of design, this is definitely the most unique course I have ever had the pleasure to play. #4 and #15 here are truly exceptional holes that stand out against any course I've been on. On Pine Barrens you will not see the same hole twice, and at least 6 holes on the course give you that "this might be the best hole on the course" thought when looking off the tee box.
Fair warning for first timers, choose the tees commensurate to your skill level. I would rate this course as extremely challenging from the tips. It's extremely long and has very undulating greens, but if you like a challenge this course will give you everything you want.
Would highly recommend this course to all skill levels as 5 sets of tees cater to all players. The course is forgiving enough from the forward tees to accommodate a 25+ handicap while also challenging skilled players from the back tees. All in all, this in my opinion a must play course if you're in the area and I will be returning if I'm ever in the area again.
A Fazio Bargin
Tom Fazio might be the greatest course designer of all time. He is my personal favorite and I am on a quest to play each of his courses. Overall this course is stunningly beautiful and ranks as one of my favorites. Seamlessly blending into the surrounding pine forest, Fazio courses never look manufactured or 'plopped' down. Yet this little gem has a neglected air that worries me.
This course is a real anomaly. Not part of a resort or club, it was built in the middle of nowhere, with no lodging nearby and has no membership. it's a public course, open to all. it is very inexpensive, which may be part of the problem. Despite its peaceful beauty, close inspection reveals out of shape greens, tee boxes in very poor shape and fairways fairly beat up.
There is a very small 'cafe' to grab a quick bite and an adequate pro shop if you need to grab something, but no club house to speak of. Bring your own towel if you want a quick shower in the one shower room after your round. Very pretty practice areas abound.
The course has five tees, although the furthest back has tee boxes so out of shape as to be unusable. There are no combo cards made ready and so my husband (9 handicap) played his own combo black/green, depending on the look of the box. I play the orange, which were really too easy (114) and stuck so far foward as to make the landing areas awkward and hazards not really in play. (I hate when the most forward tees are an afterthought.) I should have played a white/orange combo and if the course were part of a club, I'm sure there would be combo carefully thought out to give proper stroke indexes & etc.
But as it is, the course seems a bit of a duffers paradise.
Very lax dress codes and lots of 'public' players shouting and cursing on the course. Music blasting from carts blazing around.
And still the holes are a treat. Only three par 5s and no too long, the course is effeminately playable even for the higher handicaps.
Hardly any water hazards, but guarded, tiered greens. Although the greens were not in top shape, having recently been aerated, you could see the nice variety in elevations, with enough contour to make things interesting.
Look out for the signature long waste areas running down the left side and the occasional middle of the fairway tree. The 14th has a double green and lucky you when play is to the easier left side green!
Not to missed for Fazio fans and perhaps midweek better than weekends to avoid some of the more 'public' public. But even on a busy sunday we played in four hours and the ranger was around often to keep things moving.
Must play golf course
This is one of best courses ever played. Very challenging. Greens are quite difficult (but fair) to putt since you never seem to get a flat putt on any hole. Each hole seems to be quite different and enjoyable.
Nice course
The course was in great shape the greens were little fast but nice. Were coming back!
Great Course Layout
World Woods Pine Barrens is ranked in the Top 100 Public Courses in America. I was a little disappointed in the conditions of the course for holding such a high ranking. There were brown spots on several greens, and the fairways had quite a few dead spots. PB's sister course, Rolling Oaks, was in much better shape. The par 5's on this course are all great. There is also a par 4 with two greens (much better hole with the green on the right-hand side). I had extremely high expectations for a course ranked #68 and was a little let down by the conditions. The layout was nice, but not really picture worthy either. Lots of elevation changes and it is definitely a course you need to use proper course management skills to score well. If you are coming to World Woods make sure you also play Rolling Oaks. You might come away debating which course you like better.
I would recommend this course, but wouldn't plan around playing these courses. If they are relatively in the way then make the stop. If you are choosing a Top 100 place to play in the Orlando or Tampa area then Streamsong blows World Woods out of the water. If you are on a budget, World Woods is much friendlier on the wallet. Streamsong, in my opinion, is still a better value as it is in a completely different class. Better yet, play them all!
One of the best in Florida
Always a treat to play World Woods! Great shape as always. Greens are running about 9.5 but are pretty true. Fairways and tees are very good! Pine Barrens is a test for all!
