About
Editor's Note: Course closed and redesigned as Cabot Citrus Farms.
The Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club is one of two championship golf courses at the club. Named after the numerous pine trees that cover the course especially along the fairways, it feels far removed from the Florida coasts. Tom Fazio designed the course and it is considered not only some of his best work, but one of the best courses in the state. It is a tight golf course that is notorious for its vast waste areas and bunkers. Although it has a modest length of 7,259 yards, there is plenty of length within the layout with many of the par 4s stretching past 400 yards. There are two small lakes that come into play. The fourth hole is one of the most well known, and most photographed, in the state. It is a par 5 with a treacherous waste area dominating the right side all the way to the green.

World Woods is #1 in the region !! Photo submitted by webbknight on 09/21/2012
Great Layout
Very challenging layout with many holes to remember. You will think you are no longer in Florida. greens rolled really well and the fairways were in good shape. This is a great value for the money and makes you think when you are playing. Also, the service in the snack bar was great and the staff very friendly. My wife played and was able to enjoy herself from the front tees.
One of the best in Florida
Great, challenging golf course. The greens are a bit severe and some of the holes need to be cut in a flatter part of the green but overall great experience.
excellent conditions from tee to green
Played on a Friday afternoon with 2 others, pace of play excellent finished in 4 hours 10 minutes. From tee to green , excellent conditions . Fairways were exceptional , and if had not rained in months. Choose your tee box wisely, 7237 from the tips , 5891 from the men's white tees give golfers of all abilities a good test. Large undulating greens and numerous waste bunkers provide quite a challenge. Only complaint no ball washers on the entire course or the gold carts. bring an extra small towel .
World Woods is my favorite.
Love when I get a chance to play World Woods Pine Barrens course. Got a great Hot Deal rate and got grouped with 2 young Philadelphia Phillie minor league pitchers. They hit from the black tees which is a little more than I should play at nearly age 60 but I sucked it up and played from them as well. I generally am not used to hitting some long irons into the par 4's but it was a fun day. The greens are always some the finest you'll ever putt on. Fairways are still in nice shape considering the extreme lack of rain in this area of Florida. Certainly worth the drive from anywhere and any distance; you won't ever be disappointed.
Fabulous
OK, we had just spent a week at a famous course in Palm Harbor. Conditions there were horrible, and hi dollar to boot! What a surprise this was following that! Fazio is my fav designer to start with. Greens like carpet, what you see you get, no surprises. Fairways also green and full. And the price, $40!!! In relative terms than, the resort we played and stayed should have paid ME to play any of their courses!
One of the best courses you can play in FL
We played this fabulous course after playing the over priced courses at Innisbrook. What a different in course conditions. Pine Barrens's fairways are pristine and greens while the two over priced courses we played at Innisbrook were brown and spotty. Innisbrook should be ashamed of charging $200 to play their two top courses while we paid $40 for the afternoon rate at Pine Barrens.
Pine Barrens's layout is fantastic. Greens, however, are on the slow side and many bunkers were not raked. But the beauty of the layouts and fairway conditions made up for this small inferiority.
If you plan to play in Tampa area, skip Innisbrook and drive an hour North to play Pine Barrens. You will save hundreds of dollars and enjoy your golf experiences instead of wondering what happens to Innisbrook?
I hidden gem...
We read the wonderful reviews on both courses at World Woods and were excited to get there for 36 holes. We expected a large clubhouse and a resort seal but were surprised when we saw that the pro shop was very small and the lunch room was more of a grill. The staff was friendly and we went out for the early rounds on Barren Oaks. The greens were fast and true. Course conditions were great and this would be a favorite if I lived in the area. Make sure to pick the right set of tees because this course is tough. This is a definite must play.
Great course in north central Florida
I played this course with my female partner who is relatively new to golf. We thoroughly enjoyed the excellent conditions. I had not played here for several years but I was not disappointed. We played in the late afternoon and we moved along quickly.
Must play
This course was in great shape .We live near the course and know that the area needs rain thus If you get off the fairway it is very dry and with little grass. Greens are huge with lots of slope.greens were a little slow. Brought friends from up north and they loved it
Excellent course
Course was in great shape. Best course I've played in quite some time
World Woods - Great track
I played this in early March, but it was the first course I've played in this part of the state where I didn't have to play "Winter rules". The fairways were perfect, and so were the greens. This wasn't the basic layout either. Most of the holes were far more interesting that the typical course (some had split fairways). This course seems to be out in the middle of nowhere. All of the holes were surrounded by trees so there wasn't a house or condo to be hit anywhere. Sure the course had plenty of trees and sand, but no windows to worry about... now that I think about it, I don't think there were any out of bounds markers either. (If there were, they must have be very few and well hidden.) The sand areas were considered to be waste bunkers, so you could ground your club
legally. Sand was firm out in the fairway waste areas, but softer near the greens like a normal bunker. Bottom line: nice course, pretty setting, interesting holes, worth the drive. PS: We even had a wild turkey take a stroll on one of the fairways. I'm sure there are plenty of deer around too, but we didn't see any that day.
Bring your A game
The starter said most people play from the whites. We decided to pleat from the tips. He was right, 92, very challenging. I will be back.

Four of us flew into Orlando from Philadelphia for a golf trip and drove 2 hours (each direction) to World Woods Pine Barrens and if you asked us was it worth it, I'd say absolutely. I'd even admit we debated driving back the next day it was that great.
Pace of play was excellent. No one in front of us and no one pushing us from behind.
Staff friendliness was A+.
Cost was maybe the greatest golf bargain we've ever experienced, but we did book through a third party.
If you're anywhere near Tampa, this is a must play course.
First time player
Staff were great, especially the Starter. He was very informative on pin placements and some tips to play a couple of the holes. Nice guy. We had a great day. I highly recommend it.
Lives Up to Its Name
Pine Barrens is designed with Pine Valley in mind, and while it doesn't deliver Pine Valley conditions, the style of the course matches the New Jersey Pinelands to a T. Great design, very picturesque holes. Will definitely play again on another trip to Tampa.
