About
Editor's Note: Course closed and redesigned as Cabot Citrus Farms.
The Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club is one of two championship golf courses at the club. Named after the numerous pine trees that cover the course especially along the fairways, it feels far removed from the Florida coasts. Tom Fazio designed the course and it is considered not only some of his best work, but one of the best courses in the state. It is a tight golf course that is notorious for its vast waste areas and bunkers. Although it has a modest length of 7,259 yards, there is plenty of length within the layout with many of the par 4s stretching past 400 yards. There are two small lakes that come into play. The fourth hole is one of the most well known, and most photographed, in the state. It is a par 5 with a treacherous waste area dominating the right side all the way to the green.

Great Course
Great course one of the best in the area. Extremely tough greens to read.
Very Solid Golf Course
I really liked the design and layout of the course – very cool/unique for Florida. The greens and fairways were in perfect condition, but any non-waste bunker area adjacent to the fairways were nearly bare hardpan (i.e., what would normally be first cut of rough). I think this is part of the intended look/feel of the course, but be aware that you’ll get some wicked lies for only moderately offline drives. Clubhouse and dining facilities are limited, but this is a golf COURSE not a golf RESORT. Additionally, I booked the first tee time in the morning as a single and was hoping to fly around in <3 hours. The starter, however, asked me to delay my start and paired with the threesome immediately behind me. This was disappointing especially considering that my round ended up close to 5 hours. My group backed up the whole course and we were first off! We could have used some ranger help to encourage my playing partners to speed up.
Lofty ranking
I liked Pine Barrens, I did. But I included it on my way to Streamsong because I try to play as many of the "Top 100" public courses in America. And while it was a delightful course, how it can rank in the 30s on these lists is a bit baffling. Loved the natural features. Tough to find a course in northwestern FL that looks like it belongs in the middle of Southen Pines, NC! There were several really well-designed holes, starting with the par-5 4th hole. Split fairways offer a risk/reward option. Green is large and its bowl shape will hold second shots. The 15th is one of the most fun par 4s I've ever played. Be aggressive and go for the green. Well-struck drives will safely cross the hazard and reach the landing area, or may find the putting surface. The practice facility is among the best I've ever seen. A circular range that can provide varying shots no matter the wind direction. Putting green and short course was closed due to top-dressing. All in all, solid course but should not be ranked in top 80 of public courses in US if I am being honest.

Pinebarrons
Greens were a slow for this time of year... due to the rye grass Kickin In ...but overall it in good shape...
Course is fabulous. Very unique layout
Course was in fabulous condition. Fairway, tees and greens all perfect shape. Can't wait to play it again.
Great value
More visually attractive than the Oaks course, but also not for the crooked hitter. Natural areas could use some TLC, and firmer conditions.
Real hidden gem
This is now my favorite course in the area. A real hidden gem. Great value for money. Great course layout. Mplaying fromantic the tips will challenge any level of player or move up to one of the 5 other tees. Definitely need to think on a few holes that will reward course management while others will reward the bomber. Definitely put this course on your list.
One of the best courses in the state and southeast US
This course was amazing! This course requires an advanced level of skill play. If you are not a sub-10 handicap, then it is necessary to play the front tees.
This layout has everything a course needs to make it world class. The course design makes the holes appear as if they were carved out of the surrounding pine forest. The elevated tees provide vantage points that detail the elevation changes each golfer must conquer while enduring the length of each hole.
The greens are top tier. The undulation coupled with the lightning fast greens make any birdie worth a celebration. I cannot wait to play this course again.
great course
This course is in every magazine's top 100 list with good reason.
The layout is no nonsense.all is there in front of you.
Great conditioning.I played on a weekday and sped through the round.Played as a single and joined others.
Well worth the 1hr 20 min. it took me each way to get there.
Top class course
Just great! Says my review is too short. The two words I posted say it all
You have to play
Great course. We try to play it Nov and Apr
Cdn snowbirds. Never disappointed.
Highly recommend
Typical good Fazio design
I played this course the very first year it opened 23 years ago. And a few more time since then. It was then one of the best in the USA. It is still a very nice course to play, but it seems that the general conditions of the course have somewhat deteriorated. All bunkers have become waste areas with little evident maintenance. But the greens, tee boxes and fairways, recently overseeded are in great shape. Still worth the detour!
One of the Best!
Seven friends and I take a yearly trip to Tampa to play golf. Two years ago, we played Pine Barrens for the first time. Are we glad we did!
We were aware that the course had been overseeded in the weeks prior to our visit. We were also well aware that carts would have to stay on the cart paths. We didn't care. Pine Barrens is worth walking!
From the moment you pull up to t bag drop, the staff is welcoming and friendly. Our bags were removed from our vehicles and grouped together on carts. The staff in the pro shop was very accommodating and friendly.
The range at World Woods is fantastic. There is plenty of teeing ground and plenty of targets to hit balls to. The putting greens were in great shape and offered multiple holes to practice various types of putts.
The starter was a very nice gentleman. He welcomed us and reminded us to stay on the cart paths.
The course was in fantastic shape. The tees were a bit hairy because of the overseeding. But it's always nicer to have too much grass versus having bare tees. The fairways were fabulous. The ball sat up nicely and was easy to hit. The waste bunkers were what you'd expect from a waste bunker. One plus is that most of the bunkers were firm and fair. The greens rolled true, although a bit slow from the overseeding.
The pace of play was wonderful. We didn't wait once and no one pushed us. We finished our round in 4:05. A good pace considering we had to walk to our balls.
World Woods is well worth the drive from Tampa. I'd highly recommend it to any golfer who wants to play a truly special course!
Great golfing challenge.
Having played Rolling Oaks the previous day I found the Pines to be more of a challenge. Both courses are immaculately presented with, in my opinion, the Oaks to be the prettiest of the two. World Woods is definitely on our list of must play courses when we return to holiday next year.
Rolling Hills
The course was in great condition - loved it!
Fantastic
Warm, sunny, calm wind, beautiful landscaping, . . .shot an 82. What could be better?
Pine barrens
Had a great time playing this course. Great course layout. Very deceptive tee shots. Course is manageable if you play from the correct tees. For the money it may be the best value in Florida
