About
Editor's Note: Course closed and redesigned as Cabot Citrus Farms.
The Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club is one of two championship golf courses at the club. Named after the numerous pine trees that cover the course especially along the fairways, it feels far removed from the Florida coasts. Tom Fazio designed the course and it is considered not only some of his best work, but one of the best courses in the state. It is a tight golf course that is notorious for its vast waste areas and bunkers. Although it has a modest length of 7,259 yards, there is plenty of length within the layout with many of the par 4s stretching past 400 yards. There are two small lakes that come into play. The fourth hole is one of the most well known, and most photographed, in the state. It is a par 5 with a treacherous waste area dominating the right side all the way to the green.

World Woods is #1 in the region !! Photo submitted by webbknight on 09/21/2012
great place to play
played Pine Barrens several rounds and enjoy it every time
lives up to rating and reputation
nothing but good to say about this place. be ready for fast but true and undulating greens. lots of 3 putts if you are more than 15ft out from pin. this is not a course for beginners or novice. good test of golf and beautiful.
Great Greens
Good course with great greens. 6-7 iconic holes. The rest are very solid. Pace of play was a little slow but nothing to get worked up about.
Great Layout
This was a great find and our foursome thoroughly enjoyed our round. We would never guess you were playing in Florida based on the landscape. Beautiful all around. The clubhouse is a little to be desired along with the Resturant. The food was good but just not a desirable place to sit and hang out. I will say 3 of us paid $69 on GN and our 4th walked up and the course charged him $52. Buyer beware. Overall I would play it again even at $69.
Enjoyable experience
The course is an excellent challenge for all ability levels. Good variety of holes. The presence of sand waste bunkers increases the challenge and interest. Staff are friendly and accommodating.
Great course, return visit
My fourth trip to World Woods, great facility, practice areas and course conditions.
Course was great
Very friendly staff. Pace of play was good. The course was in good condition. Very relaxing environment. Loads of wildlife. A real pleasure to play.
excellent courses,poor customer relations
this is my second review of world woods, this time i have a couple of complaints.got a great deal for $18 on the day i played, when getting to the course i found out why.there was a mini tour event going on.the starter was the only one to inform me of this and he was the only reason the staff review was not poor.the person at the counter was more intrigued in his phone conversation than waiting on customers.the outside cart staff wasn't to enthused on helping before or after the round.i booked for the pine barrons course and with mini tour event completing 18 holes was impossible so the starter tried to get us on other course but that not being possible got us out on pine barrons but at turn got us out on the front nine of rolling oaks.now world woods management that is customer service, unlike your pro shop and cart staff.fairways a little chewed up,but greens very smooth just not as fast as they looked.
always the best value for top notch courses in FL
hands down - best 'buddy trip' place to play in ALL of FL. I take 16-20 guys here twice a year and they always sign up immediately to go again!
this is fazio design at its best, with vast waste bunkers everywhere and cleverly routed holes carved out of the natural terrain. the par 5s are some of the best anywhere, with great risk/reward shots juxtaposed against safe bail outs if you don't need to go low.
every hole is memorable, but the 'drive the canyon' signature hole (#15) really makes the team game fun.
previously ranked in the top 100 in the nation, it is always worth the drive, and considering how much less it costs for package deals than other courses in the disney area, you will not be disappointed making the 75 minute drive...
A giant sand bunker
Pine Barren has long been on my bucket list given its positive review, so without hesitation I drove the 75min from St. Petersburg to try the test. I was genuinely impressed with the 360degree grass practice range. From the tee box, I found the optics of each drive created a smaller than actual target area (a welcomed challenge) and that each hole had plenty of bale-out zone. One thing I did not like was the sandy soil; I cant remember a round where I drew so many horrific lies, with the ball plugged deep into waste-area or greenside bunker sand. The greens were fair-- not overly difficult. I do think a 2nd attempt at this course would yield better scoring results, given the abundance of waste-land and trees requiring knowledge of target areas. But for now, Ive had enough of that sand!
A Must Play
The course was in fantastic shape. It is always well worth the drive and I will be back!
plays long
Zero roll on fairways
Course plays very very long
ball doesnt seem to fly
maybe humid conditions
Beautiful course
The architecture of this course makes the setting fit so well into its surroundings. Photos cannot fo it justice. One must be in it. Challanging greens. Challanging fairways. Very challangingvsand. But fun to play. I was fortunate to be with veterans of the course so advice was appreciated. Cart girls are awesome but beer is outrageous in price. Staff is great. Driving range is great. Practice green is incredible. Pitching green as well. Lots of wild life including eagles.
Always a good time
Pine Barrens is more challenging than Rolling Oaks and very different in that all the sand is waste area rather than bunkers. It's a slightly more difficult walk due to the elevation changes and a few longer green to tee distances, but still a very good one.
Always a great time at World Woods!
I personally like Rolling Oaks better than Pine Barrens, but I was bringing a friend to the course for the first time, and wanted him to see the quarry holes. The course was in beautiful shape as usual, and the pace of play was fantastic. I don't think we ever had to wait on a single hole. We bought our round on GolfNow, and I called the pro shop to let them know we would be a few minutes late. They said, "No problem, we'll take care of you," and we had no issues whatsoever. What I love most about World Woods is that you're out in the middle of nowhere, with all kinds of nature, no houses, just solid, beautiful, pure golf. I try to play up there at least once a year, but should probably try to go more often since it's only an hour from me. We played from the green tees (one back from the whites, and one up from the blacks), which are about 6400 yards. Anything more at my age of 55, and I'd be coming into 4-par holes with my hybrid. The whites are not challenging enough if you're an 8-12 handicap. Highly recommended.
wow
If you are looking for visually stunning golf, away from any distractions, this is it. Natural elevation changes in Florida! The courses are in very good condition and if the greens were as good as others we experienced during the week in Florida, my playing partner and I would have repeated the 2 hour drive from Sarasota to play both courses again in a heartbeat. What surrounds the courses is showing its age. The club house probably has not been updated since built, cart paths are cracked and upheaving and the staff acted ( except for energetic Shawn at the bag drop ) as if it was kind of nice to see us. I would highly recommend playing both courses just do not expect the professional treatment off the courses you will get else were.
Great golf course!
Both courses are fun and quite enjoyable! A lot more sand and waste bunker areas give the course a tougher feel.
Love the courses
as usual course was in overall great shape and doesn't get any easier, especially the greens. Staff always courteous and efficient. A great experience and worth the twice a year drive from Largo. Only issue would be the shape of some of the green side bunkers which even though all are classified as waste bunkers could use with some basic maintenance. Happened to find a few and they were not good.
Pine Barrens
First time playing. It helps to know the course and where to hit your shots. Stay out of the many waste bunkers if you can.
Do play this golf course.
The best value for us on golfnow.com. Course is in excellent condition. Experience on this course is a definite advantage.
Loved it!!!!
