About
Editor's Note: Course closed and redesigned as Cabot Citrus Farms.
The Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club is one of two championship golf courses at the club. Named after the numerous pine trees that cover the course especially along the fairways, it feels far removed from the Florida coasts. Tom Fazio designed the course and it is considered not only some of his best work, but one of the best courses in the state. It is a tight golf course that is notorious for its vast waste areas and bunkers. Although it has a modest length of 7,259 yards, there is plenty of length within the layout with many of the par 4s stretching past 400 yards. There are two small lakes that come into play. The fourth hole is one of the most well known, and most photographed, in the state. It is a par 5 with a treacherous waste area dominating the right side all the way to the green.

World Woods is #1 in the region !! Photo submitted by webbknight on 09/21/2012
Visually stunning course but the staff let it down
This is an exceptional golf course. Great views from the tee and challenging tee shots to avid sand. There no actual bunkers on this course, they are all designated waste areas?! Course was in real good condition and a delight to play. What stops me giving this a perfect score are the staff. From the miserable girl on the drinks cart to the down right rude lass in the club house. We were a group of 16 golfers and treated as though we were an unwelcome interruption. Customer service was the worst we experienced all week across 7 golf courses! Club House facilities poor and we were told we had to get out by 5.00pm as they needed to set up for a function?!
GREAT COURSE-CONDITIONS
The course was in excellent shape. The big undulating greens had a light sandy topping but did not really affect the speed of the putt, which was fast.
still great, but showing some wrinkles
World Woods is scenic, peaceful and best yet, there's s not a home to be seen on the course. The Pro Shop greets you indifferently and failed to know if the White tees were rated for women. They said no, but we later found this rating online.
The course remains pristine, but the cart paths are breaking up in a lot of locations. Our afternoon tee time left us at the mercy of today's daily fee players, meaning forget the waste and trap areas from being raked or any ball marks fixed.
The greens were very bumpy, more so than just due to the play that day. There are quite a few memorable holes at Pine Bartend, but about 5-6 pretty forgettable ones also.
It's a definite recommendation, but I think it's place on the Top 100 that you can play is on jeopardy. Still, with internet rates, you can't go wrong here.
Crowds are Back
Played on Sunday 11/8 at 11:23. Had a $40 special. Course was good. Fairways and tee boxes nice. Greens nice but slower than I would have expected probably about a 9 on the stimp. Pace of play was not nice. Almost a 5 hour round. This place was booked up. Love this facility and will return.
World Woods Pine Barrons
Course in great shape from tee to green. Excellent fairways. Thought I played OK but didn't score well 90, short sided greens on misses and found it very difficult to chip it close. PB is tougher than the Oaks, greens have more slope and slightly faster but are still slow for uphill putts. Great time, great company , pace of play OK, finished round but last two holes it was dark.
Golf World Woods
Faculty had been reseed. Conditions were above average, but surrounding areas near tees and bunkers poor and in need of attention.
Best Course for the $ on earth
The only thing you need to know is GO!!!! Play this course as many times as you are able....SPECIAL!!! SPECTACULAR! !!!
Greens
This is one of the best courses in the area and I love it. However, this particular time there were a few patches on some greens on the back nine that were under repair. Besides this little faux pa, this course is great, as well as the staff. Nicest people, trying to make your golfing experience as great as possible. Greg
Challenge
not your typical FL course, elevation changes everywhere, fun track, will test your game. Always enjoy playing Pine Barrens!
Easy drive to World Woods
The terrain is great carved into the rolling sand hills north of Brooksville up the Suncoast Parkway just 45 minutes north of Tampa. I paid $15 on GolfNow and this beyond its prime long in the tooth somewhat neglected superior layout made a beautiful drive from Sarasota up over the Skyway Bridge and past the Tampa Airport to the Suncoast Parkway. World Woods seems to have met the same economics as Black Diamond GC nearby: neglect due to lack of golfers and a remote location. I liked Rolling Oaks as well or better than Pine Barrens. The best new courses in the Tampa area are Streamsong Red and Blue: but at $300 they are in a completely different stage of the lifecycles.
Wonderful birthday weekend
This was a wonderful weekend of golfing for me and my husband. This course was recommended buy another golfer that joined us the previous weekend at another course. He was right on the money when he said it is an "impressive course". I couldn't think of anywhere better to spend my birthday. It was amazing. I am brand new to the game but was not intimidated by the layout. This is a golfers bucket list/top 20 pick. The views from the tee's were amazing not the typical flatness we are used to. Beautiful lighting, landscaping and wildlife. The check in process was professional, thorough and seamless from beginning to the end. Loved the placement of restrooms every 4th hole which keeps speed of play moving. Cannot wait to return with another couple and stay at the Villas.
Diappointing Slow Greens
Greens were like putting on Brillo Pads. Course was good but most important to me is the Greens and they were probably Punched in last few weeks and were not cut close at all.
A Little Disappointing
Course is nice, but was disappointed in the overall experience. This was my 3-4 time playing at World Woods. Two friends flew in from PA and one of my buddies had to rent clubs. The rental clubs were embarrassing to be quite honest. It was a mixed set of random clubs. A matching set of clubs from Walmart would have been better than the 14 different kind of clubs in the bag. Very disappointed in the rental clubs. First tee was backed up about 2 tee times and the starter could have been talking less to us about the rules. That being said, it is a nice course. But again, I can't bring any friends from out of town because of the rental clubs.
fantastic!
World Woods IS all world! Played both courses and couldn't ask for anything better. I am SO glad I live close enough that I can enjoy these 2 gems. Took my brother from NC as a treat. They are simply the best! One pleasant surprise was lunch. The burgers are thick as steaks.
Even with the rain, the day was hard to beat!
You Have to Play This Course!
If you live in the Tampa Bay area, it is worth the drive to World Woods to experience both Pine Barrens and it's sister course.
Wow
This facility lives up to the hype on my first visit. From the 3 practice holes, well maintained conditions, and not a house in sight this is a golfers paradise making it hard to believe you're still in FL. Best place I've ever played.
Great Value, don't miss this one
These courses are the best value in Florida and possibly on the Golf digest 100 list. The courses look benign from the tees, but give you plenty of challenge and trouble if you miss your shot. There are risks and rewards for all levels of golfers. You can go around the trouble, put yourself into huge traps and try to get out in one....take your pick.
I have played these courses over the years and find that they only improve. as they mature.
Spend $40-50 to play these or go to Springsong and pay $175 with caddie to walk...both are enjoyable, both are top 100, Better yet, do both.
Pine Barrens
Fantastic course (actually the facilities in general are fantastic). It looks nothing like a Florida course in that it has elevation changes. It was in great shape and every hole has challenges. Easily enjoyable for levels of golfers. I will definitely be back.
Top notch course / must play
On a drive up from Tampa to North Central Florida, I was driving through an area called Brookville. I saw a discount tee time and even though weather wasn't all that great, I decided to play a round here. I was pleasantly surprised. It is a must play course worth making it a golf destination. Course reminds me of playing in pine lined course of NC or northern states. Not something you would see in FL. Becareful though, this area is known to have lightning strikes. Friend told me that while they were playing, lightning struck a tree near by and knocked his playing partners to the ground.
worth the money
played on a hot afternoon. i was impressed with the course conditions in the heat.
