About
Editor's Note: Course closed and redesigned as Cabot Citrus Farms.
The Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club is one of two championship golf courses at the club. Named after the numerous pine trees that cover the course especially along the fairways, it feels far removed from the Florida coasts. Tom Fazio designed the course and it is considered not only some of his best work, but one of the best courses in the state. It is a tight golf course that is notorious for its vast waste areas and bunkers. Although it has a modest length of 7,259 yards, there is plenty of length within the layout with many of the par 4s stretching past 400 yards. There are two small lakes that come into play. The fourth hole is one of the most well known, and most photographed, in the state. It is a par 5 with a treacherous waste area dominating the right side all the way to the green.

World Woods is #1 in the region !! Photo submitted by webbknight on 09/21/2012
A "must play" public course
Driving into the course you know it's going to be a great experience! From check in to the drive on the first tee the customer service was fantastic. The ranger explained all the details of the course as a "first timer" and even recommended what tips to hit from based on handicap. Every hole was a new adventure. Would highly recommend and definitely would play again!
Pine Barrons
Course is outstanding. Greens cut shorter and a little quicker than normal. Still left putts short. One of the best courses you can play for a reasonable rate. Tees and fairways perfect. Bunkers hardpacked. Staff is inconsistent. Got there 30 minutes early and had to wait to check in. Seems to be an anti-Golf Now attitude. Golf attendant at checkin placed bag on cart, gave tip ($3) and saw same guy after round and he looked the other way didn't get a wipe down, would have given another tip. Course is great, people are people!
Best course I've played in a long time
This is a course worth of the PGA tour, or the Masters...
Amazing greens, out of this world scenery, quiet, friendly staff but above all ver well kept!
No dead spots on the turf anywhere...
Will definitely return many more times
Enjoyed my round
First time playing the Pines course. It was in great shape. The course was very challenging but not to difficult. You were rewarded for your good shots while certainly feeling the pain for any poor shot. The greens were a little slow but did role true. The only complaint I have is the number of divots on the green. Most of the greens had this problem. Overall, I was very impressed with the course and look forward to playing the second course soon!
Elevation Changes in FL
I love both courses at world woods but Pine Barrens is the real Gem of the 2. It is just tight enough to be very challenging but not unfair and also long enough to challenge a long hitter. The greens are large , put true, and were in great shape. The multiple practice tees, short game facilities, and 3 warm up holes are second to none. For the money I have not found a better steal in FL.
Still a great experience
Only negative was employee in pro-shop-didn't even say "hello"-no greeting at all. All other employees were fantastic. Course was in excellent shape tee to green. Greens pretty quick-nice.course is wonderful to play--you have to "think" your way around it. Plays longer than you think. All holes are fantastic with nos. 12 and 15 taking the cake. 12 the hole could be toughest I've ever played.
Love the layout
This course makes you think about where you want your tee shot to have the best approach shot. The undulating greens force you to pay close attention to pin placements. Fairways and Greens were near perfect condition. I played Rolling Oaks in the morning and Pine Barrens in the afternoon which gives you two different layouts to fill the day.
Pine barrrens
2nd visit...better when you know it!!! Love the par 3's...Its a must visit..every time to the Tampa area
Awesome golf experience!
Practice range is pristine. No time to play tHE SHORT PRACTICE COURSE. STARTER WAS FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL. COURSE WAS PRISTINE WITH CONSISTENT GREENS. FANTASTIC VALUE FOR THE MONEY.
One of a kind
Have played this course many times, although it was not in the best shape this time it was still probable better than most tracks in the state of Florida.
Above average course
Comparing Pine Barrens to its companon course Rollings Oaks, it is about 5 to 10% more difficult. Love the challenge. As a 82 year-old golfer playing from the forward tees I can barely shoot my age at times. LOve the course and the challenge.
Must play
Pine barrens is reminiscent of tree lined courses in North Carolina. Greens and fairways were im excellent shape. Pace of play was great. Consider this a must play!
Reigning Undisputed Best Value in Central Fla. Golf
You simply cannot beat Pine Barrens when looking for the best course to play in Central Florida for the money. Maybe that won't be the case this winter when the rates double but get out there and enjoy it while it lasts. The tee shots and greens are very challenging (and unusual) for a Florida golf course and the scenery is unmatched. The greens were recently punched but should be fully recovered by late August. The waste areas are very challenging with all the rain, making for another unique component. You have to make the trip if you haven't already.
Lived up to the hype.
I played Pine Barrens for the first time yesterday. The course lived up to all of my expectations. I feel that the few negative reviews are probably more based on the fluff, or lack of fluff at the course and not the golf itself.
If you are looking for a course with a huge clubhouse and a fancy meal after your round, this is not your kind of golf course. It's just not what this course is about.
If you want a purely golf experience on a beautiful challenging course, this is definitely your kind of place.
The practice facility is on another level and the 3 hole warm up course is a great touch to work out the pre-round jitter and knock the rust off before teeing off.
The layout is fantastic and challenging but fair. I actually expected it to be tougher than it was. The greens were in good shape and considering we're in the heat of summer in Florida I'd say they are excellent.
A lot of reviews mention the starter, I'm not sure if its the same guy every day but the starter on duty the day I played was excellent. He gave us a thorough primer of the course and tips that helped us enjoy our round. He even checked in on us a couple of times during the round to see how things were going and how we liked the course.
This was a great day of golf only spoiled by the thunderstorms that ended our day early after the 15th hole. Looking forward to a trip back to play a complete round and check out the Rolling Oaks course.
Great Course worth the drive!
Just like the other 3 times I have played Pine Barrens, the course was in great shape from tee to green. Pace of play was great at 3.5 hrs, worth very penny of $30, can't wait to return and play Rolling Oaks in a month or so after the greens are recovered.
Tougher of the two courses
Pine Barrens is one of two courses you can play at World Woods and is certainly the tougher of the two. Plenty of waste bunkers and the fairways were narrower. However, I enjoyed this course and am looking forward to returning.
The only warning that I would currently issue is that the greens were recently punched and may need about 2 more weeks to fully recover. Otherwise, it is a spectacular golf course.
Great Course | Bring Your Own Clubs
We loved playing this golf course. Every hole is intriguing and the course is tons of fun. Challenging greens, variety of shots to play, beautiful fairways, rolling hills, excellent views and tee options for all skill levels. We played in the rain and still had a blast.
I saw an earlier review that said this course doesn’t have a liquor license but we bought a 6-pack of beer from the clubhouse and they put it on ice for us to take out to the course. It was raining but they said normally a cart girl/guy is driving around. The clubhouse isn’t huge but we don’t spend much time in the clubhouse anyway. I’d rather them put the money into the course and it’s obvious that they’ve done this.
While Pine Barrens definitely penalizes poor shots, it’s not one of those courses where you spend a ridiculous amount of time looking for your golf ball. The rough is not overly thick but it’s still enough to be challenging.
There are a few holes where you have the option of carrying a shot 200+ or playing it safe. There are medium length par 3’s and a long par 3. Same for the 5’s. Every hole is totally different.
You absolutely should not rent clubs from this facility. I could’ve put together a better set by going through the lost and found bin at our local par 3 course. Seriously, do not rent clubs if you like any type of consistency. While the rental price was right ($15-20), the bag contained 5-6 different brands of clubs with each at least 15 years old with some being 20+. The putter looked like something you could get at a yard sale for $0.25. The grips are just as old. We were very surprised that a facility of this caliber would have such terrible rental options.
Overall this is a great facility and you won’t be disappointed if you bring your own clubs.
Fantastic course horrible facilities.
Played yesterday and the course was in fantastic condition even with greens being punched the Monday before they were still in pretty good condition. The clubhouse is nothing special and for being a top course in the state of Florida quite disappointing. The course doesn't have a liquor license so don't plan on playing for drinks at the turn. Also the carts were in pretty sorry shape. It rained for about an hour total during our round and the rain cover for the clubs had two big rips in it and wouldn't open all the way. Basically a great course with pretty disappointing facilities.
A Fun Test
This course is fair but is a test for an average golfer. But as always, we enjoy playing World Woods. Both courses have no houses on them so you are truly out in the natural beauty. Frankly, we enjoy the Rolling Oaks course a little better because it is less difficult.
great layout with challenging holes
Greens, tee area and fairways were in great shape.the greens were very receptive to good shots.
I totally agree with your comment regarding how special this course is. Just wondering....have you played streamsong?
No excuses for the torn rain cover...BUT with all due respect, being a golfer, I don't care if the clubhouse is a trailer....these 2 tracks Pine Barrens and Rolling Oaks) are second to none when it comes to condition, challenge and beauty, with both having a totally different ambiance....and the serenity of being out there with no development around is stunning in itself. Not to mention the phenomenal practice facilities...........this place is 5+ stars.........BTW...I ate in the clubhouse, and the food for all of us was great, the beer was cold, service was great, and well priced. Too many courses build mansions for clubhouses today, and put marginal money into the courses...It's refreshing to see it the other way around...because you can't hit a shot in the clubhouse.
