About
Editor's Note: Course closed and redesigned as Cabot Citrus Farms.
The Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club is one of two championship golf courses at the club. Named after the numerous pine trees that cover the course especially along the fairways, it feels far removed from the Florida coasts. Tom Fazio designed the course and it is considered not only some of his best work, but one of the best courses in the state. It is a tight golf course that is notorious for its vast waste areas and bunkers. Although it has a modest length of 7,259 yards, there is plenty of length within the layout with many of the par 4s stretching past 400 yards. There are two small lakes that come into play. The fourth hole is one of the most well known, and most photographed, in the state. It is a par 5 with a treacherous waste area dominating the right side all the way to the green.

World Woods is #1 in the region !! Photo submitted by webbknight on 09/21/2012
Excellent golf course
Pine Barrens is a wonderful track. Ranger Ed actually drove me, a single around slower foursome, found an opening and then drove me back to play the holes skipped. Has that EVER happened to you? Played the tips at almost 7,300 on moist fairways, but loved every minute. Course great, pro shop is just OK and the grill is below average and the server seemed angry. The best was the golf course and that's all that matters, right?
Course overated
The greens on this course are horrible. Can't understand the rating and hype about this course. Even the bunkers are in bad shape. They need to put some money and work into this course to bring it up to normal playing standards or shut it down. Yes it's that bad.
Worth the drive
I play both courses at World Woods at least once a year. Always well maintained. Large undulations in greens that are HUGE - definitely practice your lag putting on the practice green.
The only downside is the golf course is 20 miles past nowhere. It takes me an hour and a half each way, but once you arrive, it's pure golf. There are NO houses on the property, nothing but nature.
You can't go wrong with either course here, Pine Barrens is more challenging, Rolling Oaks is prettier - but that's like comparing gorgeous to even more gorgeous.
If you are planning on playing in the winter months, definitely join their e-mail club, there are times you can score a 59 dollar round, but this place is worth it even at rack rate.
Wide Fairways
Loved this course. The fairways gives the golfer a nice change from the average Florida course which tend to be narrower. The holes are longer so if you are a shorter hitter second shot becomes more of a challenge but you are usually hitting it from the short grass. Greens are nice and fast and require some degree of reading skill. The course is very attractive and if you get a hot deal it is not overly expensive.
Beautiful golf experience
Wonderful course with beautiful holes. Interesting to play all bunkers as waste areas. Definitely challenging but not penal. Would love to come back and play again.
BestPublic Course in Florida
Simply the best. The only issue was at 2:30 pm it was 52 degrees. Everything else was great and for under $40 the best public course in Florida .
Scenic, rolling hills , greens that scare but are fair.
You won't be disappointed. The course looks and plays like Pinehurst except it is hilly and $400 less to play. Not for beginners or high handicaps the elevated greens and the trouble surrounding them will embarrass a lot of average golfers.
Nice Course, Surly Staff
Great layout (but the greens were pretty rough). Pro shop staff could care less if you lived or died.
World Woods
Enjoyed the course and the layout. My type of course. Greens were difficult to read. A little confusion with the slope and rating as they were different on the scorecard and with the USGA website.
Mark A
Great course. I plan to play it again soon. Every hole had different challenges. Some holes were the most unique I have ever encountered.
Great course, inconsiderate players
The good
Friendly staff.
Prompt.
Helpful.
Great condition and layout.
Fair but extremely challenging.
The bad
Long way from anywhere.
The ugly
I saw more softspike marks, scuff marks and dropped putter marks than if you add up all the golf I have played in the last 5 years.
How can golfers do that to such a beautiful course?
Golf Digest Rating?
Been waiting to play this course for years. I guess I should have waited a few more. The course was in HORRIBLE condition. Won't be back..
Unbelievable Course
Terrain and land course was built on makes for an unbelievable layout. Rained most of the round but we wanted to finish to get to experience every hole. Much harder than Rolling Oaks course at facility.
Great Course
The Pine Barrens course is fantastic! It definitely doesn't feel like Florida golf. The layout is very unique and will test any golfers ability. The elevation changes are a nice change of pace. The employees were all very friendly. The only thing that would make the experience better is a new fleet of golf carts. Overall A+
What a surprise!
Who knew there was a course in FL with hills? The exec course and practice course were well worth getting there early. It's a pretty good hike from Tampa but well worth the trip. I'll definitely be back.
Spectacular!!!
WOW, what a spectacular course! A must play...bring your "A" game for bunker play...lots and lots of sand. Be sure to add this to your list of courses to play around the Brooksville area...you won't be disappointed!
World Woods
Great place....have enjoyed playing both courses several times
Very playable tho looks very demanding
I looked at the course layout before going to the course and wondered how I would maneuver around all the sand. However, landing areas are generous so you can avoid most of it if you plan your play and execute the plan. It forced me to concentrate on my shots and I played my best round of the year on the toughest course I played in 2013. Conditions were excellent; staff was friendly and helpful; pace of play was better than I expected based on the amount of waste areas and reputation.
Deservedly a Top 100 Public Course in America
Knowing that this course is rated as a top 100 public course in America, I decided to stop by while vacationing in Orlando - and I'm glad I did! After playing Rolling Oaks earlier on the same day, Pine Barrens was just on another level on all fronts in terms of scenic beauty, course design, conditions, and fun.
Lots of holes stand out on this course, including 4, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 18.
Driver is not necessarily the best club
Position is more important than length. Lots of waste areas. Ball placement is crucial. Get on the wrong spot on the fairway and it will eat you up. Playing the course the second time will generally give you a better game since you'll know what to expect. Buy the yardage guide at least for the first round.
Fantastic course
As many others have stated, this course is just fabulous. Hole after hole is just spectacular too look at.
I can say that I got my butt kicked by the course. I'm a 2 hdc and played it at 6800, but would have had more fun at 6300, so that's where I'll be playing from next time.
Greens are quite a challenge also.
The Pine Barrens is a little more scenic that the Oaks course, but both are very much worth playing.
Staff is very friendly.
Will go back for sure.
