About
Editor's Note: Course closed and redesigned as Cabot Citrus Farms.
The Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club is one of two championship golf courses at the club. Named after the numerous pine trees that cover the course especially along the fairways, it feels far removed from the Florida coasts. Tom Fazio designed the course and it is considered not only some of his best work, but one of the best courses in the state. It is a tight golf course that is notorious for its vast waste areas and bunkers. Although it has a modest length of 7,259 yards, there is plenty of length within the layout with many of the par 4s stretching past 400 yards. There are two small lakes that come into play. The fourth hole is one of the most well known, and most photographed, in the state. It is a par 5 with a treacherous waste area dominating the right side all the way to the green.

World Woods is #1 in the region !! Photo submitted by webbknight on 09/21/2012
Not up to Par
I have played this course many times, always enjoyed the round. I just picked the wrong day. WGAT was there playing a tournament.
Nothing wrong with that except the Pro Shop didn't tell us the tees are moved, course is packed and it will take a while. Course condition was fine, my only gripe was getting service in packed restaurant, waiting 1/2 hour past tee time and sent to back nine, getting "worked in" at the turn. Made for a long long day. Will I go back? Of course, it is our Augusta. I love the place, both courses are awesome.
beautiful Golf Course will definitely come back and play it again
This is an outstanding golf course and a great value on golfNow. I will definitely come back and play this course anytime I come to the Tampa Bay area. The course is in pristine condition and has a challenging layout.
Great
World class golf course.Bring your assistant pro and a rake.Enjoy the scenery and have a good time.
Hot Deals-Best Deal
Great staff and course conditions. Played on Thanksgiving, hot deals, course empty, best golf experience this year!! Challenging and picturesque at the same time!! The sunset what an added bonus! Thanks for working on Thanksgiving and having such a friendly attitude!! WOW!!!!!
Course was in excellent condition.
Excellent conditions, layout, and amazing service.
Staff was very friendly. Wide open fairways, great greens and pins placement.
Would recommend the course to friends and family. I only played the Pine Barren course, but I plan to go back to play the other course. With the help of GolfNow, it will be sooner than later.
Fun, Fun, Fun
Always a pleasure to play, even if my game is not perfect that day the beautiful surrounding make me smile. Don't be intimidated by the length, the landing areas from the back tee's are larger than from the forward tee's, so move back and let it rip. The greens were in excellent shape, but a little shaggy, would have preferred them to be tighter, but they still rolled true. All in all a very pleasant afternoon in the woods.
We were dissappointed.
Course conditions were not what we expected or experienced in many previous rounds. Tee boxes and greens were lacking maintenance.
This course is a golfer's delight.
Course can be challenging. It is always in great condition. When you play here, there are no houses on the property, no roads, no distracting noises or sights. You can really focus on golf - and get absorbed in a real golf world.
Good Golf Venue
Course is nice and in good shape. Greens are very nice but a bit slow. Facility is top shelf and well maintained.
Challenging, but manageble.
We are currently 14-20 handicap's (my wife and I) and playing from the green/ black tee's was enjoyable. We did not find the staff to be very welcoming or friendly, might have caught them on a bad day. Value of $35 or under for a round is fair. We actually paid $39 which compared to other courses was high for what you get. (No GPS, not the newest carts, no towels, ice and water, scorecard and hole description and design) etc. We have played the entire RTJ Golf Trail in Alabama and actually found several of them to be greater in challenge and more scenic.
Nice Track
I've play Pine Barrens at least 10 or 12 times. It's a nice layout, with a few quirky holes. Condition is usually excellent, but the greens have been ridiculously slow the last 3 times I've played it. So slow, that I'm not going back until the situation improves. If I had to guess, they were running about 7-7.5 ... much too slow for a quality golf course.
Great Woods is a fabulous facility, with awful staff. From the Pro Shop, to the restaurant to the Cart Dept., they're all surly, unfriendly and in my mind, shouldn't be in the customer service business. It's been like this at World Woods since I started playing there 5 years ago.
It's a shame that a facility as good as World Woods, can't seem to hire a decent staff.
Best value in Florida
The Pine Barrons was beautiful with wonderful scenery. The course was in great condition, very few weeds or patchy spot. They had just overseeded the greens which made putting difficult, but it was necessary to do so for the season. It was hilly which is very untypical for a FL course. And it is definately the best value in FL, with TPC Sawgrass being $320 a round.
Course is tough, bring your A game, in very good condition
As a 13 handicap, used to be a 10, this course is demanding from the white tees. I played it when it had just been overseeded and it was cart path only but it was 22 bucks on GolfNow. Cart path only for anymore than that would have been a bad deal because it is hilly, lots of bunkers/waste areas and tough to get around. Great course, but some of the par 5s were a bit tricked up and in my opinion not well designed. It is difficult to get to but worth the play if you are a good golfer. I would not recommend this course to a high handicapper! Course conditions were very good - greens because of overseeding were too slow but the putting green was not overseeded and it was nice and speedy, if they had all been like that then it would have been a whole lot better! I am glad to have had the experience once and would have enjoyed it much more if it hadn't been cart path only. Even still Pine Barrens is definitely a tough test unless your tee ball is consistently straight and 225-250 yards and all the rest of your clubs are working respectively and that's from the white tees. If you want more you better be able to hit it long! Pace of play was good for a course like this. Never had to wait a shot but I'd say play as a twosome may have been different. The other course is about 8 shots easier. Play time was 4.5 hours for our foursome cat path only. I would say it was designed like Pine Valley, NJ, but not as perfect of course.
Great layout...showing some wear...super staff
Great course as far as design. Yes, it is in the middle of nowhere so plan some driving time unless you live or stay there. It is showing some stress from the recession and "survival of the fittest" golf situation in Florida. Traps are rough around edges, clubhouse could use some paint inside, some of the cart paths are cracked and teeth rattlers, but very much worth the low greens we paid through Golfnow.
Staff, starter were great. Ranger was seen and not heard...great beverage folks in the clubhouse and on the course. Good pace of until last couple of holes...no problem. Greens thick and not too fast. Green tees plenty for me (7 hcp) at 6300 yds. Spouse played forward tees and thought they were fair and well positioned. She loved the course and broke 90.
great course
this is a great course very well kept would play again
Fun but Tough
This is a very scenic course, with difficult and contoured greens and lots of waste areas. There are significant elevation changes and it's difficult to figure out the routing as a first-timer. At $50, I felt it was a great value, but I did not think it was in the Sawgrass/PGA National category in terms of maintenance.
Slow play dominates
Everyone in the world comes to play Pine Barrens. Many of them cannot even hit a golf ball in the air, yet they are out there attempting to "play golf" on one of the most challenging golf courses in Florida. What this does is make for extremely
S-L-O-W play at all times on Pine Barrens.
The course itself was in O.K. condition. The greens are really hard and hollow sounding. There are minimal ball marks on the greens witha solid approach shot and the ball somewhat stops. I was not able to backup a shot into the green. When the ball hits the green, you're then at the mercy of the undulations as the ball starts wandering. I have a 6 handicap, so adjust accordingly.
If you're expecting to play this course in four hours or less, it will not happen, and that is an assessment made from over 10 years coming out to World Woods to play golf.
Exceptional, all the way around
World Woods Pine Barrens says it all. Great layout, great conditions, challenging quick greens, but fair, especially the back 9 holes...perfect day. With all the rain this area has had. the course was immaculate with no signs of wet conditions in the fairways, greens, or bunkers. A pleasure to play and exceptional course with exceptional conditions, especially after the past few rounds at Northdale (5+ hours slow), Saddlebrook (cart paths only/wet), and Lake Bernadette (under water/fairways).
Great course for the money
Very challenging course, especially the greens. I've played here many times and it's still in the great condition that I've come to expect. If you've never played here, you need to.
