About
Editor's Note: Course closed and redesigned as Cabot Citrus Farms.
The Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club is one of two championship golf courses at the club. Named after the numerous pine trees that cover the course especially along the fairways, it feels far removed from the Florida coasts. Tom Fazio designed the course and it is considered not only some of his best work, but one of the best courses in the state. It is a tight golf course that is notorious for its vast waste areas and bunkers. Although it has a modest length of 7,259 yards, there is plenty of length within the layout with many of the par 4s stretching past 400 yards. There are two small lakes that come into play. The fourth hole is one of the most well known, and most photographed, in the state. It is a par 5 with a treacherous waste area dominating the right side all the way to the green.

World Woods is #1 in the region !! Photo submitted by webbknight on 09/21/2012
most enjoyable course I have ever played.
There is a reason this is a top 100 golf course in the US. Great layout that makes you choose different ways to play course, excellent condition. and undulating greens that make your putts roll all over the place. Plus the views of each hole are a memory in themselves. Some daunting, some beautiful, others just make you wonder how they could have ever come to be. This is a must play for any golfer and at the price right now, you have to take advantage.
Expected more but was a let down
Played Pine Barrens - there were bunkers with water in them. Fairways and green sides were spotty with weeds. Greens were aerated with sands still visible. The person checked us in was not very friendly. We arrived a little early and she made us waited to get out even though there wasn't anybody on the course. The lady at the restaurant was also unfriendly and did not say thanks when we paid and tipped her. Overall, horrible experience.....
Not for a novice!
Tight fairways, undulating fairways and greens and LOTS of sand. Requires properly placed shots otherwise you will spend all day in trouble but a fun course nonetheless.
Nice Course
Have now played both - Rolling Oaks is a much better test if you like to play from the tips.
Opens with a couple of tough holes, then is pretty easy going from there.
Played by myself without a scorecard, so had to rely on line of site and guestimation, but got it done in 81 - even though I lost two balls due to misclubbing.
Greens are very undulating - rolled pretty true. A little crispy - I was the last one out for the day - need to prune a couple of trees that hang in the way of the yellow tournament tees. I am not Bubba and can't bend it 30 yards - at least on purpose...
Overall, great value at both courses - I always look at World Woods on Golfnow - one of the best values you will find!
Best Public Course in Florida, nothing more to say
Pine Barrens is a great golf course, there really isn't anything else to say.
When GolfNow offers a rate at 50% off the standard twilight offseason rate of $30, which it did yesterday, the only thought is how quickly can I click the reservation icon.
extremely well maintained
I had not played Pine Barrens for over 10 years and was extremely pleased with the experience and conditions. The value in booking through Golf Now.com was tremendous. I will bring my out of state guests in October to play here. I know they will enjoy the beauty and natural environment that this course offers.
Best Course i have played in Florida
This course is challenging, beautiful and very well maintained.
One of the best in Tampa
The course was in great shape, and truly one of the best values for the money
Worth the 1:20 minute Drive Every time
I finally had a day off I could drive up to Worlds Woods. With my wife expecting our second I had to go and get a round in before its done with Golf:)Sure!! Invited a co worker for a round and now he is hooked. What a wonderful place to get away and play a Top Notch Course. I mean Top Notch!!!!! They are currently getting ready for peak season and doing lots of manicuring so it was loud but who cares, it is the best course I have ever played hands down!!! Next time I get to sneak away guess where I am going. Yup Pine Barrens!!! The Ranger Jim was a outstanding guy!!!!!
One of the most visually interesting and challenging courses i've ever played.
Pine Barrens at World Woods is the finest tracks I have ever seen. Bar none !
Visually intimidating, deceptive, beautifully creative design, carved into a rolling and undulating natural setting, with no houses
Greens were massive and undulating on every hole, and true (not too fast thankfully.) and 40-90ft putts were common, as were three putts, Accuracy and imagination is demanded on every approach shot.
Large wide fairways and alternative fairways are features that make the player consider risk and reward, on many holes.
Staff was amazing and 1st class all the way.
"Do not miss" it if you are in the Tampa Area !
Beautiful layout.
Absolutely one of my favorites. If you love being outdoors, surrounded by beautiful pines, this course if for you. Loved everything about it. Came out, played on my birthday and shot the round of my life. With 4 different tee boxes to choose from, anybody, no matter what skill level you are, will be able to enjoy this course. Will be coming back very soon!
Simply a top notch Golf Course
There is not much to say. This is a top notch Golf Course, fantastic layout, pristine condition, friendly staff. I played this course many times over the years and unless they are doing work on it (which they have to) it's always in amazing condition.
There is nothing to add, this is for the money the best place in the world to play an amazing Golf Course.
Triple A in all regards!
The course was well designed and maintained
World of Woods golf was a great time, the staff did an awesome job. The ranger keep the pace to a max even when their was a few slow groups. The grounds keepers had the course in great shape I just wish I had paid more attention that the greens were under repair but they were still running ok.it was all still worth the 11/2 hr drive. I would recommend this course to anyone it was very challenging but manageable. The cart lady was very friendly all though she had two course to take care off, still was all good.
Not as good a price do to aereated greens, didn't know it at time of reservation. Course was in great shape & greens were still fast but bumpy.
Still enjoyed the chalange & course, would definately go back!
Awesome layout
Great bargain for $20 Aerification rate, although greens were punched and sanded, I enjoyed the course
Nice layout in a beautiful setting
This was a chance to take my 10 year old son to a course that is not surrounded by houses and condos. An enjoyable round at a fair price. With no yardage book though, it was tough to score well without course knowledge.
Pine Barrens is a Great Track!
I like to play the Pine Barrens course whenever I can.
Good Overall Experience
Clubhouse: Small and somewhat unremarkable. The table next to ours had difficulty getting their food, as there seemed to be confusion in the kitchen. Also the grill closes at 4:00pm.
On-course amenities: Their was a roving drinks cart, but somehow the driver never managed to make it to our group. It was later in the afternoon, and we did see her twice, but she drove by in the distance without stopping.
Course. The MANY waste bunkers make for a visually appealing landscape. Unfortunately there were not true sand traps (with soft, powdery sand) at all on the course. ALL bunkers are waste bunkers where you can ground the club...even by the greens. It would have been nice to have actual sand traps by the greens, with waste bunkers in the fairways only.
Condition. I assume, due to the very rainy summer, that there's not been an opportunity to condition the waste bunkers as most had significant erosion, and were in need of maintenance. The greens were in good condition, as were the tees and fairways.
Overall, a good golfing experience...but not a five-star level.
rained thee whole time but the water didnt slow the greens down one bit and thefairways didnt imbed
great value great people and an awesome golf course great place to practice and play where else can you play 2 practice holes practice putting and then play 18 holes
Good but not great.
I have been playing World Woods shortly after they opened.
They had a shack for a pro shop and a tent with picnic tables where you got a grilled burger with chips. But both courses were great, greens that looked like pool tables, double cut checker board fairways and a great lay out.
Now the course conditions have slipped considerably. I always wondered how World Woods could stay afloat financially due to its location and lack of accommodations. It needs an infusion of cash to get it back into better condition. The greens were the most disappointing.
