Greens lightly sanded.
Greens had been lightly sanded. Very bumpy and on the soft side. The place is working to bring it back to a better shape, and so there are areas that have very thick rough and good grass in fairways, but other areas are absolutely awful, the typical dried out, crusty, dried mud areas. I don’t understand why they can’t punch and sand and seed the areas that are dried out mud, to bring them back to the thick grass like they have done in many good areas around the greens and the trees and bunker edges.
It’s just a couple days a month is all they would need to do that.
Give it a couple more weeks for the sand to settle down on the greens, they should be in great shape then, as they have seemingly figured out what was wrong with them.
Marshall/ Staff Training on Courtesy, Decorum, and Customer Service
First time visitor.
The Marshall (female) on duty 7/26/21 approached me in her cart, and with out even a cordial greeting (from someone who "represents" the course)... Hi... good afternoon...Hello and welcome....NOTHING.... just starts harping about, and may I say with little attitude, that our group was slow and there were four (4) holes in front of us open and we had to catch up, and slow play, etc.
We were not behind any group in front of us because when we teed off at 11:50 there WERE no players/groups in front us us... WHATSOEVER...all day! Furthermore, our play was not slow as the three of us kept the ball pretty much in play...so strike 2 on her part. I also, if needed, have the name and number of our 3d who can confirm what I am writing to you. (While you may have it on your TEE Sheet for the day, I'll be happy to forward if desired.)
Next, at the turn, and being a first timer couldn't find the snack shop. I was circling the building and came upon a young man (cart worker) and as I approached him asked "excuse me, which way to the snack bar?" and he looked at me like I was an alien (or stupid?), then pointed the direction up the ramp. I said "thank you" and as I walked by to head toward snack bar, mentioned to him "it was my first time here and I didn't know. You looked at me like I was an alien".
It should be remembered by staff, or course representatives... at EVERY level, the importance of customer service. Approaching, or dealing with others with some degree of decorum, and respect... then go from there when things go awry. A greeting would've been nice from Ms."Marshall" before she started griping about something she obviously didn't either check, or ask about...just approach in cart and start right in! Ugly representation for a nice course. I Marshalled roughly 5 years (Loma Santa Fe in Solana Beach), understand the trials and tribulations of Marshalling. I also understand representing a course I work or volunteer, and decorum and dealing with the public. And for Mr. cart worker, a simple..."oh that way, sir/m'am" (optional) with something resembling a "I'm happy to have a job, and to represent this course... kind of smile." THOSE are the kind of little things that get GREAT reviews.
Fluffy
I like the layout of the course. However, the best way to describe the greens are fluffy. And bumpy. I do not remember the last time I played the scores for the greens were in good shape, It’s almost like they’ve never been rolled. The fairways are in decent shape but they’re also a very fluffy the ball does not roll much. The rough is long and very punishing.
A True LA Muni Goat Track
As long as your expectations for an LA muni are low, your experience will be marginally average. This is a real goat track. Super overgrown roughs, long grown grass fairways and plenty of slow, choppy greens. I love a cheap beer, low dollar muni as much as the next guy but this isn't any better than Links At Victoria (better known as Victoria Weeds). Tee times are an awful struggle to get these days so if you find yourself playing C Washington, this will be the course to use the old equipment, enjoy the beer (buy in advance at bar, if open... no beer cart) and 18 marginal holes with your buddies.
Early Morning Round at Chester W.
Course was in fair condition. It appeared the greens had been punched recently and had not been cut yet, otherwise course was in fair/average condition. Fairways were nice. Tee boxes cut but clippings left. Rough was low but challenging nonetheless. Pace of play was good, finishing a round (foursome) in less than 4 1/2 hours. Starter and ambassadors were friendly and personable as always. Cart was clean and in good condition. Overall, nice round of golf on a nice muni.
same old Chester
As usual the greens were slow and bumpy. Don't know what their greens mowing schedule is but it's not often enough.
Fairways were long and wet. No roll out on a properly hit drive. Again the mow the the fricking greens and fairways daily for crying out loud.
I came here as as last resort. About the only course I could get a tee time through Golf Now. And this is why. The course maintenance is horrible.
It will be a long time before I come back to this dog track.
