Located in the desert just north of Phoenix and Scottsdale, the golf course at Quintero Golf Club is a challenge but with up to as many as nine tees per hole, it can accommodate golfers of all different abilities and handicaps. The rolling, desert terrain of the course features dramatic elevation changes for interesting play. The golf course's design has wide fairways and plenty of water hazards and sand bunkers. The most difficult hole is the par-5 8th hole, which plays uphill with three large bunkers alongside the right side of the lay-up area. Another difficult but noteworthy hole is Quintero Golf Club's third, which has a scenic lake to the left that sometimes tricks golfers into playing close to it with their tee shot for an easier second shot to the green.

Spectacular Course-MUST PLAY for Phoenix

Quite simply this is one of the most beautiful courses I have ever had the pleasure to play. It helped that the area had enough rain this year and recently to cause basically the entire desert around the course to go into bloom which made it truly amazing visually. But generally the setting for the course, essentially isolated going up down and through valleys in the desert northwest of Phoenix in a way that makes the course look truly isolated and stunning visually. The hole layouts are also interesting and no two holes really are the same. Would be hard to pick out a signature hole, as almost all of the holes would be a signature hole on other courses. The par 3's are particularly strong, with many having very elevated tee boxes with commanding vistas, causing holes to play roughly two clubs shorter than distance marked. One par 5 on the back offers the ultimate risk reward, allowing the golfer confident in their driver game to cut the corner to the second fairway and open up a good chance to reach the green in two and set up an eagle. The landing areas are generally reasonable in size if playing the right tee boxes for your game, it certainly there is not a ton of room off the fairways before you are in the desert. Most of the course is out in front of you without much hidden to provide unwelcome surprises on what you may think of as good shots (as is the case on many other courses on this area which are very much target golf). Only complaint is that people do not fix their ballmarks on the greens which leaves them fairly badly marked up in places. That is not the courses fault, it is the golfers not doing the right thing. Also golfers could be better about replacing and/or filling their divots. The scenery and the wildlife certainly make even a mediocre day of golf here really pretty great. We saw more wildlife than I will bore you with, including groups of wild burros, packs of paccaries (a pig family animal), rabbits, birds of all types, and so much more.

So overall, if you are only going to get to play one course in the Phoenix area, in my opinion this is the one to play. It is a bit of a drive depending on what part of town you come from, but it is so worth the drive. The clubhouse/pro shop/restaurant isn't fancy or large, but the course is fantastic and the staff are super nice and helpful. I have played Troon North, Wickenberg Ranch, Estrella, and many other Troon courses along with many of the other best courses in the area, and this course is still better in all respects than those in terms of pure golf.

Value versus pace

I have played here 3 times All 3 times a marshall as come while on holes 14-15 and warned of pace! This time the group behind us were 2 holes behind so we had no pressure! Why warn us??? For the money you pay and the design of the course tee times should be 15 minutes apart not 10! Every hole you can’t drive your cart within 50 yards of the greens so shots left short require you to park the cart walk out chip on putt then walk back to the cart! Its a championship style course which played for a money game requires a 5 hour round or that much to just really enjoy it

Beautiful Views

Excellent layout, great views, impeccable greens and fairways BUT, the bunkers, especially green side are almost unplayable. They have very little sand in them and are very deep making it almost impossible to land the ball and stop it on many of the greens.

For the high price of green fees, this was a rel let down for our group.

You need to play this course

This course is simply stunning, I have never played such a beautiful course. The amenities are very average but it really doesn’t matter because the course is really that good. I would highly suggest going out of your way to play here, its worth all the hype and praise.

Rick B

I thoroughly enjoy playing Quintero! It’s an outstanding layout and have generally found it to be in good playing condition.

On this occasion the greens were not ideal with a great many dead spots from hundreds of ball marks. The greens were rolled to a smooth finish lacking in grass, leaving a mostly dirt/sand finish. They were of a good speed but not of good quality considering the high priced green fees.

We waited behind the group ahead of us numerous times but were not upset…on the back nine the ranger, having spoke with that group and told us they would be getting back in line with the group ahead and to keep up with them. Then at the end of the next hole told us to “tighten-it-up” with the group ahead of us again. Two holes later we had three groups on one hole. Not impressed with the course management by the ranger!

I still recommend Quintero; great course but not a great day when we played it last.

Great Golf Course / Demeaning Staff

I have been playing this excellent course every time I visit Phoenix for over 15 years. Any time I talk about golf in the Valley I always expound on your well designed and excellently maintained facility ( even though I’m yet to break 90).

Yesterday I was scheduled to tee off at 10:07 with a threesome as a single. When I arrived at the practice tee you starter asked if I would might moving up to 9:36 with a father and daughter from Canada. I recognized the issues presented to him putting a twosome out on the busy day and immediately agreed.

The folks were very pleasant with the daughter being quite athletic and the father at age 77 being less so with limited mobility. We started out at what I considered a useful pace. On hole five my playing partner experienced trap difficulties so I putted out while they extricated themselves from the bunker in front of the green.

As I was walking off the green, your marshall Darren drove up at started berating our group for slow play. His first comment was that we were holding up the entire course. I thought this was strange because looking back I could see that the group behind us was just walking onto the tee.

I mentioned this to Darren and he quickly reminded me that we should be looking at the group in front of us which every experienced golfer knows. This comment did not bother me but it visibly flustered my playing partners. Darren continued with a short lecture on tips to play faster and also offered to ride along with us and take traps if we would like. I declined stating that we would just try to avoid them.

We arrived on the 6th tee to see Darren parked behind the green waving his arms in a circular fashion continuously apparently in an effort to have us speed up. After we all rushed through our tee shots and drove down to the green, Darren waved me over.

Darren proceed to tell me that he didn’t like my attitude concerning his offer to take traps. He stated the marshalls were there to help and he would like more cooperation from me.

He then proceeded to to watch us finish the hole like a warden watching prison and sat the as we walked off the green to #7. When we reached #7 we found the threesome in front of of us just driving up to the green after hitting their second ( or multiple) shots.

My playing partners were anxious and confused and it showed in their results. I was furious but holding my emotions as best I could.

Darren first lied to us about our group holding up the course. We ending up following the threesome of young men in front waiting on every tee for the remainder of the round.

Darren’s approach to our group was condescending and insulting. Having assessed our group for 30 seconds, he made generalizations about good speedy play practices. He could have just said he would like us to sped up a little rather than his demeaning comments.

Darren’s criticism of me for my attitude concerning his remarks would have been unacceptable if I had had and attitude. It was flabbergasting and in infuriating since I had not said anything to him at all.

Out group could talk about nothing else that Darren for the remainder of the front nine. As we waited on the 10th tee for the group in front of, I call the pro shop and asked to speak with what turned out to be Mark. He agreed to talk to me after the round.

Our discussion with Mark involved him telling us about your pace of play straight while we tried to explain to him how Darren turned a once in a lifetime experience into a trip to the local muni. When I asked for some kind of compensation, he responded that he could give us a 6 hole voucher. A voucher was of limited use to us since it would be many months or never until it would be used.

He said that we really didn’t deserve anything because we finished our round. Yes, because Darren ruined our round on the 6th hole. I’m still looking forward to breaking 90 on your great golf course but I will have trouble scheduling it again if people like Darren are still to be encountered.

Disappointing Experience

Our foursome was in town for a golf trip and we are avid golfers and were blown away with the beauty of this course. The layout along with the shape of the fairways and greens were just awesome. Everyone in the clubhouse along with the starters were very nice. We started on time and was keeping pace with the group in front only waiting a little. We waited on the picturesque #6 for at least 10 minutes before we could hit. Going to #7 we started getting hassled by marshals saying our pace of play wasn't acceptable and we should consider skipping holes to allow the groups behind us to finish. We never saw anyone behind us all day. The older gray headed marshal also needs to learn some tact because he was a real piece of work. The marshals totally ruined what would have been a fantastic day. I can't recommend this course for paying almost $400 and getting rushed for no reason. We finished almost an hour before dark and no groups were ever spotted playing behind us. I've never been treated like this and won't be back.

Beautiful challenging course

This course is in great condition. The greens are very firm and fast. They are very hard to make a putt on. The breaks are subtle and if you miss by a little you can roll a long ways away. The course is picturesque. You need your A game. Once we moved up to the shorter tees it was easier and more fun to play. We got a discount. I wouldn't pay full price to play there.

A Must Play if You Can Afford It

A true gem though you’ll need to drive a while to get there. Awesome test of golf with spectacular par threes. Fairways are generous but many elevated greens with tricky slopes and speed make scoring difficult. Every hole is unique and there are definitely some great photo ops. If you have the means it should be played as it is one of the best in the area. Troon card can save you some money. Did not have my best day, but I’ll probably need to take another shot at this tough course next year.
