Carved from a forest of pines and winding through wetlands and lagoons, St. Johns Golf & Country Club offers a scenic 18-hole round located between St. Augustine and Jacksonville. The course features tree-lined fairways and large, fast greens. There is also the occasional two-tiered green to look out for. Water hazards come into play throughout and there are several well-placed bunkers. Depending on how the wind is blowing, the course can range from being gentle to very demanding. Six sets of tees make the course accessible to players of all skill levels. In addition to the course, St. Johns Golf & Country Club also offers extensive practice facilities including a 10,000 sq. foot putting green, chipping green, and a double-sided driving range.

Two different grasses growing in greens

The greens are fast which I love but to bumpy because of the two different grasses growing in the greens. For the price there are way to many bare spots where grass should be around the course.

Don't waste your time or money

I'll preface this review by saying I'd first played this course one time in 2023. Had I remembered the course in greater detail I would have never booked it again. It's a combination of gimmicky design and moderate to poor conditions. First....the gimmicks: Rectangular greens and sand traps. You read that right....greens and traps that are square to rectangular. The novelty of that might be interesting for a hole or two, but every hole and it gets old quick. Why does it get old? Because literally every trap on the course is at grade with a berm at the side that faces the green. Boring. There are greens that will remind you of food platters, with each of the four corners and sides exactly the same slope for their entire length.

Next....the conditions. The fairways...and I mean ALL the fairways...are hardpan with grass cut so short even a topped tee shot will run 175 yards. Forget about sticking the flag or even landing ON the greens with most approaches. This course is a bump and run (and if you are not careful, a run and run and run and run...you get the idea) track. Approach shot of 180? Hit 150 and you should roll the rest of the way. Some holes could use curbs the length of the fairway to make the Putt-Putt for Adults experience a bit more authentic. Maybe throw in a few windmills to putt through for some visuals.

Many apologies....Indeed I mistakenly placed my review under the wrong course. If there was a way to delete my initial post, I would.

Hi, BernDiggler!

It seems the course you are describing is St. Johns Golf Club in Elkton, FL, not St. Johns Golf & Country Club in St. Augustine, FL off CR 210.

Would you kindly, please, modify your review to the appropriate course?

We hope you have an opportunity to visit us in the near future!

Potential to be great

First time at course. This course still has some winter pains to correct. But the course itself and the layout was excellent. The course was very dry and your ball rolled a LONG way. Sometimes good and sometimes bad. Greens were rough in some spots but overall good for this time of year. Look forward to playing again when conditions improve. But I would play this again regardless.

St. John’s Golf and Country Club

The greens are a complete disaster! All dirt and virtually no grass. Basically unplayable. We couldn’t figure out if they were dead or dormant or had some disease. The course should inform players about the state of the greens before they book here. We wouldn’t play here again if the greens aren’t repaired. The rest of the track is decent and the staff were friendly.

Hello and thank you for visiting St. Johns recently! Our greens are emerging from dormancy with the spring temperatures, and their vibrant color returns at the same time.

We would love the opportunity to talk with you in more detail about your recent round and the course! Would you please connect with our GM by emailing info@stjohnsgolf.com? We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Are you sure you are reviewing the correct course? The greens were tidy a few day ago. Plan on being back this week

Disappointed

Normally, I would highly recommend this course to a friend, but not at this time. This is one of the best courses I’ve played. Fairways and greens have always been in pristine condition EXCEPT today. What a shock it was when I started playing expecting it to be like it usually is, only to be so disappointed. The fairways were not in great condition and the greens were aerated loaded with sand looked like they had disease. Whoever the groundskeepers is now must be different than before, because it went from an A course to a C in my opinion.

Great course but...

Off the tee to fringe of green course was great, however, greens looked like they were just punched and sanded which dropped the overall rating. Definitely want to come back but maybe need to let it be known before spending the money that the greens were being aerated or maybe discount the price a little. All in all for this round give it a 4 out of 5.

Local Traveler

I had a hot deal that put me back in the realm of my "normal" rates. I have always enjoyed the difficulty this course brings. It can be humbling on a windy day. Most fairways are cuddled by hills that can be very unforgiving if you miss them. Greens were recently punched, but they are compact enough that the holes don't have much affect on the roll. Still a great course with amenities for the money in the area.

- GPS and chargers on carts

- practice areas: range, short game, putting green
