Dead green Photo submitted by bandjwright on 09/05/2017
It's all about the greens
The place has potential, but until the greens have some grass on them I won't be back, even for $25.
Loved the layout but they have lost their greens
I play this course several times a year because I love the layout without the neighborhood feel of some courses in my area. The course has improved over the last year and i played here a couple of months ago and it was coming along nicely. I was disappointed at the end of the first hole to see the condition of the green, they have lost their greens and have aerated to try and recover them. I do love this course and will be checking the reviews and I will be back when the greens are more playable.
Good
Good time good and very good
country course
Had a great time, greens are very good, bunkers had raked sand. tee some grass, fair ways have a few thin spots but playable. Not a country club but just a good out in the country type course.
Father's Day Outing
Played this course for first time on Father's Day even though it's only 20 minutes from my home. Booked a Hot Deal through Golf Now and took my son. Loved the course, layout was perfect for our game. Got some helpful tips from some regulars who play there about how the ball funnels on certain holes and used it to our advantage. Greens were in perfect shape, best of all the local courses we've played this year. Fairways had a few thin spots but nothing major. Probably making this our go to course for playing.
nice greens
We have played here a few times and the last time it was a little rough. The course and the cart path were well worn. So, We got a good hot deal and drove up 85 to Homer. Very pleasantly surprised. The cart path has been repaired, the course was in very good shape. The fairways were just a little thin in places but the greens were the best I have played on in a while. Every one of them were completely filled in and full. I like them just a wee bit faster but they said they were running about 9.5 to 10. I adjusted to the speed rather quickly and all were true rolls. The bunkers are something other than traditional sand and are very playable. I will go again even a full price.
Great Value
Greens were in GREAT shape!! This course is a great value for the price. The course is very playable from any set of tees and has some nice holes. Not too easy, not too hard. Plenty of birdie holes, but some that you can make a big number on if you're not careful. Well worth the drive.
Chimney Oaks Homer Ga.
Played mid January. Course was in very good shape. Especially the bent grass greens. I especially enjoyed the layout on the back nine. Lots of undulation but not overly steep.
Close the course
They should not charge people to play this course. Thank goodness I only paid $10 through golfnow.com. The greens were the absolute worse I have ever played. They were also working on the cart paths, and it would beatty out and the cart to death around the tees when you couldn't get off the path. They also so not sell beer, so you better bring your own. Actually, you should go somewhere else. Do not pay over $15 to play here.
potential squandered
The land that this course is on has so much potential to be a great course but I fear the owners lack the vision or the money that bring it to fruition. Several greens were deeply scarred and had more weeds and dirty spots than grass. The cat paths were being jackhammerd up for replacement on many holes. Many areas, you had to drive the cart right next to tee boxes and greens causing further damage to large areas of turf throughout the course. Bone jarring and club rattling painful in many spots. The clubhouses computer was down when I arrived and the attendant had no record of my tee time or how much I owed. Told me it had been down for a couple of weeks. Large area of woods between holes 3-7 has been cleared some, but is aesthetically unappealing. It had the appearance of tornado damage instead of clearing for beautification. Again I say the potential for having a beautiful facility is there but in my opinion it looks like the land, in its current state, would be better suited for a hunting camp. If you're looking for a place to beat balls instead of the driving range and don't particularly care about scoring, then chimney oaks would scratch that itch.
Construction
Cart paths are under reconstruction on front 9. Greens in poor condition. I played for 10 dollars so was a little suspicious now I know why.
Under Maintenance
Chimney Oaks is under maintenance, and needs a professional greens keeper. It appears that whoever is taking care of the course doesn't know basic weed, and fire ant control. The cart path is dug up and you need a 4 wheel drive to get around the front nine. The casher's computer monitor is out and has been for 2 weeks. So if you pay online bring proof. Over 1/2 the greens are diseases, or have weeds growing on them. Again, nothing a true greens keeper could not resolve.
It's a shame this would be a great course with the right attention.
Course not in top conditions
I play this course often and always enjoy playing there. The layout is interesting with a variety of holes. The greens are not in good condition because of a lot of trash grasses on the greens. Lot of effort to correct the problem, but it will take time.
Fairways are firm and fast. Good deals are usually available on Golf Now.
Hidden Treasure
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to play. The greens are very true but undulate all over. Pin placement was very challenging. Absolutely love this place!!! Great views throughout. Super friendly staff!! I felt like I was a long standing member.
Absolutely horrible!!
Thank goodness I got the golfnow deal of the day, or I would've been furious. We've played this course before & enjoyed the layout. The fairway grass was mostly dead. The Bermuda greens had patches of deadness in ea green. We had to move our ball many times to have grass to putt. Trees had been removed on a lot of the holes & higher grass & weeds were encroaching the fairway. Half of the cart paths are undrivable due to massive ruts or the path has been removed. Traps were mostly pebbled with no sand-several had grass growing in the sand. The clubhouse is falling down in the back, so I was very careful using the ladies facilities. Very little water on the course & a container had mold growing on the handle. While this is an interesting layout-never again!! Even as The deal of the day it was overpriced
Chimney Oaks
Very playable course. I played with my 27 and 24 year old sons and we had a very good competitive round. The only negative was the hot weather. In spite of the heat we had a good time. The fairways and greens were in fairly good shape. The main improvement needed at the course is the cart paths. Can't wait to play again, especially in the fall.
Hot day!
Need a good stop wedge. Seemed all the flags were protected by a close sand trap or 2. But we had a great time. Been Years since I played here and didn't remember the course. Next time will be easier as I now have a clue. lol And yes the course is worth the return visit. You'll enjoy it (except for that yellow hornet that kept chasing me on one of the back par 3's).
Excellent Value
Big positives - Nice greens, tee boxes, and sand traps. No negatives, the fairways have good grass coverage, but are really dry and hard. that made it tough to hit down into the ball and make a divot. Still a fun course with a good layout that most golfers will enjoy!
Making a comeback
We initially played this course as Scales Creek and a few times as Hammers Glen...1st time back in several years...under new ownership and another new name.
Conditions...Tee, fairways, bunkers were good to playable...fairways being playable...they were grassed but a tad thin, the trade off was a lot of roll out so not a complaint.
Greens are still bent grass, and cosmetically they look much faster than they are...we cursed the greens at times on long putts, but they were consistently slow, at some point the golfer has to adjust...rolled smooth on putts inside 10'...nice surface...once they're able to cut them down they will have the same fire as the old Scales Creek layout.
The layout is still the same some 6 yrs later...72/6365/70.5/125 blue.
The front 9 is more rolling with some short holes that have blind landing areas...they have cleared out a lot of trees on this side, but you're still advised to play these holes conservatively to the top of the landing area and you're rewarded with a short iron and a great look at most hole locations...get too aggressive and you can make dbl.
The back is slightly more open...starts with a wide open par 4...the par 3s are all interesting and the 17th signature hole...unless you play mountain golf a lot, you don't see that too often...worth the drive up.
Fun course, very playable. You can see money the new owners are putting into it...There's a good chance we'll get back up by fall.
Best condition the course have ever been in!
The new ownership and management has really turned this course into a great one. The greens are in great shape and with the removal of a lot of trees it really opens up the course. My favorite hole is the downhill #17 par 3.
I just read some of the previous comments. Greens appear to be bent grass now. All traps are full of a unique sand I've never played before but they are a lot of fun to play out of. The cart paths are being rebuilt as we speak. They were working on them when we were there. I saw no signs of encroaching weeds.
The only thing I would change there is wherever there are creeks I would clear out the overgrowth all the way down to the creek so that the creek would be visible along the fairways. I would even volunteer to do this for some free golf!!
