David L. Baker Memorial Golf
About
The David L. Baker Golf Course is an affordable public course located in Fountain Valley. It has an approachable layout that is versatile enough to appeal to a range of different skill levels. No two holes are alike but all of the greens and fairways share the same excellent conditions. Water has a prominent presence on this executive golf course with lakes and ponds running alongside many of the holes. The sloped greens are lightning fast and the fairways are tightly manicured. Beside the greens lurk treacherous sand traps that are just waiting to swallow errant shots. Although there are some tricky holes, the layout is gentle enough for beginners. It is an enjoyable and affordable round that offers excellent short game practice, no matter what skill level.

Great fee for the course
Course is always challenging even though there is no par 5.
David L. Baker
Played David L. Baker Monday 03/12/2018, with a scheduled tee time of 11:30. We ended up getting out at 11 as a twosome behind a twosome behind a pair of foursomes.
My last experience with the course a regular on my rota had been horrible, as it was a swamp, and mud pit, despite the absence of any recent rain. Today found the course in good winter condition. Pro shop staff were friendly and helpful.
The course seems to showing signs of financial weakness. I would say that at full 3/4ths of the mats on the driving range feature rips and tears. I was fortunate enough to find one of the few intact, but with a slight divot from use. Restroom needed attention, as did the porta johns on the back nine (at my age you notice this stuff). The practice green was in very good shape, however not representative of those on course in terms of cut. The practice green was cut tight, the greens on course that will punched in two weeks were a little shaggy.
The course did provide filled sand bottles at the turn for those of us that care about fixing divots.
The starter offered to get us out early which was appreciated as we were playing on a $24 Golf Now round with cart, and the time seven minutes before us had listed at $31. The round still took about 3.5 hours to play.
The cart is basic, and clean with comfortable seats., and the sand bottles were full.
My friend and I played from the blues. Most tees with the exception of #3 played back, a couple were at the tips, something I have seen at this course before. It was a very different look.
Weather was overcast, and around 70 degrees, little breeze on the front nine, slightly stronger on the back nine. Just a really nice day to get a round in before a predicted week of rain. Squirrels and ducks are in abundance, and happy to come up to you and beg. I didn’t have anything and actually had one squirrel try to block my way a couple of times well putting a paw out. If you bring food, don’t leave it lying around the cart or in an open pocket.
Tee boxes were slightly unlevel with some signs of wear, and unrepaired divots. Still very playable. Fairways were winter grass conditions with excellent coverage. Fairway rough was largely nonexistent. About three to four inches around the greens and bunkers. Bunkers looked in good condition, I wasn’t in one so can’t speak from immediate experience.
Greens were my issue for the round. Nothing wrong with greens themselves, there were a couple with minor bare spots, and most featured molted grass, but rolled well. The main issue was that they were shaggy. The practice green had been mown, but the greens on course had not, likely due to the weekends rain, and the pending punching. As mentioned the ball rolled well, but I couldn’t bring myself to hit it firm enough leaving a number of puts short.
Where my last round left me unhappy, upset, and not wanting to come back to a course I play dozens of times per year, today’s round put the course back on my map. That alone makes me happy I played here.
Tee boxes and greens in bad shape
I played because I had a fairly easy day at work and this course usually offers a good bang for the buck but even last Friday I would have stayed away. The tee boxes were under repair cutting a lot of the par 3s literally in half that I could tee off with my putter! The greens were in such bad shape because golfers here literally don't know that they have to repair their divots but there seems to be nobody stressing these things to the people that golf here. Just keep that in mind when booking a tee time here, don't expect much.
Pace of play and 19th hole
The groups were bunched too closely because there are a lot of inexperienced golfers here. The port o potty needs to be serviced.
I love the course
Even though this is an executive course it is still challenging on working on both long and short game
David Baker great golfing
Great short course. We come here often. Friendly staff, great short course to get your seasonal game on track or practice your short game. Every hole has something different to offer for improving your game.
Short Courses
Good for short and long practice. Great for a quicker game providing it is not backed up. Watch out for all the ducks, geese and squirrels.
Worse Than I Remember
Large divots in fairway and around greens, along with slow pace, makes for a long day
Baker is Baker
We played this as a foursome for an annual Christmas round. This is an "executive course" that plays to a par of 62. Par 4s are in the 250-280 yard range. There are no par 5s.
Baker attracts a lot of beginners and casual golfers. It can play slow and the conditions are far from pristine. There were ball marks all over the greens. (Though maybe the twosome we saw driving a cart across the green were trying to smooth some out). The fairways were baked out in some spots, and very wet in others.
If you are just starting out, or teaching a son or daughter to play, this is not bad. Just don't expect too much.
Hot deal from Golfnow.com!
Course greens were average. Due to the many divots found... other than that overall experience was fun and would definitely play this course again.
Slow play Wednesday
My tee time was on 11/1/17 at 12 pm. I thought I would get done with the round in 3 hours since it was on a Wednesday. The pace of play was very slow. The front 9 holes took 2 hours & 15 minutes to play. There were 1-2 groups waiting on every tee box.
Dad Miller Sunday
We play here often, last Sunday we booked a 9:00 tee time. We showed at 8:50 ready and was told we were the last tee before a junior PGA event starts at 9:30 when we got ready to start they added 3 more behind us. Well Iguess they were having a Senior couples event just ahead of us also, ended up with a 4-1/2 round nearly an hour longer than normal. The group ahead of us had 3 open holes by the end of the day.
First time
Nice course beautiful fairways, greens recently aerated but rough, still a very good course
