Buenaventura Golf Course
About
Buenaventura Golf Course originally opened in 1932 as a nine-hole course but closed in 2004 for major renovations. The course's original designer, William Bell, was consulted for the redesign. It was transformed into a more challenging course, but the 1930s design features were carefully preserved. The parkland layout may seem short at just over 6,000 yards but like many of the courses from that era, length is not as important as strategy and course management. The strategically placed bunkers have classic shapes that blend seamlessly into the natural environment as though they were carved by the river. The bunkers combined with the fast, sloping greens make the golf course a shot-maker's paradise. One of Buenaventura's most memorable holes is the par-4 13th. It is one of Bell's original designs, an interesting risk-reward opportunity with water along the right.

Ventura classic
Always love playing Buenaventura. Holes allow you to hit greens and still remain challenging. When I pulled up the course looked like Augusta. After playing I did notice some areas under repair or needing attention. I am sure they will get done. The Buffalo chicken wrap looked awesome and the Bloody Mary is the best on local courses circuit
April 2017
First time playing this course. The course from the tips is just under 6000 yds, a few sand traps and a small creek crossing a par 5 hole are the only obstacles. This is a good course to practice the irons. Maintenance repair to some of the course are still in progress however it should not interfere with play inbounds. The fairways were decent as were the greens. Pace of play was good.
Buena
Played the Blacks (5826/68.3/117) in 4.5H, matched up with Brian & Francisco. The weather was clear, in the 70's and fairly calm. Because of storm damage, the entire course is CPO for the immediate future. The course was closed for a month and just recently reopened. Some areas are still subpar, but overall the course is quite playable. They are in the process of completely resodding the entire #3 fairway, so it is currently playing as a 150 yard par 3. Lake beside 3 tee and in front of 13 green over flowed and has been drained for the time being, currently a huge muddy sink hole. There are also some damaged areas along the outer edges of holes that they have no gotten to yet, but from tee to green on most holes the course was playing fairly close to normal. I was impressed that they had resodded numerous areas of the rough on many holes. While I knew about the storm damage and really appreciated the in depth info provided when I called to make my tee time, it was disappointing to be putting on furry, bumpy greens that had been punched less than 2 weeks ago. Healing nicely, but I would have played elsewhere had I known that beforehand. To their credit, Buena is running a special for the next month because of the storm damage. Twilight rates are AD, and you got a sleeve of Pro V's if you also got a cart today. The tees were in good shape with almost all the divot damage already properly maintained. The fairways that were not resodded were mostly decent. Semi lush with almost complete coverage everywhere. The kikuyu rough is mowed down, few lost ball areas which is great for POP. Lusher closer to the fairways/greens, thinner the farther you are from the fairway. Many of the sand traps have been refilled with nice, new sand. However, a few damaged ones were basically unmarked GUR. The greens putted medium slow and were bumpy from the recent aeration. They held approach shots very well. The customer service was excellent as usual from the tee time reservation to the courteous and efficient check-in. They matched me up and got me out 45 minutes before my scheduled start time. Drink cart out making numerous rounds. No GPS on the basic carts but the sprinklers are well marked. Nice snack stand with good burgers and their drinks are good AD. Fun, shorter course that is tougher than the scorecard initially indicates because of trees, tightness and the usual 1-2 club ocean breeze. Easy course to walk, shorter, few hills, no long walks between tee boxes. No range, they only have a couple of cages to warm up in. One of the few negatives I can say about Buena is that they are one of the few non American Golf courses that allow 5somes. We teed off @ 820a on Saturday morning directly behind a 5 some. That group seemingly never even though about letting a 3some in carts play through. When they were on 16 tee and we were on 15 fairway, I could see that the group in front of them had already finished, so they were at least 3 holes behind. Recommended again in 10-14 days once the greens are back to normal.
All ground under repair
I wish I would have been able to play this course at a time when every fairway was under repair. I understand they took on a great deal of water - really though, cart path only, most fairways with major adverse conditions and a few par 4's turned par 3's with mats to hit off of...not the best experience. The staff let us know the deal when we checked in. I think it would have been better of Golf Now posted a 'Beware' notice. Had we known it was in such bad condition right now, we would have most definitely played someplace else in the area. I'll try it again...next year.
Boring course
The fairways and greens are in excellent condition and well maintained. However, there is no challenge to this boring course. The course lacks character. Except for a few trees, there is no penalty for missing the wide fairways. It's a good course for beginners..
Windy Hot deal
Was in the area and thought I squeeze in a round. It's was a VERY windy day but you can't fault the course for that. There are a lot of sand traps and some water that makes this course a little interesting. Other than that, it struck me as a very "municipal" feeling golf course. Pretty flat and straight ahead. The greens, however, were in FANTASTIC shape.
This course was in great shape
Good course ran out of time
Good course
Nice ocean breeze kept it cool on a hot day everywhere else in Ventura. Greens make this course tough. Otherwise fairly easy scoring course.
Staff sre so kind
Green is very challengeable and well maintained
Well Worth My Money
The course was in great shape. Check-in was quick and easy. The weather was pleasant. I was put in with a threesome who knew the course well and they were great guys to play with. All this plus the golfnow price made this a real bargain. Though there is no driving range, there is one at Olives Links a few miles away. I live about two hours away, but I will likely play this course a couple times per year.
Really enjoyed this Course
There are so many things I liked about this course. As a high handicapper I like the way the course allowed me to get warmed up with some shorter par 4's on the front side and the longer par 4's on the back. We were all very impressed with the fairways and greens- they were in beautiful shape!
Buenaventura... fun shorter course
Played the Blacks (5826/68.3/117) in 4.5H, matched up with Tim, Joey & Emma. We teed off @ 345p on Friday afternoon and finished when it was almost too dark to play. I got a course text special of $19 to ride after 2pm weekdays. The weather was clear, in the 70's and breezy.
I have been playing this course several times a year going back well over a decade, and this may be the best course conditions I have ever experienced here.
The tees were in very good shape overall and almost all the divot damage was already properly maintained.
The fairways were excellent, lush which produced nice lies.
The kikuyu rough is mowed down, which is great for POP, few lost ball areas. However, it is just long enough to grab your club on both full shots or chips. Lusher closer to the fairways/greens, thinner the farther you are from the fairway.
The traps have thick sand and were decently maintained.
The greens putted medium speed, were usually firm and occasionally bumpy. They held approach shots very well.
Courteous and efficient check-in, the customer service was excellent as usual. No GPS on the basic carts but the sprinklers are well marked. Nice snack stand with good burgers and the drinks are good AD. Fun, shorter course that is tougher than the scorecard initially indicates because of trees, tightness and the usual ocean 1-2 club breeze. Easy course to walk, shorter, few hills, no long walks between tee boxes. No range, they only have a couple of cages to warm up in. Nice conditions, and for less than $20 with a cart, hard to beat. Definitely recommended.
I'll definitely be back!
First time playing this course. It was in great condition. Fairways were well maintained. Greens were a little slow. Difficult to read but I loved the challenge. The pace of play was a little slower than I liked but it wasn't the courses fault. It's a short course but challenging. It's one of the best courses in the tri county area.
Tricky greens
Course requires precision off the tee....well bunkered with some incredibly tricky and challenging pin position. Though not overly long this course will severely test your sort game.
Buenaventura
Played the Blacks (5826/68.3/117) in slightly less than 3H as a single. never waiting a shot the entire round on a Teeoff.com special for $17.49. Partly cloudy, around 70 and little breeze today. Easy course to walk, shorter, few hills, no long walks between tee boxes.
The tees were in very good shape overall. Several had been recently resodded and almost all the divot damage was already properly maintained. Also, it looks like they are making a new tee for hole #15 that will be parallel with #14 green and stretch it out a little bit.
The fairways were good overall, lush, nice lies.
The kikuyu rough is not long but is long enough to grab your club on both full shots or chips. Lusher closer to the fairways/greens, thinner the more off the fairway you are.
The traps have thick sand and were decently maintained.
The greens putted okay, occasionally bumpy & medium speed. They held approach shots very well. While the greens today were slightly above average, they were not as good as they usually are here.
Fun, shorter course that is tougher than the scorecard would indicate because of trees, tightness and usually, the wind here. Courteous and efficient check-in, the customer service was excellent as usual with Margaret in the Pro Shop. No range, they only have a couple of cages to warm up in. No GPS on the basic carts but the sprinklers are well marked. Nice snack stand with good burgers and the drinks are good AD. Nice conditions, and for less than $18 with a cart, hard to beat. Definitely recommended.
Fun course
Played 18 in just over 3 1/2 hours however we were not told the greens were recently air rated and we're still a bit sandy. Other wise nice course for the money,
Local public course
Not a course I'd recommend to a visitor but worth the play if you can get a good price. Otherwise Olivas Links is the better choice for Ventura golf.
Short track so play frome the black tees. Lots of short wedges into the greens.
You can't beat the weather!
The course is great. The pace of play was extremely slow. I would recommend a starter at the first hole. And, a marshal would be nice to assist with the pace of play. The pro shop needs more ladies golf clothes. An ice machine near the 10th hole would help with ice for water bottles......just a thought. Overall, the it is a good course. And because we got a HOT DEAL on GolfNow, the rate was good. I don't think I would pay 55 to play here. I love GolfNow!
