Challenging and interesting
Challenging and interesting course with lots of variation. Long but well laid out and in very good condition.
Really enjoyable round
Played here yesterday - first full round of golf in approx 6yrs - played with a colleague from work, had played the course over 12yrs ago, and it has matured so well.
Altho not a long course it is challenging to a golfer who had not played in years. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Holes were great, lovely layout, some cracking par 3's - some very good par 4's. Accuracy is key as water is everyone. The vast amount of wildlife was beautiful to see, herons, geese, swans, ducks, hares, rabbits, deer, squirrels. It was a lovely. I would certainly be back, once I have re-stocked my ball pouch and physically recovered, sore hands n feet lol
Overall if was fantastic to get playing again, and will look to play more frequently now i think maybe once per month - was always a fair weather golfer with work colleagues.
An amazing day and round
Another amazing day on this course. The weather was HOT but the scenery and course was awazing, made all the better for the local spring wildlife and baby goslings everywhere. The only upset was hole 10 was off play due to previous flooding which we weren't informed of at payment or before play. Also, the greens keeper followed us from hole 2-9 religiously and it was a little off-putting.
The course iteself however was fantastic. Well kept greens, fast, and fairways made for an excellent eyeful of scenery. The facilities, range, putting and chipping area, all kept to an excellnt high standard. The food in the club house and staff were excellent too.
Interesting Test
An interesting course, some tough holes though not particularly long. It feels like you are in a maze of water at times, but well signposted to keep you going the right way. There are some massively wide fairways on some holes, but once you get amongst the lakes, wild tee shots can get expensive.
Like most courses it was still recovering from all the rain and the 10th hole was closed altogether, but under the circumstances it was presented very well.
Loads of geese and loads of goose crap
A nice change from the usual parkland fair and I look forward to returning.
Slow
When booking look at bookings and book when quiet. Was playing as a 2 ball, got stuck behind 2-four balls on hole 2-18 which isn’t the courses fault but a slow round creates a bad cloud over everything. Course was also very wet compared to other local courses.probably a good course in good weather and less busy. Glad it was only £12. Not worth much more
Perfect Day
What a lovely course and a real tester. You have to plan your way around or you will get punished. It rewards accuracy and was brilliantly kept with greens rolling true. The bar and driving range have a good vibe about them and are both fairly priced. The food in the clubhouse was delicious too.
The 'Lakes' says it all.
Lots of water to demand you give respect to the course and plan your strategy to avoid big numbers. Beautiful views all the way round and a good variety of scoring opportunities and tester holes such as the down-hill island green par 3 6th and tricky par 4 17th.
Excellent practice facilities at the venue and a friendly vibe inside the clubhouse. Very good value at just 18 quid for a guest as well.
I used to be a member, I remember why I left!
Having been a member here a few years ago I was looking forward to playing but I quickly realised why I left.
A number of the tee boxes have been positioned with the sprinkler head right in the middle which limits your teeing area.
The fairways were good with a decent 2nd cut but then it is wild after that. If your ball goes into that stuff you'll never find it again.
The greens were appalling. The unrepaired pitchmarks made them look like a ariel photo of Berlin circa 1944. After repairing 4-5 on every green I gave up.
The greens have a problem with worm casts as well as they were everywhere.
The wildlife on the course is incredible especially geese and swans however this comes at a cost, faeces and I don't mean just a little. Tonnes of the stuff and it is everywhere. It covers the fairways and greens like you would not believe.
From the minute you arrive you just get the impression the attitude of the management is minimal effort, maximum profit which is a real shame.
Dreadful greens
The course is generally in ok condition. Fairways are a bit patchy but not terrible. The greens, however, are terrible. Somehow manage to be rock hard yet lots of grass on them and really slow. Won't be back anytime soon. Course layout is ok, just very short of the yellows.

Thank you for your review. We are disappointed to read that you didn't enjoy your last visit. We hosted a league match on that day and the opposing players were very complimentary of the course. However, we would love to discuss your concerns in more detail to see what we can do to improve so that your next experience is a better one. If you would like to do that, please contact us via email using info@longhirstgolf.co.uk
Sunday Golf
Played Dawson previously & this time the Lakes course , Arrived club shop friendly welcome , collected score cards & keys to carts : Straight off on 1st Tee , this will be a challenge as it was very windy however the 3 of us really enjoyed our round ; course & greens in good condition in a very picturesque setting!! Clubhouse & a pint of Morretti to round of a good Sundays golf : Will definitely return
Beautiful setting with wildlife and birds.
Lovely course with many lakes to add to the challenge of play. Wildlife and various birds add interest to play and they seem quite accustomed to people passing close to them. A little busier at this time of year than the previous few times I have played this course but pace of place was fairly relaxed and comfortable. All staff very friendly.
Great day
11.58 tee off, some great holes, some long holes, overall grwat place to have a round,
Me amd friend not the best of golfers by a mile, enjoyed our day and made it around the course in little over 3 hours,
Take plenty balls as lots of water hazards, course is a good day out,
Shambles
Turned up for. 1pm t time. Asked to book a buggy and was told there was nine(8 outside) the attitude of the staff was horrible, anyways off we went….. only to be met with 12 people in front of us at 12-50…there was a group of six and a two then a four!!!! Got t off at 1-35 and managed 6 holes in two hours!!! At this point we left the course as it was pointless… emailed the club twice and just ignored!! Don’t waste your money as they don’t give a toss!!!!
As a current member of this club I have to say your last comment regarding management could not be further from the truth. They are charging next to nothing for courses of this level. Show me where else in the northeast you can play against this much water for £18. This strikes me (and anyone else with an ounce of common sense) as a malicious attack motivated by some kind of personal grievance which is utterly shameful.
Hi Neil,
We are sorry that you were disapointed with your recent visit. Just to highlight some of your concerns. Such has been the recent weather, it has been difficult to present the course to the level we would normally expect at this time of year. Given the weather too, it has brought on an onset of casting worms, that we are working on. With regards to the widlife "damage", this is monitored daily as the team are working, and has not been as troublesome as you report. With regards to your final comment, as director of the club, we maintain standards as high as conditions allow us to, and update members very regularly on conditions, playability, maintenance regimes etc, and always aim to provide value for money and high service standards. We are sorry that you felt the need to write such a review.
