Good value golf

Course was Sahara dry with dust bowl fairways but heavily watered greens that were verdant green and ultra slow due to cautious mowing. Bunkering is trad links with mainly very small revetted pots - I avoided all of them! Most tee shots (from yellow) have obvious lines but some in the approach to the Power Station ( not too intrusive!). area are tricky. Some boundary areas were a bit scruffy and littered as Joe/Jane Public and their dogs* clearly create litter & worse*- bit of early day attention here would up the presentation factor. It is a very open aspect layout with potential for a strong wind factor and we were lucky to avoid this. Cheery welcome from the professional with a précis of what’s what to get round and he chatted with interest at the finish too. Friendly staff and tidy clubhouse In these days of high cost low value courses Newbiggin GC deserves to prosper. Like many areas it needs normal rainfall service to resume to help it get the condition back.

Clubhouse experience

My wife and her friends visit newbiggin every Thursday to walk along the prom and have a coffee and lunch, as a long standing member of the golf club I recommended that they try the club house for their lunch, the idea was to bring revenue to the club.

However the experience they had was less than pleasant.

They went to the bar only to be ignored. The woman then disappeared into the kitchen. My wife then rang the bell to get service ony to be greeted by " you will have to wait, I am busy" in a loud unfriendly manner. When they eventually get served it took over 30 mins for their tosted sandwiches to be brought by what thay describe as a miserable unfriendly woman. No one else had been saved during this time so being busy was a poor excuse. They all said that they were made to feel very unwelcome.

Needles to say they have said that they will not return, nor will I recommend the clubhouse again.

Simply wonderful

I played this course in 48mph winds on a Sunday afternoon after another week of torrential rain. It had been closed the previous day and on the day I played almost all the clubs in Northumberland were still closed due to being saturated.

I was created by the club pro in the pro shop, which had everything you might need before playing.

The pro was very friendly, I’d arrived early and he moved my tee time forward so that I wouldn’t be behind a four ball as a solo player, which was ideal.

Owing to the incredibly wet winter we’ve had, fairway protection was in place, no mats required, just lift from the fairway and place in the first cut.

Compared to the parkland course I play at twice a week the ground conditions were unreal. Even in the first cut you could hardly tell you were off the fairway. The ground was dry and firm under foot.

Some of the bunkers were full of water, but again, I have to stress there were only a few courses in the county which were open because of how much rain we’d had.

17 out of 18 greens were open with one (very challenging) temp on the 6th. And all were in fantastic condition

Other than occasional water on a couple of fairways, you’d never tell it had been chucking it down all week.

The course itself was a good challenge of golf, with all the features you’d expect from a links course.

My only criticism, is that on some of the holes it wasn’t obvious where the next tee was and which direction you were playing off the tee (because you’re surrounded by gorse and there is fairway in both directions, there are some blind holes on this course too) this is partly my fault, I’ve never played the ‘dunes course’ layout and the GPS app I use has another layout loaded. But It would be easier for visitors if the course layout was printed on the score cards.

Overall a really good experience throughout, a great course which played well, challenging, and great scenery.

I’ll definitely be back.

Dreadful service

The course itself has struggled with the unprecedented rainfall this winter, however the main issue was when our group returned to the clubhouse for a coffee and some food.

I was 'greeted' by the lady behind the bar with a "do you want anything as you're loitering" to which I replied I would order a bacon sandwich.

I noted that I was the only one in the clubhouse to order food, and I waited approx 20mins before having to ask where my sandwich was.

I was stared at blankly and a non-committal answer prompted me to ask for a refund, when I was then told "we don't do refunds and it's rung through the till now".

I challenged this and was again told they don't do refunds.

I said I'd waited over 20mins and there were no other customers, and said I wanted my sandwich as I was leaving soon. I was asked whether I wanted it wrapped up, to which I said no, I want it at my table.

It arrived with no apology, and a total lack of interest from the staff member.

I won't be back, and I won't be recommending to my friends.

The caterers are apparently new to the club, and they are going to drive customers and visitors away.

If I could give them negative stars I would. Truly shocking.

Budget friendly links brilliance

This was my second time visiting Newbiggin in winter, and it was even better this time around. The winter layout allows for a full round of 18 on good greens, which were quick and true; not as fast as what they are known for, but some tricky pin placements made up for that and maintained the challenge. The course played brilliantly all the way, owing to well looked after fairways and hazards. Given that the late green fee is only £25, this course is a budget friendly gem for proper links golf in winter, and we’re looking forward to seeing it in even more glory in the summer.

Great course considering poor weather we have had

Course was in good constion considering the amount of rainfall we have had. Many other courses closed due to water logged. There was bunkers full of water and some boggy areas but greens where fantastic.

£35 was a bit steep for a winter course that was shortened to a 66 stroke index.

Great welcome by the pro and he moved my 2x2 balls into one 4 ball without me asking .
