Owston - It's a rip off
****DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE UNLESS IT IS SO CHEAP YOU CANT REFUSE*****
They are developing the surrounding area and have chopped the course to what I can only describe as a joke. The front 9 is now only around 2500yds. The back 9 is slightly better but is still ruined.
This was a good course. It's not now.
Shame...
As I’ve played here many times in the past, why oh why they’ve shortened it is beyond me, We enjoyed the long challenging par 5’s .the original first hole was a decent start...now a par 3?split into a following par 4.
Being local it ‘was’ ideal for us to nip for a game, but me thinks we won’t be visiting as much as we use too.
Though it’s not the clubs/owners fault that a nice hotel/spar/golf centre is surrounded be young idiot kids riding motorcycles(parents should be proud) who I know have damaged the course, resulting with a lot of security fencing having to be installed.
And this may be the whole reason to the course redesign,
slow play
Played course before and had a good day, but this time there were a couple of groups who held up play we only managed 10 holes and that took 31/2 hrs, we ended up walking off
For the time of year amazing
I’ve played this course more than a few times over the last few years. And to date this was the best wet winter course conditions I’ve ever played on. Not an inch of squelch the whole way round. Tip of the cap to the greens keepers
New course layout
Wanted to play around to check out the new layout. Personal opinion is that it is improved. Will be much more improved when the 4 temporary greens are replaced.
missed cut !
Unfortunately my wife was rushed to hospital in the morning so couldn't make the round, no refund or cancellation policy unfortunately at short notice but never mind you live and learn.
Disappointed
1st time played since the new layout. For some reason we started on the 9 th hole. They’ve shortened the course by a great deal. No par 5’s and too many par 3’s
I won’t be going back.
Not what it said on the tin
The website states this is an "18 hole championship course par 72", but when we arrived the scorecard was for par 66. Four or five holes had 'greens' which were in the middle of fairways. The course had very few yardage markers and I'd say that a lot of the yardages were incorrect. The holes that did have proper greens were generally good, and the course is set in lovely grounds which could be developed to become a fantastic course, but we left feeling a bit let down by the descriptions on Owston Hall's website
Owston Hall
The course is being altered and upgraded at the moment so there are at least 3 temp. greens but for the price there are no complaints. We will try to go again soon. We had a few heavy showers during the round but mostly sunny. It is well worth a visit for the money but maybe not if paying full price just because of the temp. greens.
Nothing to complain about
Can't understand why there are bad reviews on the internet, yes the course is under reconstruction and yes there are some temporary greens and yes the course layout is somewhat confusing, however, the staff could not have been friendlier, the course when we played it was in fantastic condition (yes even the temporary greens) and for only £20 for 4 players absolutely great value for money! Have played courses charging £30 per player that were not as good as this one.
We will be back to Owston Hall as soon as we can!!
PSF
Had a great time with the 3 lovely guys I was linked up with. The few 'average' comments I made were because the course was undergoing some considerable upgrading but it did not spoil the day.
Owston hall
Very disappointed used to love playing this course before the changes. They have totally ruined the course. don't play here its rubbish.
Disappointed
Played here before and always enjoyed it. Got a good deal on teeofftimes and to be fair was well happy with the price. But was very disappointed that nobody had told us Evan before going out they had knocked 1000 yards off the course. A couple of the long holes had been shortened to make par 3s and these were temperary greens(at least I hope they were) and fencing had been put across the far end of the course and work was still very much in progress. When we asked at the end of the game we were told it was because of vandalism. Will play there in the future to see the changes but feel it's future may not be good.
Course had 5 temps on due to selling some land . We weren't informed when booking and paid too much.
Good course gone bad
Played the course before this time when I played the course had been shortened and the new greens where just mowed parts of the fairway like winter greens, ruined a decent course not been told about changes won't be going again.
Lots of changes, not for the better
The course has been changed a lot over the past few months. It now plays as a par 66, without any par 5s. This would all be fine if it were cheaper and the pace of play were good, it would allow a quick and convenient round that only takes 2:30 hours. However we were kept waiting on every tee for others that couldn't maintain a good pace of play, many of the greens were poor (lacking grass coverage, very small), and for what you get the £14 we paid doesn't seem worthwhile, particularly when we came off after 14 holes due to poor weather (which would have easily been avoided, had the groups in front played at a regular pace). Won't be in a rush to go back, lots to improve on. Was much better a year ago before the changes.
Course under redesign
When the redesign is complete it will be a good round again not well thought out at minute
Easy and short
At £10 You get what you pay for, made it easy and short with no par 5s. Used to be nice with some challenging holes but they've got rid of them now. Shame really
Work to be done on course.
Having played this course often, I have seen first hand the changes occurring, some good some not so good. The course will become much shorter and easier IMO
The greens are still patchy but getting better,18 holes in play now but 4 temp greens remain, whilst new ones are being constructed. If you get a good TOT deal still a fair round of golf for the money.
Agree, it used to be wonderful course with long and testing par 5's and now it's a course for the hotel guests
