El Prado Golf Courses - Butterfield Stage
About
El Prado Golf Course boasts two different 18-hole courses: Butterfield Stage and Chino Creek. Early in California's statehood, stagecoaches would make the 2,700 mile trek from St. Louis to San Francisco. The property used to be a stop on this trail, which is where the Butterfield Stage Course gets its name. It's the shorter of the two courses at 6,568 yards from the back tees. The course is flatter and more forgiving than Chino Creek, but it still has a fair amount of challenges that will test your skills. The layout has generous fairways, but watch out for the strategically placed bunkers lurking along the large, gently undulating greens. Water hazards come into play on several holes as well. The wide open nature of the course can be forgiving but at the same time it will put your round at the mercy of the prevailing winds.

Looks really good in photos, very underwhelming in person
I drove up to here from Orange County because it was the only tee time I could find under $80, and for an 18 hole course it’s definitely has the length of a premium course. The food, beer, and drinks are extremely cheap. You won’t find $2 beers at any other course in America. But that’s where the positive aspects about this course end.
The course was in mediocre shape for early March, as the fairways were uneven and very slow. The greens were uneven at best and provided no help when trying to approach from 100 yards out. I found that the most well kept grass on the entire course was on the tee boxes. The bunkers were also super shallow and had very hard sand in them. There is very minimal paved cart paths, so prepare to have your bones rattled all around the course.
The pace of play was extremely slow for a course with tons of open area, so the blame for this aspect does not fall on the course but on the people playing in front of us.
Overall, I’d rate it 4/10; might be a $40 green fee, but definitely not worth the $56 that I paid
Butterfield course
The fairway could be much better. Greens are good. And bunkers are ok.

El Prado Butterfield
I played Butterfield ranch course and I was somewhat disappointed. I paid a great rate so can't complain about the price. But the condition of the course is pretty bad from the tee to the green. The greens were okay just a little bumpy. The pace of play was pretty good considering one of the guys I was playing with was just learning how to play. Staff were pretty friendly and helpful. Good place to play if you want a cheap rate. On a good note it doesn't smell like cow crap as bad as it use to.

Best Value in that area
Using Golf Now has been a godsend as it allows me to discover new courses. El Prado is near the top of my lists of courses I have discovered and love. Straight forward but challenging. They keep the course in really good shape and the greens are near perfect. I do hope they one day repave some of the cart paths as they are a bit ragged but overall I enjoy playing
Good price if you don't mind condition and just want to play
The course conditions aren't exactly pristine and the Butterfield side smells because of the ponds, ducks and Chino, not their fault but it comes with the territory. The pace of play is an issue as there is a mixed blend of walkers and carts, I found myself catapillared between carts and walkers. If you're looking for a round at a decent price and don't mind course conditions too much this has value.
